Loved this set as a kid!

Written by (AFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in Australia,

One of the classic LEGO space sets!

I can't remember why I was so excited to get this set - either it was my first white space-minifig, or because it had room to seat two astronauts, or the awesome-looking jet engines doubling as landing skids, or the (re)movable sensor/gun! But I definitely remember this as being one set I really wanted.

This set most definitely got swooshed around a lot and despite being so simple by todays standards offered a lot of playability.

Left the value-for-money at default since I have absolutely no idea how much it cost back in the day..

NB: It came with a standard classic-Space-Logo printed minifig, not a plain white one as per the description here.

    classicly brilliant

One of those sets, that you owned as a kid, and forgot about, that is until you stumble across the building instructions. That's when you remeber how much you played with it, it's just absolutely fantastic. I can recall times I used to play entire Saturday afternoons with just this spaceset. The engines, and gun are brilliant. The computer was the main part of the instruments of my own creations for nearly a decade...

    Nice aircraft for intraplanetary surveillance

Written by (AFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in Italy,

Nice iconic set from primordial classic space!

    Building experience:

Small set, solid construct, perfectly in line with all space sets from its age, like 918, 924, 928, 886, 889, 897. The long tip, two studs forward the printed slope, with bar handles used like front blasters, balances the width of the two 45° sweep angle wings. The finished set in real life looks nicer than the picture on the box, for example you can appreciate the elegant aerodynamic shape in front view.

    Parts:

All structural parts are gray, like all small sets from 1979 classic space, see 885, 886, 889, 894. Two beautiful printed parts are included, the gray slope with printed space logo 3298p90, and the gray slope control panel 3039p34.

Two versions of white spaceman could be found, depending on the year of production. In 1979 the spaceman had torso without printed space logo. A white sticker with the classic space logo was included in the set. After 1979 the spaceman had white torso with printed space logo.

    Playability:

The little ship has two seaters, so interaction with other sets is easy to imagine. The set is very instrumental related to its size. It has two micro thrusters on the upper side of the wing and two big air engines right under the wings, resembling the ones of an airplane. The cockpit mounts a mission console and two steering wheels, in order to switch mastership. The space torch can be rotated around its vertical axis, so it could be a searchlight for search and rescue operations, or it could be a telescope linked to the mission control for long range indirect vision. In general, the design of the ship suggests it is an intraplanetary aircraft made for surveillance missions over ground. The only little flaw is the lack of a realistic lift off/ landing mechanism, since it has no thrusters on the bottom for VTOL, nor wheels to take off from airstrip.

    Value for money:

Complete sets with instructions and box are very rare. Sealed sets are tricky since sealed sets from 1979 are far more precious than more recent ones, because of stickers. Because of its rarity it is a must have for big collections.

    Suggestion for a nice display:

The set is very cohesive with the other classic space sets from 1979. Using set 891 together with sets 885, 886, 889, 894, 897, 918, 920 you can make a super nice display with relatively cheap sets.

In conclusion, this small set looks really nice, it is swooshable and has lots of material for imagination.

I'm sure I'll be proven wrong, so give this classic its due.
