Rep. Malliotakis’ new bill would fine tax-exempt schools for failing to curb anti-semitism on campus
CAPITOL HILL — BROOKLYN CONGRESSMEMBER NICOLE MALLIOTAKIS (R-11) introduced new legislation that would fine tax-exempt schools that violate students’ civil rights under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. Malliotakis and a group of House Republican colleagues on Wednesday, July 3, introduced the University Accountability Act, drawn up as universities across the U.S. have come under fire for allowing so-called antisemitic students to wreak havoc. While Title VI in federal law prohibits discrimination based on race, color or national origin, schools that have not acted on this can potentially lose federal funds. A corrective action is frequently enough to bring the college or university back into compliance. The University Accountability Act would require universities that meet the penalty criteria to pay a fine of either five percent of the school’s aggregate administrative compensation as reported on the school’s 990 or $100,000, whichever is greater. After three civil rights violations, the IRS would review the university’s tax-exempt status for possible revocation.
Rep. Malliotakis pointed out if her bill is enacted, Columbia University, which has been at the epicenter of controversy, would be fined $1.9 million.
