Digital Coastal Campaign to coincide with CCF announcements in England.

Posted on

I was asked at 5.38 pm on Friday by colleagues in VE to distribute the follow. After a “harumph” reply from me, it transpires that they had only been asked to get involved earlier that day, whilst already engaged elsewhere.

I saw no point in bothering anyone over the weekend, and I nearly didn’t bother doing anything today.  I mention this only because I didn’t and don’t want to look stupid myself getting involved in the distributing something, “just after the nick of time”, especially when we all know the announcements in England have been on the cards for at least 4 month (and predictable for 12 plus). More importantly I didn’t want you to have any cause to wonder about  the sanity of colleagues in VE or indeed in DCMS.  I may have got the wrong end of the stick and/or my comments may not make me, or by default British Destinations, friends in high place, but there are occasions when someone needs to turn around and address the odd comment directly to the elephants in the room.

It’s a brilliant idea but how much brighter would its brilliance have been, if we’d all be given a few more working day’s notice?  Harumph!

Please see the note from DCMS below for your info:

To coincide with the announcement of the second round of coastal community funding, we are hoping to generate some digital engagement about the beautiful coastal communities in the UK.

We would be incredibly grateful if you could share the below plan with your regional/coastal tourism contacts. We’re keen for this to not only be shared with businesses that have benefitted from funding, but to be shared widely to encourage people to talk proudly about their coastal communities.

If you have any footage or existing content that focuses on coastal communities, please send across to Amanda.downey@culture.gov.uk and she will promoted this across the DCMS digital channels from Monday 26th January. Please also share content from your own digital channels.

Note to distribute to your contacts:

Coastal Communities Fund announcement

Digital Plan

Next week government will be announcing the coastal community projects that will benefit from the second round of Coastal Communities Funding. As part of the announcement Tourism Minister, Helen Grant will be visiting the Medway area of Kent to see some of the projects in action.

To highlight the fantastic Coastal Communities across the UK and the tourist attractions available in these areas, we will be promoting coastal communities via our digital channels including @DCMS on Twitter.

 How to get involved

–       Do you work in a coastal community? Share images of what it is like working in your area and why you enjoy it by using hashtag #mytourismjob and we will share them via @DCMS on Twitter and add to our Pinterest board http://uk.pinterest.com/dcmsgov/mytourismjob/.

–       Do you live in a coastal community? Tell us what you love about your community and why people should visit using #GREATdayout. Share pictures and we will add them to our Pinterest board http://uk.pinterest.com/dcmsgov/greatdayout/

On Monday 26 January the Department for Communities and Local Government will be sharing infographics and images from projects that have benefitted from funding on their Twitter account @CommunitiesUK and by using the hashtag #CoastalCommunitiesFund. Next week, DCMS will also be sharing posts on their blog (http://www.dcmsblog.co.uk/) from projects that have benefitted from the Coastal Communities Fund.

Destination Intelligence Survey 2014 update

Posted on Updated on

We are on target to get over 70% of the membership participating in this year’s free Destination Intelligence Survey; the highest percentage and the highest actual number of individual destinations we have had involved so far.

The deadline for completed improved  user-friendly forms remains 31 January and the offer of free assistance to both STEAM and Cambridge customers remains on the table.  If you have not yet completed the survey, or haven’t even started, then I would urge you to consider doing so now.

Having the benchmark to fall back on may not be a priority for you today but experience has shown that the day you do need it, is usually a day when it will prove utterly invaluable! It is well worth investing a little time in it whilst you can:

Tourism Alliance Parliamentary Reception 16 March 2015

There are a small number of  spaces available for representative from British Destination to attend the Tourism Alliance Parliamentary Reception 4 to 6 pm on Monday 16 March 2015 in the House of Commons.  Any representative of a British Destinations’ member wishing to be allocated one of these free places, on a first come first served basis, should contact me here.

Please don’t apply speculatively; if you say you are going to attend, then saving genuine last-minute disaster, I really do need you to be there.
