Rep. Malliotakis’ bill to fine schools for violating civil rights advances from House Ways and Means Committee
CAPITOL HILL — A BILL THAT WOULD LEVY FINES ON TAX-EXEMPT SCHOOLS has advanced from the House Committee on Ways and Means, its Congressional sponsor Nicole Malliotakis (R-11) announced on Tuesday, July 9. Just before the July 4 federal holiday, Malliotakis introduced the bill as academic institutions across the nation have dealt with often violent anti-semitic protests. The University Accountability Act, which focuses on protecting Jewish students on campuses, would fine tax-exempt schools that violate students’ civil rights under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act would require tax-exempt universities that meet the penalty criteria to pay a fine of either five percent of the school’s aggregate administrative compensation as reported on the school’s Form 990, or $100,000, whichever is greater. After three civil rights violations, the Internal Revenue Service would be required to review the university’s tax-exempt status for possible revocation.
The bill is expected to be calendared for consideration before the full House of Representatives.
