Ian Rolston and I got to know each other while working at HOK. We both had a brief stop at Metrolinx where we both pondered how we can leverage our knowledge to do better (design) . He now leads Decanthropy. I listened into his presentation and I am happy that he has not lost sight or hope in creating (or rather designing) a "better world". His view of inclusive design has no boundaries (or exclusions). As I posed the question about legislation or regulation addressing the shortfalls in our design process, he rightfully pointed out that we, the #AEC and Design Industry, need to lead the charge, The MVP (Minimally Viable Product) solutions that "meets" code are not sufficient. From the client side, we also need to do more than lip service on #DEIB initiatives and fund some of the "nice to have" inclusive features that make all spaces accessible. Keep challenging us Ian! Perhaps one path to achieving this is for our design industry to embark on a Hippocratic Oath (similar to the medical profession) and a "First do not harm" approach to design.
