Man dies in boat collision in Shell Bank Creek

GERRITSEN BEACH — ONE MAN DIED in a boat collision on Saturday morning in Shell Bank Creek, near the end of Avenue X, reports Gothamist. A small boat carrying three people collided with an 18-foot boat carrying one man, sending all four into the water. An FDNY boat was nearby and quickly came to the aid of the victims, but a 58-year-old man from the smaller vessel, identified as Radik Galeev, was pronounced dead at Coney Island Hospital; the other passengers are in stable condition.

Police say no “criminality” is suspected in the incident, but are investigating the causes. Galeev’s widow, Tatsiyana Rymasheuskaya, from the smaller boat, told the Daily News that she attempted to save her husband after regaining consciousness following the crash, but that he was already unresponsive.

Mass at Barclays Center marks golden jubilee of the Neocatechumenal Way for U.S. Catholics

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — BARCLAYS CENTER BECAME A HUB FOR MORE THAN 20,000 CATHOLICS gathering the weekend of July 7-8 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the in the U.S., according to The Tablet diocesan newspaper and other sources. The faith-based gathering at the borough’s famous sports arena celebrated the Spanish-born Catholic spiritual renewal movement’s arrival in the States. A catechumen is traditionally a course of instruction for people converting to Catholicism; however, this renewal movement includes Catholics who are also on the road to ordination or special ministries, including religious orders.  Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the papal nuncio to the U.S., concelebrated Mass with Brooklyn Diocesan Bishop Robert Brennan and several other bishops and priests. Two lay people, Mr. Francisco José Gómez Argüello, a Spanish painter, and  Ms. Carmen Hernández, a theology graduate, founded the movement, which Pope Saint John Paul II formally recognized in 1990, calling it “an itinerary of Catholic formation, valid for our society and for our times.” During the liturgy, about a thousand young men entering the seminary stood up to receive a blessing from Cardinal Christophe. Around 1,500 young women discerning religious life or missionary vocations also stood to receive a blessing.

The Diocese of Brooklyn (which includes Queens) has several Neocatechumenal Way communities, including 1,100 across the United States.

Family suing city for $100 million over alleged antisemitic attack at son’s school

GRAVESEND — A JEWISH FAMILY plans to sue the city for $100 million over a brawl at their children’s P.S. 682 fifth-grade graduation celebration that plaintiffs Johan Nunez and Lana Lerner say was motivated by antisemitism, reports the New York Post. The dispute began during the ceremony on June 14, when a student walked across the stage with a Palestinian flag and a cap decorated with the message “Free Palestine,” causing Lerner’s mother to walk out of the auditorium. Lerner says the boy’s family then pushed her mother at a reception following the ceremony, leading to an exchange of words between the two groups before members of the other family allegedly began to punch and kick Nunez and Lerner while yelling about Palestine. Part of the fight was captured on video, in which Nunez is seen being held down by several other people as onlookers scream.

While one man from the other student’s party was arrested after the incident, other witnesses said that both families refused to stop the fight. The plaintiffs say that the school failed to provide proper security and that the school-approved “Free Palestine” cap incited the alleged attack.

Two teens drowned in Coney Island surf

CONEY ISLAND — TWO TEENAGE GIRLS drowned off of Coney Island on Friday after being caught in rough weather, reports CBS News. Aisha Mohammed, 18, and Zainab Mohammed, 17, were standing in shallow water on the beach during a rainstorm around 8 p.m. when the wind and currents suddenly became heavier, according to the family, dragging the teens — who did not know how to swim — out to sea. The girls’ cousin, Shareef Mohammed, was also swept out and able to be saved, but rescuers struggled to reach Aisha and Zainab, pulling them from the water 90 minutes later. The teens were rushed to Coney Island Hospital in critical condition before later being pronounced dead.

Some witnesses earlier told ABC News that the girls had gotten out of the water and reentered during the rainstorm, but the family disputes this. A funeral and prayer service for Aisha and Zainab is planned.
