Last week a number of my colleagues joined me in Detroit for the Intelligent Cities USA Summit. Our team (Hannah Louie, Ashley Pollard, & Andrew Buss) was asked to present a Philadelphia Spotlight during the event, in which we shared the evolution of our Innovation Ecosystem work as a municipality since it began in 2014. I was also asked to speak on a panel about "Reimagining Downtowns", something I certainly have some opinions on 😇 , and partnered with Cities Reimagined to host a Jane's Walk (part people mover ride ⛈ ). It was an invigorating few days, showing off my hometown and talking shop with people from all over the US and Canada that genuinely care about cities and how they function. Enjoying my role as lead communicator for the City of Farmington Hills supported by a dynamic team of marketing, PR and AV experts. The role has expanded opportunity to meet amazing professionals inside and outside my industry, such as the trade commissioner of Canada Ralia Elgarawany during the Intelligent Cities event today in Detroit. Valuable time was also spent in conversation with experts from Australia, London, Quebec, and Atlanta, GA. After the event I seized the opportunity to extend some famous Detroit hospitality with a mini tour of significant locales in and around the city including one of my favorite City of Dearborn bakeries, Gateaux Patisserie!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Intelligent Cities Summit on the Digital Transformation panel with Rebecca Irby of New Detroit, Inc. and Lois Rouder of Amazon Business. Eman El-Fayomi of the Canadian Digital Service (CDS) / Service numérique canadien (SNC) was an excellent moderator, and facilitated an engaging and inspirational conversation. Three themes we discussed with respect to digital transformation: 1. Ask who is NOT at the table. This is imperative in implementing technology initiatives inclusively and sustainably, from the start and not in retrospect. 2. Tech is great, but if a city doesn’t have people in it, tech is meaningless. Design tech for people. Tech—everything from a pencil to an iPad, a smart street lamp to an algorithm—is a tool to be used in meeting citizens’ needs and serving communities. Tech isn’t a panacea, but people using tech creatively and with purpose to solve problems can change our world. 3. Education is critical. Don’t assume people know what they need to do to start a business, obtain certifications, or work with governments and navigate city procurement. Partnering with community organizations such as coworking spaces, schools, libraries, churches and religious institutions, and startup development orgs to host events such as info sessions, informal conversations, or office hours is paramount to building awareness, buy-in, and trust. Thank you in particular to Siún Ní Mhuimhneacháin for all her help in executing this wonderful conference in the City of Detroit. Detroit is a fascinating city with a very interesting history, beautiful art and art deco architecture, and wonderful people and communities. #smartcities #intelligentcities #digitaltransformation #responsibletech #techandsociety

🚀 Panel on Citizen-Centric Service at Intelligent Cities in Detroit 🌆 Kyle Othmer, Director of Strategic Accounts at Miovision, recently played a role on an insightful panel titled "Citizen-Centric Service at Intelligent Cities" in the City of Detroit. It wouldn't have been possible to host Intelligent Cities Summit 2024 without the generous support of our partners, who are leading innovation in the municipal space. Thank you as well to the City of Detroit for hosting and partnering with us to give space to share innovation and leadership in building future cities.
