    An awesome figure!

Written by (TFOL , platinum-rated reviewer) in United States,

So the Surfer (aka Surfer Dude,) was the fifteenth figure in the LEGO Minifigures Series 2, and he's always been one of my favorites of the series. He was released in 2010, retailed for two dollars, and includes 5 pieces. So let's take a closer look!

Starting him off, we have that hairpiece, which does fit the figure, if you ask me. The part itself was not new for the figure, but the coloring was. And the sand blonde color really fits the figure if you ask me. I just really like how it looks on him.

Then we have his face, which looks pretty chill and fitting for a surfer. I love the stubbly beard, as well as that smirk, and his eyes look pretty relaxed. It's just a very fitting face if you ask me. No alternate face printing or anything, since it is 2010.

Then we have his torso, which has some great printing. We don't get shirtless yellow-fleshed figures all too often, so that's cool. He has those muscles on his stomach and all, and he just looks really ripped. I think he's been working with the Series 2 Weightlifter. He has no back torso printing either, which is sort of unfortunate, but oh well.

Then we have his legs, which do have some nice printing, though I do have 1 nitpick: it isn't dual moulded. And I didn't expect him to, since dual moulded legs weren't included until Series 14, but nonetheless, it looks weird, with that exposed...backside. Nevertheless, the printing rocks. I love that middle piece printing, with the tie and all, and the front printing has those awesome white flowers, as well as the black and blue detail. He has some side leg printing too, which is just blue on the upper half. The gap between the front and sides looks a little odd, but it was inevitable.

Then we have the best part of him: the surfboard. And while I don't think it was new for the figure, it was a new print, with those black palm trees and the orange background. Just some brilliant printing all around.

Overall, I think this is an awesome figure, especially for its time. He has great printing, and while I do think he has a few issues, he's excellent for two dollars. You get that hair in the exclusive color, as well as that excellent surfboard printing. He's also my favorite CMF surfer, as we did get one in Series 4 and Series 17. Just a great figure in the series, and also great value. And I think that wraps up this review! So check out my other Series 1 and 2 reviews, and thanks for reading!

    The Handsome Surfer

Written by (TFOL , silver-rated reviewer) in Israel,

The Surfer minifigure is one of the best figures in Series 2. He looks so cool, and ready to catch some waves! Lets talk more about him.

    • The Surfer has some great parts. The awesome wind-blown hair in blonde color (perfect for my sigfig!), a great muscles torso, Hawaiian swimsuit pattern, and an awesome new surfboard! Lots of awesome parts.

    Playability

    • He is a great figure, lots of fun things you can do with him. I think every kid thinks surfing is cool, so this figure will definitely be played with a lot.

    Value

    TinyTurbosCityAndToyStory Reviews Episode 17: Surfer

Written by (TFOL , silver-rated reviewer) in Australia,

The Surfer was my second Collectable Minifigure from Series 2 and he's not bad at all. I found him by trying to feel for the surfboard in the packets.

    Building Experience:

    It's a minifigure, can't expect too much.

    Parts:

Like all of the Collectable Minifigures the face is brand new and the torso printing is perfect. The surfboard is nice and compact and the black stand is quite useful. Leg printing isn't as good as expected.

    Playability:

Surf's up! There's hundreds of poses for this guy!

    Value for Money:

I paid AUD$3.75 for this Minifigure and when you factor in the new face and hair, torso printing and the surfboard, that's exactly right.

    Overall:

One of my favourite Collectable Minifigures from Series 2. I even bought a spare because the hair, torso and surf board are all so useful. Hours of fun, maybe.

    Why The Hate?

Written by (TFOL) in United States,

    Introduction

This is one of the Minifigures that I missed when it first came out, but I did get it in the Minifigure Accessory Pack #850449 that came with Surfer Guy, Surfer Girl and Hula Girl which I will review in the future; all of them separately and in pack form.

    Box and instructions

Like all collectable Minifigures, the Surfer Guy comes in a random blue (Series 2) polybag with images of other collectable Minifigures on the front. The instructions, if you can call them that, have on one side a Series 2 checklist for all of the applicable minifigures. On the other side, it shows how to construct a Minifigure and the numerous accessories from Series 2.

    Build

It’s a minifigure. (If you need it, instructions are provided.)

    Minifigure

Unlike some of the recent (negative) reviews, I really enjoy this Minifigure. I love his blond hair piece, with it's hair swished to the side (it’s one - if not my favorite - hair piece Lego has made so far). His face has a "this cool" smirk and 5PM stubble. The face is perfect for the hair piece, but with other hair styles, it doesn’t look as good (pirate captain hat being an exception).

Ah the torso! The reason so many people like to bash this minifigure. Personally, I think it’s a decent attempt by Lego to show muscles on a minifigure. Yes, I will grant that the orange muscle definition looks different from the typical Minifigure yellow, but they couldn’t make yellow-on-yellow, so orange was a logical choice to blend.

The swimming shorts look quite nice from the front, a mix of light blue/black and white stencil of tropical flowers (still manly!). But then you take a look from behind, and the Emperor has no clothes! (At best, he's wearing a light blue thong but I shudder at the thought. Best to think he narrowly got away from a shark.) Its an ugly mess, grading my score of him to a 4 instead of a 5.

He also comes with neat looking white decorative surf board, that features the white-on-black topical flower stencil on one end and a beautiful orange sunset and a palm tree on the other.

    Playability

The playability of one Minifigure is limited, but the nature of a surfer - complete with a smirk and a surf board - can yield some instant solo play adventures.

    Suggested pairings

If you got this guy, it probably was in addition to some other packs. But if he's all you got, I would suggest you pair him up with some other beach/tropical/water Legos. Pack #850449 is an accessory pack that includes Hula Girl, Surfer Girl, and (another) Surfer Guy with some BBQ-Beach Party scene pieces.

    Conclusion

Don’t let the bad reviews of Surfer Guy stop you from looking for him - he’s a great looking Minifigure that I’m glad to have him in my collection; only being knocked down a peg for the sad state of his rear-end swimming shorts. As of December 2013, he was available at select U.S. Lego stores as a part of a the pack #850449. Otherwise, you'll have to find him at places like Bricklink.

    Short Story

In a dark movie theater, on screen at Lego Island....

Surfer Guy was about to catch the biggest Lego wave of his life when he saw something out of the corner of his eye. A Lego Sharknado! The Sharknado came in so fast that - by the time he got to the top of the wave - sharks were coming in fast, right behind him.

He jumped the Sharknado 7000-meter wave, when the biggest shark came in and chomped down hard on his surf board. With the greatest of luck, Surfer guy was already activating his Surfboard rockets when the sharks teeth hit, allowing him to fly to safety as the shark lost his hold and fell back into the sea.

“We should have seen 'Separator of Doom' at the Palace Cinema instead, said 1UP to Sparky. That statement was met with agreement from the rest of Lego Islanders in attendance and they all walked out, except for Sleepy-head (Series 8) who was just using the movie theater to get a snooze.

    Not bad for a treehugger

    Written by (AFOL) in Germany,

I bought this one solely for the surfboard, to compare it to the classic ones and it is indeed nice.

    Pros:

    • surfboard
    • hair

    Cons:

    • chest outline neon orange (not dark orange as pictured)
    • legs: print doesn't cover the back (looks like he's wearing a speedo) or below torso (so you can't really lean him backward)
    • legs: front print doesn't cover edges (yellow line visible)

    Conclusion:

Buy it if you like the surfboard. I really hate how they manipulated the product images to misrepresent the product.
