David Milne started Quercus Gardens in Toronto over 25 years ago. 🌿 David Milne left a big landscaping company to start his own business when his son was born. Embracing the stay-at-home dad lifestyle, he still wanted to pursue his passion for landscaping. He focused on efficiency and profitability by serving a smaller geographic area, and distributed flyers in two densely populated and affluent neighborhoods. David's landscaping business was growing more and while he was happy to hire a few more employees, he never wanted his business to grow too big. 💬 “I have this personal philosophy that the more keys in my keychain, the more complicated my life gets.” This is why David Milne decided to manage only 5 employees in 2024, instead of 9 in 2023. David loves mentoring his employees and giving them creative freedom and support without micromanaging them. He is also adamant about paying living wages, being a supportive human and offering a stipend that employees can use for healthcare. 💬 “I can’t offer a profound amount of money, but it’s what my little company can afford to do.” David Milne operates from the heart when interviewing new recruits, and when meeting new clients. 🙌 He loves to ask applicants about their personal interests that may indicate they share a connection, and he makes sure that they have the artistic mentality and passion for the environment needed to work at Quercus. When visiting a new worksite for the first time, he likes to look at the art on his client’s wall and he asks them about the music they’re into to be able to relate to them on a certain level. At the end of the day, Milne is profoundly committed to making a difference in the world. His motivation is not with making money: what matters to him is to do the work he loves, let his staff make a good living, and pay his bills. 💬 “We are blessed to be here. The odds of life on this planet are so infinitesimal that I feel that we have to do everything we can to protect that. I'm part of the generation that helped screw everything up. I want to be a voice for hopefully making things better.” 👉 Read More: https://lnkd.in/g8gxw8vN #Landscaping #LandscapeOntario #LOMembers #LandscapeProfessionals

Last week, Landscape Ontario’s staff embarked on a tour to explore the various aspects of the landscape industry and meet the people who build beautiful outdoor spaces. 🌳 The first stop of the day was Greenworks in Newmarket. We explored their innovative and eco-friendly power equipment, and even got the opportunity to hop on their grass-cutting machines. We continued our journey by visiting Connon Nurseries, where we admired their stunning and high-quality nursery stock. We finally wrapped up the day by visiting BP Landscaping in Brampton. They showed us their facilities and their equipment, including the old fire trucks that they repurposed for their winter maintenance activity. A huge thanks to Derek Rumble-Teetzel from Greenworks Tools, Scott Ferris and Mike from Connon Nurseries , and to Brian Perras and Jamie Perras from BP Landscaping for taking some valuable time in the busy season to share their expertise and touring us around their facilities! 🙌 It was a pleasure to spend the day with landscape professionals and to learn more about different actors of the industry! #LandscapeOntario #LandscapeProfessionals #GreenIndustry
