RED HOOK — NYC PARKS COMMISSIONER Sue Donoghue joined Brooklyn Commissioner Martin Maher and other officials on Tuesday to celebrate the official opening of a new skate and BMX park at Harold Ickes Playground in Red Hook. The $4.3 million investment transformed an underutilized asphalt softball field into a state-of-the-art space for BMX biking, skateboarding, parkour and boulder climbing, and includes a bike repair station and air pumps, benches, tables, landscaping and other amenities. After official remarks, local skateboarder Eric Hernandez “cut the ribbon” by skating through a banner. Parks consulted with the skateboard community and skateboard design firm Spohn Ranch to design the new facility.
“This new public resource gives New York City’s diverse skating and biking community a beautiful place to come together for some safe fun,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue.
