The Silent Threat in Telecoms: When Low Prices Mask High Stakes In the telecommunications arena, a seemingly beneficial trend of low-priced entry points by the Alnets is setting a massive trap for the unwary consumer. This low pricing strategy, designed to rapidly build a customer base, hides a stark reality that few are willing to discuss. These alnets, once they have sufficiently scaled, become ripe targets for acquisition by the industry's behemoths. Post-acquisition, the result is a dramatic reduction in market diversity and an alarming potential for price increases—imagine paying up to 75% more for the same service overnight. Here’s the part that truly concerns me: There’s a widespread silence on this impending issue. While consumers enjoy short-term savings, they are unwittingly walking into a long-term price gouging scenario with little to no recourse. Current regulations and consumer protections appear insufficient to curb such market consolidation that could lead to monopolistic behaviors. Moreover, the typical consumer is already burdened by annual CPI increases imposed by ISPs. Promises of 'no mid-contract price hikes' from alnets become meaningless once these companies dissolve into the portfolios of larger corporations, leaving consumers without a safety net. As an industry, we must confront these critical issues head-on: Is short-term consumer savings worth the long-term cost of reduced market competition and increased prices? What proactive steps can regulators take to preserve market diversity and protect consumer interests? The time for a serious conversation on this is now. Ignoring these warning signs puts us on a path to a less competitive market and a disservice to consumers. Telecom vendor selection isn't the same as other procurement. So if your vendor selection process tries to: - Only factor in price, - Rely on outdated information, - Overlook location-specific coverage... ...expect it to create sub-optimal connectivity at best, business disruption at worst. This one-size-fits-all approach might work in centralized procurement but in telecom - it falls short. Which is why I'm equal parts surprised & not surprised it's so common. Surprised because it's clearly the wrong approach. But also not surprised because it's easy to see how we got here... Telecom used to be very centralized. And, at that time, this made perfect sense. The carriers were limited. The options were standardized. Most services didn't leave the bounds of the office. These stakeholders needed to be able to control costs. The process supported that. It was only when remote work did end-users start having sway over connectivity decisions. In response, telecom procurement corrected course. But it over-corrected. And now the correction needs correcting. I'm not saying throw out procurement best practices. But I am saying that it should enable productivity as quickly & efficiently as possible. Eliminate the guesswork. Keep the oversight.

Another excellent piece by Iain Morris at Light Reading, this time a recap of TM Forum’s Digital Transformation World Series along with a candid review of the industry’s challenges. The article quotes several important figures from the operator side, giving candid views on the financial challenges and innovation woes threatening the sector's stability. “The reality is that our return on investment, our growth, is not good enough, and we can't be happy with where we are as an industry at the moment," said Kim Andersen, the chief technology officer of Australia's Telstra, in a DTW call to arms. "We need to reinvent this industry and save this industry." An unusually candid view from the CTO of a major telco. Genuine product innovation is occurring all around the telcos and is difficult to watch. For me, real change will only be possible with a total upheaval of the industry’s culture. Which, unfortunately, is the hardest part to change. Therefore, the much-needed innovation is probably going to have to come from an outside disrupter. Lycamobile urge regulators to block T-Mobile's purchase of the MVNOs Mint Mobile, Ultra Mobile and the MVNA Plum #Lycamobile, a UK-based mobile virtual network operator (#MVNO), who entered the US market through a US subsidiary, and a MVNO wholesale agreement deal with T-Mobile in 2012, has taken its fight against T-Mobile public. In a fiery filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Department of Justice, Lycamobile accused T-Mobile of a variety of anti-competitive practices, including withholding key technologies from Lyca's US subsidiary which as around 542,000 subscribers. In the filing, Lycamobile urged federal regulators to block T-Mobile’s prospective acquisitions of the two MVNOs Mint Mobile, Ultra Mobile and the mobile virtual network aggregator (#MVNA) Plum "T-Mobile already provides more favorable terms to Lyca's competitors, and this situation will predictably deteriorate for independent MVNOs if T-Mobile is permitted to acquire ... Mint," Lycamobile wrote. In its filing to the FCC, T-Mobile argued that Lyca's complaints were filed nine months too late – after the FCC's comment deadline – and that they are not relevant. Lycamobile "improperly seeks to interject an irrelevant private contractual dispute ... into the commission’s public interest review," according to T-Mobile. T-Mobile officials had hoped to close the company's proposed $1.35 billion acquisition of Plum, Ultra and Mint Mobile's estimated 3 million customers in the first quarter of 2024 – but that didn't happen. That's the second delay to the deal as the FCC continues to evaluate the proposed acquisition. Excellent post by Javier Domínguez Lacasa about spectrum policy for midband Midband is the lifeline for Telcos to provide high-speed and reliable data services. There is no other spectrum band that offers the reach, bandwidth, and properties like midband. Unfortunately, this is a scarce resource and extremely expensive. As a scarce resource, regulators need to prioritize the benefits of the majority of users who connect daily to these services. Consider this: effective spectrum allocation can enhance network capacity by up to 50%, which directly improves service quality and user satisfaction. With 5G technology expected to cover one-third of the world’s population by 2025, the efficient use of midband spectrum becomes even more crucial. This band is essential for enabling advancements in IoT, smart cities, and autonomous vehicles, and its optimal use could significantly boost these developments. Moreover, the economic implications are substantial. A 10% increase in mobile broadband penetration can lead to a 1.5% rise in GDP in developing economies. Private Mobile Networks June 2024 Summary ˚✧ GSA analysis of the private mobile networks market in 1Q24 reveals continued traction for these networks. The total number of GSA customer references deploying private mobile networks to 1Q24 is 1,427, switching on at least one network. Net additions in the quarter were 43 customer references, up from 1,384 in 4Q23. ˚✧ There are now 78 countries around the world with at least one private mobile network, with Papua New Guinea adding its first networks. ˚✧ In terms of industries, public venues and other neutral hosts saw the highest growth of the top 15 sectors from 4Q23, up 16%. Hospitals also grew by more than 10%. ˚✧ Of the top 10 reporting countries, Belgium and the Netherlands reported growth of over 10% from 4Q23, up 14% and 11% respectively. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ˚✧ The Page 7 chart shows the percentage distribution of private mobile network technology used across various industries, with a focus on #LTE, #5G, and other technologies. The sectors where 5G is particularly favored (shown in red) can be identified by the proportion of the red bar in comparison to the blue (LTE) and gray (Other) bars.
