GOWANUS — THE GOWANUS CANAL CONSERVANCY ON FRIDAY announced that it was selected to receive the American Society of Landscape Architects’ Olmsted Medal, which is awarded yearly to landscaping outsiders for environmental leadership and stewardship. The award honors Frederick Law Olmsted, the legendary designer of Central and Prospect parks, among many others. Founded in 2006, the GCC focuses on revitalizing the Gowanus Canal and neighborhood. The group grows and distributes urban-adapted native plants at its Lowlands Nursery, cares for local rain gardens and greenery, hosts community events and educates students on ecology and design skills.
The GCC is currently developing an Improvement District for the emerging network of public spaces around the Canal, as well as hiring and training underserved youth in leadership skills and community organizing.
