What’s the most important features on a power wheelchair? We would say the suspension system and electronics; and here’s why. We recently supplied a Sunrise Medical Q700M with Canada’s first ProGrip suspension system. In our opinion (And many others) this chair has the best suspension system in our industry. This allows our clients to confidently go where they want to go. https://lnkd.in/ge5pXf5R For electronics, it really determines what’s possible on the chair and how clients can interact with their world, either digitally or environmentally. There’s a lot going on with this chair and it’s alternative drive and environmental controls, please scroll through the pictures to see the details in each of the areas. There is an Omni display for her to see as she scrolls through driving, seating positioning, and her phone, laptop, and environmental controls. The mini joystick is a chin control that she sometimes uses as a mouth piece and the sip n puff allows her to scroll through her options. There’s an attendant control for her family to be able to move the chair as well, mostly when she is out of it. Finally the headrest system and customized seating system is there to help conserve energy through supporting the head and body properly. This amazing client has such an endearing spirit. We have known her since she was very young and this is her first power wheelchair. The room literally erupted in cheer when she drove her chair for the first time as we know this was a huge step towards improving what she can do independently. She lives in a very rural area of Alberta and we were honoured that her and her family chose to come down to Calgary to work with Home Medical Solutions. How much can trauma affect our lives? Affect our ability to have have a typical life? We worked with a wonderful client of ours and the wheelchair and seating options really allowed us to chose features that help him with his functional tremors. This is another beautiful chair from the outstanding Canadian company, Motion Composites. This award winning Helio C2 is a game-changer in our industry as it has a specially designed cross brace frame that allows the chair to have less flex and be more efficient than other folding chairs. The spinergy wheels were chosen to have light weight yet extremely strong wheels. The optimal handrims is a new option from Motion Composites and you can see that thumb groove helps grip the handrim more effectively. The gel arm pads are a fantastic upgrade to clients that are sensitive to pressure or to protect skin integrity. The cushion is what the client is used to and the backrest is helping him not fight his positioning as much and conserves energy throughout the day with better posture. The best part of his seating is the BodyPoint padded seatbelt. We have set it up he is able move better independently as the seatbelt gives him the ability to feel secure in his movement and this support allows him to propel the chair much more effectively. Trauma is no joke! This client endured so much trauma that now it presents as tremors and looks more like Parkinson’s, but it’s not, it’s PTSD. This chair and seating is to help him maximize his independence while he works on his therapies. How important is being the same height as your peers? Home important is colour? This is a Q6 Edge chair from Pride Mobility for one of our favourite clients. We have know her for since she was very young.... and now she’s in high school and she totally loves theatre. When we were trialing the chair, she immediately dialed in on the seat elevation option as she raised up to the same height as her twin. Luckily enough, the parents were able to put this seating option through their insurance as unfortunately most funding agencies don’t approve this. There’s physical benefits to this option with being able to increase a range of interacting with the environment, and access and such, but the emotional and mental side overall to this option is way more impactful than I think we realize. And what about colour?? This chair is an extension of her. Her style flows through this chair as she’s generally done up in a Harijuku look. It's amazing to see her use this chair and what she's planning on doing. Colour is more important than we realize!! Do the little things matter? We would say, sometimes they mean everything!! Here's another bathroom recently completed and we wanted to highlight some great features the client and the spouse wanted to include. The flush mounted linear drain sloping away from the main area really helps mange the water of the area. As well, tile backing is added in many places to mange water. The off-set faucet is a wonderful addition to help turn on the shower and get it going without getting wet. There are also temperature control faucets and other specialty faucets that are really benefitting our community. Besides that, the family and everyone at HMS are really proud of the work that was done here. Let's talk complex Sleep Surface Solutions!! There are many reason why Permobil has a premiere line of Sleep Surfaces with the many features they have in their products. We should all be aware of Alternating Pressure Therapy, but how many of us know about Pulsating Therapy. The Pulsation mode increases and decreases the surface’s air volume every 15 seconds. We have a client that is challenged with his tremors that are a result of a Functional Neurologic Disorder superimposed on his known Spinal Cerebellar Atrophy. His tremors are exacerbated by stress, lack of sleep, and perception of lack of control. He has found sensory modulation (pressing his legs, forehead) helpful as well as big movements (big arm extension and then flexion) incorporated with deep breathing. He is also hypersensitive to anything that makes contact to his body and rejects most solutions. Well, when we trialed the client with the Serene Air Sleep Surface he instantly connected to and found true comfort with the pulsating feature. As a result with such a successful outcome we are working with Permobil's Clinical Educator in Canada, Brenlee Mogul-Rotman, to start a case study.
