Over nine months of war between Israel and Hamas, Palestinian families in Gaza have been uprooted repeatedly, driven back and forth across the territory to escape the fighting. Each time has meant a wrenching move to a new location and a series of crowded, temporary shelters.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Israel is in the midst of its latest ground assault in Gaza’s largest city in its latest effort to battle what the army claims is the regrouping of Hamas militants — notwithstanding an earlier statement that the area had been mostly cleared.

A Russian court has convicted them of terrorism charges and sentenced them to six years in prison. The two women have already been jailed for over a year while awaiting trial. They have repeatedly rejected the accusations against them, the latest step in an unrelenting crackdown on dissent in Russia that has reached new heights since Moscow sent troops into Ukraine.

While Russian authorities claim that the women’s play, “Finist, the Brave Falcon,” justifies terrorism, Berkovich and Petriychuk have emphasized that it was written to prevent terror developments.

Ironically, Russia’s own Culture Ministry had awarded “Finist” with its Golden Mask award, its most prestigious national theater prize, the Associated Press reports. Likewise, Russia’s state penitentiary service had, five years ago, praised the play after it was read to inmates of a women’s prison in Siberia.

CAPE CANAVERAL — ‘Get me off of this planet’: A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, carrying a Turksat 6A communications satellite, lifts off at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Cape Canaveral, Fla., Monday, July 8, 2024. Turksat 6A is the first geostationary communications satellite to be built in Turkey. The project’s development is a decade in the making and involved several industry groups, among them the TÜBİTAK Space Technologies Research Institute, according to SpaceNews, which focuses on developments in the global space field.

Turksat 6A’s Ku- and X-band transponders will provide satellite TV and communications services over parts of Europe, the Middle East and Asia, including four Asian countries not currently covered by Turksat: India, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

HOUSTON — Nature’s revenge … don’t think he’s getting to work anytime soon: A vehicle is stranded in high waters on a flooded highway at Interstate-10 and Washington Ave. in Houston, on Monday, July 8, 2024, after Beryl came ashore in Texas as a hurricane and dumped heavy rains downtown. State and local officials warned it could take several days to restore power after Beryl barreled ashore as a Category 1 hurricane, killing three and cutting power to nearly three million homes and businesses as it toppled 10 transmission lines and knocked down trees that in turn flattened power lines.

As the storm heads northward, Major League Baseball officials postponed a scheduled July 9 game between the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals because of heavy rainfall from the hurricane’s remnant, which was moving through eastern Missouri on Tuesday.

Light from the spearfisher’s headlamp reflects off the eyes of the walleye, allowing them to spot the fish even in murky water. Walleye numbers in some lakes are dwindling due to warming waters, increasingly variable seasonal changes and lakeshore development. Losing the species would mean losing a food source for Ojibwe and other Indigenous people, a sovereign right to fish and a deep connection to tradition and nature.

The Ojibwe are a loosely organized nation which, during the 16th-17th centuries, successfully spread throughout the Great Lakes region. Their colonizing bands settled along lakes and rivers in an area now comprising northern Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. La Pointe on Madeline Island, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, remained the spiritual and commercial center of the Ojibwe nation.

CASTAIC — ‘Come get me when summer is over’: A person floats to cool off at Castaic Lake as temperatures rise, Monday, July 8, 2024, in Castaic, Calif. Castaic Lake is a reservoir formed by Castaic Dam in the Sierra Pelona Mountains of northwestern Los Angeles County. It is stocked with a wide variety of fish, which may be in danger given the prolonged heat wave.

The Castaic Lake State Recreation Area is currently open to visitors, but area officials are warning of an excessive heat wave and the possibility of wildfires.

LONDON — ‘This is what I would look like in the Space X rocket’: Alex de Minaur of Australia falls during his fourth round match against Arthur Fils of France at the Wimbledon tennis championships in London, Monday, July 8, 2024. According to Wimbledon’s website, de Minaur, seeded at number 9, played just 10 sets to advance into the last eight, with a couple of straight-sets victories and a walkover, and then the most recent a four-setter, that he won against Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, thus advancing him to the next round, where he will play either Novak Djokovic of Serbia or Holger Rune of Denmark.

Mr. de Minaur aims to become the first Australian champion in the gentlemen’s singles since Lleyton Hewitt won in 2002.

While bullfighting is one of Spain’s longstanding cultural traditions, the practice actually originated in ancient Rome; though according to archeological Greek wall paintings, it could have dated back to two millennia before Christ, according to a website for this year’s Pamplona festival.

CINCINNATI — Sliding in hot red: Cincinnati Reds’ Elly De La Cruz steals third base during the first inning of a baseball game against the Colorado Rockies, Monday, July 8, 2024, in Cincinnati. The Reds beat the Rockies 6-0 in a shutout game, although Colorado did manage to get in four hits. Both teams are behind in their win record for the season — Colorado severely so — with a 32-59 tally.

The Reds rank 4th in the National League Central, while the Rockies are at the bottom of the National League West.

LEBANON — As the IDF advances, the conflict becomes less contained: Lebanese shepherd Yussef Halimeh removes dead goats after an Israeli airstrike hit a house and killed hundreds of goats on their livestock pen, in Toura mountain, south Lebanon, Monday, July 8, 2024. The strikes come as tensions continue to boil between Lebanon’s Hezbollah group and the Israeli military along the Lebanon-Israel border over the past month and as talks for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip between Hamas and Israel are set to resume.

However, Hamas has warned that the onslaught of attacks will threaten any progress in talks and urged Israel to a cease-fire.
