MONGOLIA — Hyping up the crowd for the new election drop: Mongolian honor guards prepare for a ceremony marking the first session of the newly elected Parliament in front of the Government Palace on Sukhbaatar Square in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Tuesday, July 2, 2024. The square is named for Damdin Sükhbaatar (the patronymic name appears before the given name) after his 1923 death. Sükhbaatar was a revolutionary hero. Theories of his cause of death vary: some say he experienced a breakdown upon learning about a pending coup; others say he’d been poisoned. A statue of him has the horse with one hoof in the air; that usually means the personage died as a result of wounds sustained in battle.

Mongolia is a landlocked country that borders China to the south and Russia to the north. Its writing systems utilize both an alphabet resembling Russian and an Asian ideogram. As a child, Sükhbaatar learned to speak some Russian.

DEDHAM — When you beat the vehicular manslaughter allegations: Karen Read smiles during a news conference in front of Norfolk Superior Court, Monday, July 1, 2024, in Dedham, Mass. A judge declared a mistrial Monday after jurors deadlocked in the case of Read, who was accused of killing her Boston police officer boyfriend by striking him with her SUV and leaving him in a snowstorm.

The six-man/six-woman jury told Judge Beverly J. Cannone of Norfolk Superior Court that their deadlock was not a matter of a lone holdout but rather because “Our perspectives on the evidence are starkly divided … The deep division is not due to a lack of effort or diligence, but rather a sincere adherence to our individual principles and moral convictions,” according to a NY Times article published on Monday.

WASHINGTON D.C. — New Supreme Court ruling allows for the president to use tanner as long as it’s an “official act”: President Joe Biden speaks in the Cross Hall of the White House Monday, July 1, 2024, in Washington. On Tuesday, Congressman Lloyd Doggett of Texas became the first Democrat to publicly state that President Biden should withdraw his candidacy for re-election. The 77-year-old Doggett, whose district includes Texas’ capital city of Austin, said, “My decision to make these strong reservations public is not done lightly, nor does it in any way diminish my respect for all that President Biden has achieved. Recognizing that, unlike Trump, President Biden’s first commitment has always been to our country, not himself, I am hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw. I respectfully call on him to do so.”

Doggett is among many who were alarmed by President Biden’s poor performance in the June 27 debate, although his family urged him, during last weekend’s huddle at Camp David, to continue his campaign.
