Mayor announces $1.3 million for Brownsville youth construction program
BROWNSVILLE — Mayor Adams and NYCHA CEO Lisa Bova-Hiatt announced a $1.3 million federal grant for the YouthBuild alternative education program on Wednesday, a six-month course building construction and career skills for at-risk youth who left high school. The grant will support 60 young adults (ages 16 to 24) from Brownsville NYCHA housing, with the first cohort expected to start this fall. In addition to a stipend and other services, YouthBuild participants will receive technical, lab and classroom skills instruction leading to certifications and credentialing, High School Equivalency exam instruction and career-readiness training, leadership development and a year of post-program job placement support. The students will also get hands-on experience through community service opportunities and the renovation of up to three vacant NYCHA units.
The program will help fulfill federal Section 3 requirements, which mandate training and hiring opportunities for recipients of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development assistance, and is being offered with the support of the Central Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation and the Brooklyn Public Library.
