New ‘book bar’ opens in Carroll Gardens
CARROLL GARDENS – A NEW COMBINATION bookstore bar has opened in Carroll Gardens to rave reviews, reports BK Magazine. Liz’s Book Bar, operated by novelist Maura Cheeks, offers cocktails, hot drinks and pastries at its mahogany front counter and tables and a selection of new and classic books curated by Cheeks on shelves in the back. The shop on Smith Street had its soft opening last week and has since been packed with enthusiastic locals, who told the magazine that they were excited to support a Black woman-owned small business. Cheeks plans to begin holding book talks, book club meetings and paint-and-sip classes later in the summer.
“I’ve always wanted to create a public space where people can connect with strangers and neighbors and just hang out… A place that’s not home, that’s not work, where you feel comfortable just spending time, is really important,” Cheeks told BK Magazine.
