By day, Dr. Rageen Rajendram is a developmental pediatrician who treats children with neurodevelopmental differences. By night he’s a hip hop artist, using his music to connect with the children and youth he treats. In March, he rapped to raise funds for the hospital’s annual Capes for Kids fundraiser by donating all the proceeds of his song ‘I Am’. Social determinants of health can have a profound impact on health-care access, quality, safety and outcomes. At Holland Bloorview, our goal is to ensure that all children, youth and their families have access to the highest quality of care that we can provide. We ask because We Care aims to gather the information we need to better understand the communities we serve, challenge existing health inequities and deliver equity-oriented care to ensure the best health outcomes for clients and families. “Actually using the Family Support Fund helps me understand the needs and the numbers we’re seeing, and help get approval for things like rental equipment,” says Cheryl, a mentor on the Family Leadership team at Holland Bloorview. We know that factors like income can affect how individuals access care, impacting their long-term health outcomes. And when disability is also present, that impact is disproportionate. Thanks to our generous community, this 100 per cent donor-supported program provides hundreds of families with up to $1,500 in financial assistance per year. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dx_4f36r

On the one-year anniversary of a historic provincial investment in children’s health and wellbeing we’re thrilled to celebrate the tremendous momentum, and impact, it’s fueling across the pediatric health care system. At Holland Bloorview we’re seeing: ☑️ a 10 per cent increase in staffing across clinical and administrative areas of the hospital ☑️ increased inpatient capacity with the addition of four new inpatient rehabilitation beds ☑️ an ability to serve 60 per cent more clients in our day patient unit ☑️ an additional 800 children and youth who were able to see highly-skilled developmental health care experts for a range of outpatient services Learn more about how we’re right-sizing the pediatric health care system together to ensure Ontario’s nearly three million children and youth have access to the medical, developmental and mental health care they need, and deserve, to succeed and thrive. Teya Oliver is an undergraduate student at the University of Toronto. This summer, she was one of 17 budding researchers in the Ward Summer Student Research Program. “My work this summer in the Ward Program has further solidified my research interests in comprehending and dissecting the impact of co-occurring marginalized identities among youth, specifically the intersection of disability and gender identity," says Teya. The highlight of the program is the opportunity for these talented students to highlight their research at the 18th annual Anne & David Ward Family Summer Student Research Day, happening next Tuesday at 9 am.
