Family suing city for $100 million over alleged antisemitic attack at son’s school
GRAVESEND — A JEWISH FAMILY plans to sue the city for $100 million over a brawl at their children’s P.S. 682 fifth-grade graduation celebration that plaintiffs Johan Nunez and Lana Lerner say was motivated by antisemitism, reports the New York Post. The dispute began during the ceremony on June 14, when a student walked across the stage with a Palestinian flag and a cap decorated with the message “Free Palestine,” causing Lerner’s mother to walk out of the auditorium. Lerner says the boy’s family then pushed her mother at a reception following the ceremony, leading to an exchange of words between the two groups before members of the other family allegedly began to punch and kick Nunez and Lerner while yelling about Palestine. Part of the fight was captured on video, in which Nunez is seen being held down by several other people as onlookers scream.
While one man from the other student’s party was arrested after the incident, other witnesses said that both families refused to stop the fight. The plaintiffs say that the school failed to provide proper security and that the school-approved “Free Palestine” cap incited the alleged attack.
