BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Workers on Thursday were busy stocking shelves and hooking up cash registers to prepare for the Friday, June 7, grand opening of a new Foodtown Supermarket in Brooklyn Heights.

It’s the first supermarket to open in the neighborhood in 15 years, owner Nasri Mujalli told the Brooklyn Eagle — and he’s eager to give people another place to shop. “We’re coming in with competitive Foodtown prices,” he said.

The new 7,500-square-foot supermarket is on the ground floor of a residential building at 101 Clinton St. and Joralemon Street, formerly occupied by a Rite Aid. There will be five checkout lanes and local delivery.

Mujalli said that 40% of the products in the new store will be natural and organic. Foodtown stores, operating under the Allegiance Retail Services cooperative umbrella, feature the Green Way private label brand of natural and organic items, and Rancher’s Legend beef. Shoppers will also find a new seafood and sushi department, floral selections, daily fresh bread, cheeses and deli items.

Mujalli hopes neighbors can attend the festive ribbon-cutting ceremony. “We’ll be giving out samples, and will have face painting, cotton candy and popcorn machines,” he said.

There are more than a dozen Foodtown Supermarkets of varying sizes across Brooklyn. In January, a 15,000-square-foot Foodtown, owned and operated by the Widdi family, opened in Bushwick. In December 2023, a snug 4,500-square-foot Foodtown, owned and operated by the Elayyan family, opened on Atlantic Avenue in Boerum Hill.

The Mujalli family manages 12 supermarkets in the greater New York City metropolitan area, according to a release from Allegiance.
