“Studios budget to develop their games, not to sell them.” This insightful comment from my industry friend and experienced biz dev professional, Michael Futter, during our call yesterday made me question a lot of things. I asked Michael why so many studios expressed high interest in the game market analysis we developed at GameRebellion, but hesitated to integrate it into their initial development process. While we are aware of the funding applications and issues, I’m specifically referring to those who have already secured funding for development. Many consider marketing to be a secondary funding step, but market research should be part of the early development finances. Michael provided invaluable insights into why game studios often overlook market research in their early development stages, explaining that it was all a matter of budgeting priorities. Developers focus on creating their games, believing that selling will naturally follow, despite the fact that understanding the market early on significantly boosts their chances of achieving their sales goals. As game marketers, we understand the critical impact of early market knowledge. We can clearly see the difference in the success of studios that prioritize market analysis from the start versus those that do not. However, I’m curious about the studios’ perspective. What drives their decision to forgo early market analysis despite its proven benefits? ➡ I’d love to hear from game developers about their experiences and thought processes. What challenges or considerations influence this choice? #gamemarketing #indiegames #gamedev #gamingcommunity
