NYPD reports drop in most major crimes except rape, felony assault in June

CITYWIDE — INDEX CRIMES OVERALL dropped 4% citywide in June 2024 compared to the same month last year, continuing a six-month trend, NYPD reported Wednesday. Most notable were a 21% decrease in murders versus June 2023; a 9.9% drop in grand larceny — auto; and an 8.8% decrease in burglary. Crime in the subway was down 15.3% in June compared to last year, according to the report. The bad news: reported rapes shot up 59.1%, and there was a 137% increase in hate crime incidents (the majority characterized as anti-Jewish). In addition, felony assaults were up 6.7%. There were also five additional shooting incidents in June 2024 compared to last year (109 vs. 104), but 41 fewer people have been shot and fewer killed year-to-date, the city pointed out. Index crimes include, murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny — auto.
These patterns were generally reflected in Brooklyn North and South precincts, though transit crimes were up 26.3% in Brooklyn South and down 30% in Brooklyn North. Shootings were up 50% in Brooklyn North, with a 64% increase in victims. There was no increase in shootings in Brooklyn South, though there were 18.2% more victims.
