Brooklyn woman gets 20-to-life for killing senior in SUV attack

A Brooklyn woman was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for the murder of a 70-year-old woman during an attempted vehicular assault on a male acquaintance.
Layla Adredini, 33, of Stuyvesant Heights, was convicted of second-degree murder and attempted murder last month. According to Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, Adredini deliberately drove her 2003 white Ford Explorer onto the sidewalk in Ocean Hill on August 24, 2021, trying to run over a 50-year-old man. Instead, she struck Brenda Ann Whidbee, who was seated outside her home.
Adredini tried to flee but was stopped by neighbors. Whidbee, a beloved grandmother and community member, was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
“Today’s sentence holds this defendant accountable for her shocking and depraved actions that cost an innocent woman her life,” Gonzalez said. “While nothing can bring Brenda Ann Whidbee back to her family and friends, I hope this sentence offers them some sense of solace.”
Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Michael Kitsis handed down the sentence, while Senior Assistant District Attorneys Daphney Gachette and Gianna Del Grippo prosecuted the case.
