Stories behind the history
About us
History is happening right now at Canada's History, where our mission is to make the discovery of our nation's past relevant, engaging, empowering and accessible to all Canadians. Canada's History is one of only two national charities devoted to the field of public history and the only one with a broad national membership base. Our loyal members include some 50,000 Canadian adults, children and youth from Toronto to Cambridge Bay, Nunavut; from Montreal to Balcarres, Saskatchewan; and from Vancouver to Centreville, Nova Scotia. Our popular publications, Canada's History Magazine (formerly The Beaver) and Kayak: Canada's History Magazine for Kids, bring the people and events that have shaped our past to life in stories that educate us as well as entertain. Our national awards and recognition programs celebrate the exemplary efforts of others working to preserve, promote and popularize Canadian history. We are leaders in weaving connections within Canada's diverse history community, supporting local projects and helping teachers, community volunteers and the general public tap the rich vein of Canadian history resources country-wide.

Know of a community project that goes above and beyond to keep Canadian history alive? Well, there has never been a more important time to get it recognized. The Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Community Programming aims to inspire small or volunteer-led community organizations in the creation of innovative programming that commemorates unique aspects of our heritage and encourages greater public interest in the past. Two recipients (one from a francophone community and one from an anglophone community) will receive $2,500 each, and travel and accommodation for two project representatives from a major city to attend the awards ceremony. Apply before July 15! https://lnkd.in/eb9gUQsZ

From the 1900s to the 1950s being a sleeping car porter was one of the few decent jobs a black man could get in Canada. However, being Black meant they were barred from joining any existing railway workers unions. Watch: https://lnkd.in/gyU7NwTx #BlackHistoryMonth
