Thank you Ryan and Salish! ***Founded in 1990, the Salish Unit Crew was one of the original Indigenous unit crews in the province, and is the only one remaining today made up of all Indigenous crew members. Ryan Pascal was the crew's supervisor from its inception until the age of 65, and still works from the Pemberton Fire Zone located on Lil'wat Nation territory. On National Indigenous Peoples day, Ryan reflected on his time with the crew and hosting their inaugural First Nations Boot Camp this spring. https://lnkd.in/gpNHqy2b

Happy Friday from the Lil'wat Forestry Ventures Crew. We had a great question about our Forest Fuels Management Project the other day: where does the wood go? Answer: some of the wood goes to our forestry yard for our elders' firewood program, and some of it is sold to cover costs of funding shortfalls to make this project happen. Thank you for the questions! And thank you to hard working team who are doing the harvesting and hauling, people like driver Dave! #LilwatNation | #LilwatFireSmart | FireSmart BC | FireSmart™ Canada

Our 'Forest Fuels Management Project' has been a great success so far. Great partners working hard to help deliver this wildfire risk reduction project to better protect our community. We have seven trucks on site and are getting logs from the treatment area out safely. “This work is so important to help keep the community safer from the threat of wildfire, with many other significant benefits,” shared Klay Tindall, Lil'wat Forestry Ventures' General Manager. “The selective thinning of the forest will not only mitigate the risk of wildfires to the local homes and properties but will also enhance residents’ visibility to observe wildlife such as wolves, bears and cougars in the area to better ensure their family’s safety.” Due to the size of the project, we are not eligible for the funding we require to do this work, but this work is important on so many levels, so we are moving forward to get the work done.
