President Biden resolutely continues his re-election campaign as some top Democrat leaders urge him to step aside
CAPITOL HILL — PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN STOOD RESOLUTELY by his decision to remain the Democratic frontrunner, despite the call for him to step down. Biden sent a letter to congressional Democrats that rebuked the calls to drop his candidacy and emphasized the Democratic Party’s “one job” to defeat Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in November. Biden wrote the division within the Democratic Party over his ability to continue his campaign and lead the nation for a second term must end. A private virtual meeting that House Democratic leader and Brooklyn Congressmember Hakeem Jeffries (D-8) reportedly convened on Sunday with key Democrats in the House of Representatives, some of the participants told the New York Times, where they expressed alarm after Biden’s weak performance in the June 27 debate.
While some younger Black lawmakers are expressing concern over Biden’s ability to win in November, a coalition of older members of the Congressional Black Caucus have publicly stood up for the President, reports the New York Times. Among this group is Rep. Maxine Waters who refuted her colleagues’ call for him to step down during Sunday’s meeting.
