#DidYouKnow In addition to her #advocacy work supporting women, children, and Black Canadians, the Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine is also a longtime advocate for those with sickle cell disease (SCD) in Canada! In 1997, Dr. Augustine was the first Parliamentarian to call attention to the prevalence of SCD in Canada. She was also responsible for lobbying the federal government to invest in the funding and research of sickle cell so that the healthcare sector could be better equipped to treat those with the disorder. In recognition of her efforts to raise awareness for sickle cell patients in Canada, Dr. Augustine was recently awarded the Legislative Award of Excellence by the Sickle Cell Awareness Group of Ontario (SCAGOSCD) at their annual Hope Gala & Awards. Since 2014, the Jean Augustine Centre for Young Women’s Empowerment has been working tirelessly to honour the #legacy of our founder and namesake and her commitment to social justice by providing girls and young women in the community a safe, welcoming space to learn, grow, and feel empowered. Last Friday marked the end of the program year at the Jean Augustine Centre for Young Women’s Empowerment. 🎉 We were delighted to welcome several of our 2023/24 participants to the Centre to celebrate their accomplishments with certificates, games, and refreshments. Since last September, we have seen participants both new and old gain confidence in leaps and bounds, learn new skills, progress existing skill sets, and approach new experiences with curiosity, empathy, and joy. One of the highlights of this year included the young women in our #YouthVisionaries program assembling cooking-themed gift baskets for graduates of our Spring 2024 session of Chef It Up, demonstrating their leadership skills and keen sense of civic responsibility. On behalf of the Jean Augustine Centre team, we would like to thank you for a wonderful program year. If our programs and services have benefitted you this year, please consider making a donation below. Your support allows us to continue offering the same high quality, accessible after-school programs, workshops, and camps year-round. Donate here: https://lnkd.in/e8Y6Md3Y Thank you! It's official! The Jean Augustine Centre’s brand-new Teen Room is now open! Thanks to the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the incredible design expertise of Melissa Tossell and Jaenelle Murrell of Aurora Design Incorporated, we were able to transform a neglected and worn-down space within the Centre into a modern, inviting escape, exclusively for teens. This space features comfortable and vibrant seating, plenty of workspaces, and brilliant art prints; it also has a SMART television, WiFi, and kitchenette. We were thrilled to unveil the room to our participants, supporters, and community members, especially MPP Christine Hogarth, representing our funding partner the Government of Ontario, who shared encouraging words of support. Thank you again to the Ontario Trillium Foundation and Aurora Design for partnering with us on this project. We would also like to thank the following organizations: Interior Designers of Canada, Sherwin-Williams, Crown Surface Solutions, Benny Bing, Spike Onsite Solutions, Area Construction Inc, RENWIL, Marcantonio Designs, Electrocan Power Services, Style In Form, and NICHE DECOR. Their contributions were pivotal to helping us upgrade this room from top to bottom. Thank you! Yesterday marked ten years since the Jean Augustine Centre for Young Women's Empowerment first opened its doors. 🎉 The Centre was established with a clear vision: to create a space where young women could find support and realize their potential. Ten years later, we are proud to say that we have touched the lives of thousands of girls and young women, providing them with the tools, experiences, and community they need to succeed. To all those who have supported the Centre in any capacity over the last ten years, thank you for your unwavering support. This milestone would not have been possible without the tremendous support of each of you. 💜 Here’s to many more years working together for the success of girls and young women at the Jean Augustine Centre for Young Women's Empowerment! #jeanaugustinecentre #youngwomensempowerment #10thanniversary #milestone #etobicoke #nonprofit #thankyou

On May 30, our Fundraising Coordinator, Bryony Vander Wilp, had the pleasure of attending a Pallett Valo LLP Women’s Network event to share more about the Jean Augustine Centre and our mission. Pallett Valo is a Mississauga-based law firm specializing in business law, commercial litigation, construction, workforce risk management, and more. We extend our warm thanks to Melissa Cunsolo for inviting us to their office and providing an opportunity to highlight our Craft for a Cause and Look Up! Lift Up! programs. We would also like to thank the whole team at Pallett Valo for generously donating to the Centre. Donations like theirs support our mission of providing accessible, high-quality mentorship, civic engagement, and empowerment opportunities to girls and young women in Etobicoke and the GTA. #jeanaugustinecentre #youngwomensempowerment #pallettvalo #givingback #communitysupport #corporatedonors #thankyou

The Jean Augustine Centre gratefully acknowledges the Ontario Trillium Foundation for awarding us with a $20,900 #CapitalGrant that will help us revitalize a room in our centre into a vibrant space for our youth. The Ontario Trillium Foundation’s grant will help us transform this underutilized room into a multi-purpose hub through the installation of comfortable seating, desk space, and wifi. With this grant, we will be able to provide young women in the community with an accessible, drop-in space to complete homework, spend quality time with friends, and enjoy personalized youth programming that supports their wellbeing. We are incredibly grateful for the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s support of JAC. Thank you for your confidence in our work and for making a difference in the lives of the girls and young women we serve. Thank you, Ontario Trillium Foundation! #ontariotrilliumfoundation #grantacknowledgement #thankyou
