    LEGO Power Miners - Magma Mech - Set 8189 - Review

    Written by (AFOL , rhodium-rated reviewer) in Germany,

    The Magma Mech (8189) is a great LEGO Power Miners set which came out in January 2010. It comes with 2 minifigures in this set. The instructions have no mistakes and the set has no missing pieces.

    Minifigures:

    • Fireax: Fireax is the new lava monster. He looks much more evil than the rock monsters. He comes with a crystal which he can eat.
    • Miner: The new miner minifigure comes with a new double-sided, silver, hightech armour. He also comes with a new visor and he has a double-sided face.

    Mech:

    The mech is awesome. It comes with a water cannon which you can turn. It has a rubbery pipe which is connected with the water canister and the water turret. The best thing about this mech is the claw, which is made out of LEGO Technic parts.

    Positive:

    - New minifigure design
    - Better looking monsters
    - Claw is awesome
    - Water turret

    Negative:

    - This set has some stickers.
    - Cockpit does break easily if you want to put in the minifigure

    All in all, it's a great set to get, and I would highly recommend you to get this model. You can find this set on eBay and BrickLink for sure. Here is the link where you can check out the full gallery I made for this set on my website: www.klokriecher.de

    Truly amazing!

    Written by (Unspecified , bronze-rated reviewer) in Australia,

    This set is very nice. The minifigures are the highlight of the set. I really like the firax lava monster, it is transparent orange and has awesome new black rock arms. The miner is almost equally as awesome. It is one of the new silver armoured miners with a new visor piece. Unlike the Fire Blaster or the Lavatraz, the miner has an agents 2.0 armour piece. The magma mech is quite large, being as tall than the crystal king. The only bad thing about it is the legs, it can be a real pain in the neck standing it upright without it flopping down all the time. I have always loved the silver plates on the side of the cockpit, they are a really nice part of the set. Finally, we have the weapons. The scissor claw works quite well and i really like the blue drill piece. Even know it looks a bit silly, the blue fire piece is a nice little piece to have in your collection.

    Pros:

    * silver miner

    * trans. orange firax

    * scissor claw

    * blue drill piece

    Cons:

    * the legs are too floppy

    Overall:

    If you are planning to buy this set, i would recommend you buy it, because i rate it 5/5!

    Possibly my favorite Lego set I have

    Written by (TFOL , gold-rated reviewer) in United States,

    I never was going to get any 'core of the earth' Power Miners sets. I just didn't really get it. With he release of the Crystal King and the Mining Base, it seemed Power Miners was over. But I read some reviews, and mechs just grow on me. Plus I like PM.
    The building was rather entertaining. Building the front with all the small parts and the claw was all very fun. Now onto the minifigs
    Firax- Apparently, this is Firox's cousin or something. I like the regular Rock Monster look over the lava monsters, but it's still good. The eyes of the lava monsters is probably the greatest downfall. The head has some spikes, which are supposed to represent flames. The black detailing is also cool having cracks in it.
    Miner (Duke? I'm not good with names)- Oh my goodness this is probably my favorite minifig of all time and deserves a full-on inspection. The legs have a nice shiney metalic print on it. It also has a belt. The body has a silver shiny metallic print on it, and on both sides. On the chest it has a drill symbol. The head is the metal headplate guy. Not much to say. He also has some body armor with, you guessed it, the shiny metalic color. The helmet is the same PM helmet, only with a cool visor and in the previously mentioned color. Just all of the shininess of him makes him look awesome.
    The parts are good. You get an orange crystal, and two of Tahu Mistika's blades. In addition to that, you get two silver tread pieces, a blue transparent dome, a blue drill, and a blue fire (water) piece. Plus there are the neat ball and socket bricks.
    I rated playability a four mainly for poseability. Playability-wise, you have a neat extending arm, which doesn't really work. It would be nicer if the claws were sideways so it could grab the monster. Sadly, there is no gimmick to spinning the drill. The poseability suffers. There isn't much ankle movement which is bad when he doesn't have knees. There are also no elbows, but that's not too bad. I also don't like the ratchets. Sure they're stronger and hold more weight, but some areas are fragile and will pull apart when the arms are turned.
    I'm also going to make a small side note. This mech, despite being larger, has many similarities to the Mine Mech. Both have claws, a digging tool (saw and drill), a light on the top, vent pieces on the toes, and no knees (though this is just a design issue). Interesting to say the least.
    Yes, I'd pay $20 for this. I highly recommend getting it. In my opinion this should be one of the sets that's on the top of your list.

    A great set!

    Written by (TFOL) in United States,

    I love this set, it ranks my third favorite Power Miners set (I own all $35 and less). This set is the longest twenty-dollar build I have ever built, and I've built a lot! The new miner is sweet! As is the Lava monster! There are very few sets I would exchange this for, I play with this one more than any other set I have!

    Pros:

    • Works perfect!
    • Lava monster!
    • New SUPER cool silver miner!
    • Water cannon!

    Cons:

    • Falls apart after 13 throws at a wall.
    • Melts when put under extreme heat.
    • breaks after 3 stomps.

    That's all!
