Scholars Vs. Collars game combines fun with diocesan school achievement awards

PROSPECT HEIGHTS AND CONEY ISLAND — THE POPULAR SCHOLARS VS. COLLARS softball game and award ceremony that the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn and its DeSales Media communications branch host each year takes place this Friday evening, June 21. The annual tradition at Maimonides Park in Coney Island celebrates Catholic schools in Brooklyn and Queens. Scholars and the Collars — the priests and school administrators — will compete on the ballfield before another treat, the Brooklyn Cyclones game against the Jersey Shore BlueClaws. Pre-game festivities include the presentation of MVP Awards to the salutatorians and valedictorians of the class of 2024. Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Paul Sanchez, Deacon Kevin McCormack, Superintendent of Schools, and Deputy Superintendent Joan McMaster will bestow the honors on this year’s eighth-grade graduates. Top honors will also be presented to students for their contributions to Tablet, Jr., a monthly insert in The Tablet newspaper with Christine Persichette, anchor of NET-TV’s Currents News, emceeing this segment. The 2nd Annual Tablet Junior Awards, the Social Justice Journalism and Art Awards during the 2023-24 school year carried the themeCatholic Social Justice Teachings.The Catholic Telemedia Network (CTN), a subsidiary of DeSales Media, sponsors the student awards ceremony.

A special bobblehead will be distributed to fans attending in support of Catholic education, honoring Father Kuroly, the President and Rector of Cathedral Preparatory School and Seminary.
