New research finds that volatile fossil fuel prices not only impact #energy costs—they are also a key driver of #inflation in Canada. Increasing energy prices contributed to 33% of Canada’s overall inflation between Feb 2021 & June 2022 and these increases have a ripple effect fueling inflation in other sections including food & housing. So how can Canada mitigate future energy-driven inflation—there are three key strategies: Reduce reliance on fossil fuels Improve energy efficiency Increase renewables Renewable energy is now the lowest cost form of energy production in most of the world. The report finds that wind and solar energy can help lower costs for consumers and stabilize energy prices. 95% of new utility scale solar & onshore wind had lower generation than new coal & natural gas in 2023. IISD’s Jessica Kelly explains, “Recognizing energy's crucial role in price stability, governments can and should champion policies to discourage fossil fuel use. This includes maintaining current actions such as carbon pricing, fuel taxation, and fossil fuel subsidy reform. But these efforts must be balanced with policies that drive energy efficiency, fuel switching, and renewable energy measures.” Read the full report: https://bit.ly/4cGmvDk #ReEnergizingCanada #Fossilflation

"There is no question that water demands a holistic approach—one that promotes policy coherence and global cooperation." Speaking at a #HPLF2024 event on the #WaterActionAgenda and #SDG6, IISD President and CEO Patricia Fuller expressed support for the United Nations' newly launched strategy for water and sanitation, which promotes joint programming and collaboration across sectors and geographies. IISD knows the importance of partnerships when it comes to freshwater protection, whether it's peer-learning exchanges and mentorship with African women scientists at African Center for Aquatic Research and Education, our work with Indigenous communities in Treaty 3 territory at IISD-Experimental Lakes Area, or through Earth Negotiations Bulletin coverage of multilateral cooperation on environmental issues. We look forward to collaborating as a United Nations Water Partner in the years ahead, working toward these common goals and the #WaterActionAgenda. 📸: IISD/ENB Kiara Worth

In Johannesburg, South Africa, invasive alien species along Jukskei River threaten the city's water security, increasing flood risk and affecting local biodiversity. Communities also grapple with rising temperatures. In partnership with the City of Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Parks, GenderCC Southern Africa - Women for Climate Justice, Water for the Future Jukskei River Rehabilitation, Alexandra Water Warriors Npc, Johannesburg Inner City Partnership and Zutari, we will deploy targeted NbS for riverbank rehabilitation and the removal of invasive species clogging waterways. #SUNCASA will also expand resilient green spaces in the city by planting indigenous trees and supporting horticulture. Over 1M people along Jukskei River will benefit from the NbS actions. In total, 5,47 million residents will have their resilience to #ClimateChange increased. On top of that, 2,000 community members will have the opportunity to join capacity-building and peer learning programs, as well as #NbS implementation activities. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gNe4k36Z

Join Nature-Based Infrastructure Global Resource Centre this autumn for the NBI Academy 5-Week Live Program. The popular training course on Nature-Based Infrastructure is back and will run from 25 September to 23 October 2024. The course aims to empower investors, policymakers, infrastructure planners, and other stakeholders to analyze the economic performance and co-benefits of NBI compared with traditional or “grey” infrastructure, to demonstrate the investment case of building with nature. Combining online materials, global case studies and interactive Zoom sessions, the course allows you to ask experts questions, exchange experiences with other participants around the world, and dive deeper into the course topics through real-time exercises. Each week participants will convene for a 2-hour session, focusing on one of five course modules: 1️⃣ Nature-Based Infrastructure and Climate Adaptation 2️⃣ Systems thinking for Infrastructure Decision Making 3️⃣ Integrated Cost-Benefit Analyses Using Excel-based Models 4️⃣ Climate Data and Spatial Analysis for NBI 5️⃣ Financing Analysis and Solutions for NBI To secure your place, register here: https://lnkd.in/e-yYW-Tn The training is free of cost, and you will receive a course certificate once the program is complete. 📃 The 2022 #FisheriesSubsidies agreement marked a significant achievement, but the issue of subsidized overfishing extends beyond its targeted subsidy prohibitions. Despite not concluding negotiations at the WTO's 13th Ministerial Conference, members reached an unprecedented level of convergence on new, stronger disciplines. 🔄 The Chair of negotiations, Ambassador Gunnarsson of Iceland, has now tabled a slightly revised text, suggesting a possible landing zone that WTO members could agree on at the upcoming WTO General Council meeting in July. These proposed rules are not perfect, but they reflect years of painstaking work to find compromises between members' positions and hold substantial value for sustainable development. 🎯 The new text would prohibit the most risky types of fisheries subsidies unless credible measures are in place to keep fish stocks healthy, with stricter requirements for big players and subsidies targeted at distant water fishing. Developing members would benefit from a series of transitional and permanent exemptions, including for artisanal activities and smaller fishing nations. Strengthening the 2022 agreement with broader rules to curb harmful fisheries subsidies would be a major step forward. 👉 Read IISD's take on why these rules are so important in our latest analysis here: https://lnkd.in/deShQc4e
