Yup it’s expensive. Kept telling myself I should return because of the price but can’t seem to part with the monitor. Its just 🤌🏽. It’s a very sharp display, beneficial for my line of work as a software engineer.I’m justifying the purchase as a gift for my eyes. My astigmatism kicks in when my eyes get fatigued and my day is pretty much done when that happens. The brightness and crisp display definitely helps for long hours of coding & reading documentations.I love the speakers & design. As you can see in the photo, it’s aesthetically pleasing. I like my stuff to look good, to match my face 😉 jk.I did take a huge gamble and ordered a used one, a risky “acceptable” condition from Amazon Warehouse, because I read through Reddit that there’s a high chance the item would be in perfect condition and just be in a busted up box.And wouldn’t you know it.. the unit I got was flawless. No scratches, dents, or defects of any sort. Only con was that it didn’t come with the original (expensive) thunderbolt 4 cable, Amazon provided a generic one. Works perfectly fine though so whatevs. I pretty much got the tilt & height adjustable version for $500 less. So I’m happy 😊I’m not saying you should buy a used unit with “acceptable” condition too.. don’t be a degenerate like me.. 😉

The Apple Studio Display checked off a lot of boxes for me, so I bought it. Apparently, the main complaint most people have with this monitor is that it is too expensive. Well, it’s not cheap, but there’s really not much else out there right now in the fully Mac-compatible world to compete with it, so yes, it is a premium price for an elite machine. Here are the monitor requirements that were important to me:

-I wanted a high quality 5K monitor with a beautiful screen. Done, no complaints here. It’s produces beautiful, sharp and bright images and text.
-I wanted a fully Mac-compatible monitor. Done. The Studio Display reacts quickly and exactly like the screen on an iMac would; integrated as though it was built into the computer. Screen brightness and volume control are handled by the computer’s keyboard. The Studio Display has no buttons whatsoever. No problem with text font scaling.
-I did NOT want a monitor that was on back-order; it needed to be available immediately. Amazon delivered the Studio Display within a couple of days as promised (and for $100 less than Apple’s pricing).
-I wanted built-in speakers. The Studio Display’s speakers are excellent.
-I wanted a built-in microphone. Check. The mic is very good.
-I wanted a built-in camera. Check, even though the images are fairly soft.
-The monitor had to look good on my desk. The Studio Display is designed and crafted beautifully with high-end materials.

My computer is an M2 Pro, Mac Mini.

Display is amazingly pretty, high resolution with speakers and camera. I also discovered it charges my mac book so now I only have one cable when "docked". Worth the money, especially as I use it for work.

The Studio Display is a superb monitor. Great picture quality, great sound. It also has a versatile built-in camera that can focus on one person but can also represent a group of people.

I love Apple products. Nobody builds things like they do, with the same attention to design and details. This is an excellent monitor, and a huge upgrade over my last screen, although there are substantial drawbacks and compromises present in this very expensive product.

On the positive side, the image is incredibly sharp, and perfectly scaled for displaying content in MacOS. You will not see pixels at normal viewing distances with normal eyesight. The screen is very bright, and I don't think most will use it at full brightness. It is quite large, and a great size for multitasking in my opinion. The sound quality is exceptional, if you have use for the built-in speakers. The controls are all managed via software, and everything "just works" when attached to a Mac.

The monitor is certainly quite costly, but whether it is overpriced is a question of your needs, available competition (there really isn't anything to match it in terms of overall resolution, build quality, and features), and priority for the Apple aesthetic. In any case, it is frustrating at this price point to see so many design compromises and premium features lacking. There is no local backlight dimming, and the blacks are never exceptionally deep. It's impossible to get really great contrast or high dynamic range with this old lcd technology, although the colors are quite true, and the image is very pleasing in general. The refresh rate is fixed at 60Hz, which is too low to avoid motion blurring. The cabling is simple and the USB-C data / power pass-through works great, but why is the power cord permanently attached (ridiculous!!)? It is quite convenient to have a built-in webcam and mic, but the image quality of the camera is very poor for a product in this price class. I had thought that objections to the camera in early reviews were just fanboy noise from people trying to make news. Nope, it is really very bad. I originally considered the image to be OK, albeit somewhat soft, until I compared it head-to-head with a streamed image from my iPhone's back camera. The difference in resolution and quality is not subtle - it is extreme. I marvel that they put this 2nd rate camera in such an expensive product. What a wild decision. It may be part of the focus on an ultra-wide field view that automatically reframes the subject. This is fun, but I would much rather just have great image quality if I could only pick one. The design priorities seem strange in other ways too -- the computing chip inside this monitor is actually very powerful, and adds to the overall cost. Naively, it seems quite over-engineered in that regard, but perhaps there are good reasons for it that escape me. Still, I would have preferred attention to be focused on something more obviously useful, like built-in Face ID.

Ultimately, I suspect that a lot of users will feel "trapped" by this product. The current computer lineup at Apple with no large iMac will funnel a lot of users reluctantly into a purchase that is simultaneously their best available choice, but still not one they can really feel great about. I do actually like the notion of separates, but the minimal combined cost of a new system is way up. I guess you can't complain too much if you decide the purchase is "worth it" to you. But, the lingering sense of having paid premium prices for a significantly compromised product is not consistent with the type of optimal experience that has led happy Apple customers to zealously evangelize for the brand over the years.
