Maimonides Health’s ‘Evening of Research’ celebrates academic work addressing treatments and equity
BOROUGH PARK AND DYKER HEIGHTS — Maimonides Health and the Maimonides Research and Development Foundation recently held their eighth annual Evening of Research to celebrate the innovative academic work from Maimonides staff, the hospital’s commitment to addressing healthcare disparities and advancing medical knowledge within the healthcare community. Held at the Dyker Beach Golf Course, the Evening of Research showcased all of the 106 abstracts received over the past year, reflecting an increase of 14 submissions compared to last year. Five winners were selected – two of which address healthcare inequities, a top priority for the hospital.
· Jessica Chung, M.D., MPH, examined in her paper how COVID has impacted patients’ timeliness in seeking medical attention, including those with life-threatening infections.
· Mukuhi Ng’ang’a, M.D. (Category: Fellow), investigated why clinical trials that established the standard treatment for triple-negative breast cancer did not include Black women, even though they are disproportionately impacted.
· Deidre Grant MSN, RN AHN-BC (Category: Performance Improvement) and the hospital earned recognition for their efforts in incorporating a patient’s care partner(s) during treatment and post-discharge to assist in recovery and decrease rates of readmission.
· Arshia Sandozi, D.O., MPH (Category: Resident) studied whether vaginal testosterone cream can effectively prevent recurrent urinary tract infections in postmenopausal women.
· Gene Sobol, MPH (Category: Staff) surveyed general surgery textbooks and concluded that images did not adequately reflect the current U.S. population in terms of skin tone.
Additionally, Ariel Schulman, M.D., urologic surgeon in Maimonides’ Division of Urology, was selected for the 2024 Austin A. Schlecker Academic Achievement Award. Maimonides’ Department of Nursing was also recognized with a special award for outstanding continuous commitment to research.
