LEGO Indiana Jones - Fighter Plane Chase - Set 77012 - Review

Written by (AFOL , rhodium-rated reviewer) in Spain,

The Fighter Plane Chase (set 77012) is a set from 2023 with 3 minifigures and 387 pieces. It's an awesome build with great playability. The build contains 2 vehicles: A plane and a car, which Indiana Jones and his father - Henry Jones sr - used to escape the plane. On top of it, we get a sign to Berlin. The signs have a sticker.

    Minifigures:

The minifigures, we get in this set are a WW2 pilot, Indiana Jones and his father Henry Jones sr. Indy got a great update with the hair, which sticks out of the hat. Henry Jones sr also has some great updates compared to the last time LEGO made this figure, back in 2009. It's unfortunate that the briefcase is a 1x1 tile and not the traditional suitcase piece.

    The vehicles:

The first vehicle we get in this set is a plane. The fighter plane has two stud shooters and a sticker on the transparent windshield. I think the transparent pieces should be prints, because you may be able to see the fingerprints, when you apply them. The propellor spins a full 360°, however you have to spin it manually and not while you move the tyres of the landing gears. All in all, it's a very swoosheable plane. The only problem I have with the plane is, that you have to remove it's wings manually, if you want to remake the scene, when it crashed into the tunnel.

The car is a fantastic build, too, which almost fits in the Speed Champions category these days. Indiana Jones and his father can sit inside the car and we also get a spot for the suitcases. I also like the details, we get with this vehicle.

    Positive:

    Great pieces and building techniques
    Playability
    Displayability
    Minifigures
    Swoosheable plane

    Negative:

Stickers (especially on the transparent pieces)
Propellor of the plane doesn't spin, while the wheels move
The wings of the plane have to be removed manually, if you want to make the scene, when it crashed into the tunnel

All in all it's a great set to get and I would highly recommend you to get this model. I bought this set at Smyths and you can also find this set on eBay and BrickLink for sure. Here is the link where you can check out the full gallery I made for this set on my website: www.klokriecher.de

Maxbricks14 Lego 77012 FIGHTER PLANE CHASE review

Written by (TFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in New Zealand,

77012 FIGHTER PLANE CHASE is quite underrated compared to the other two Indiana Jones sets from this year. I got it as soon as it was released along with 77013 Escape from the lost tomb.

    Minifigures:

The minifigures are awesome and the builds as well. The Indiana Jones figure is my favourite compared to the other Indys because of his tie. And they did a great job with his double-sided face. It looks just like Harrison Ford's smirk; the hat-hair combo is nice too. I was surprised at how accurate the German pilot is to WW2, but I am pleased at how well they did it. Henry Jones senior's updated torso looks better than the old one, but his face looks less like Sean Connery, in my opinion. I wish they had swapped his hat for a newer, more accurate one.

    Builds:
A re-make of the D-EKVY plane from the original set is what I would have preferred, but nonetheless, the car is fine and looks quite good with the plane. The updated fighter plane is easily the star of the show. It is reasonably historically and film accurate and what i think is the best plane build lego has ever done, from the landing gear to the tail fin. It has no problems other than that the flames are annoying for display but can be easily taken off. Also, when applying the windshield sticker you might end up with air bubbles underneath it, or placing it off-set, like I did. I wish it had been printed. The wing snapping off feature is good for play and could be used for a stop-motion when the plane goes into the tunnel. Disappointingly, the sign is inaccurate to 1939 as it looks straight out of 2023; it needs to be wooden! (only a history geek like me would notice that) The sign has a reference to where they came from (Berlin) and the top one has a picture of a tunnel in which they are about to enter.

    Packaging:

The box art is good and is much like the old art of the original 2008–9 sets. It is probably my favourite box art for a set. I just love the rolling hills in the background, and the position the builds are in, with the plane trying to shoot the Jones boys! But rather disappointingly, the instructions are horrible. They are bland and boring. Why didn't they put some neat cover art on the front?

Other than that, I love this set. One of my favourites in my collection. 10/10 highly recommend it.

    Fighter Plane Chase (5/5)

Written by (AFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in United Kingdom,

Firstly, what an ingenious way of suggesting the presence of a tunnel entrance without actually giving us pieces with which to build one.

The new Indiana Jones minifigure is a bit of a design triumph. It's a sort of wizardry that Lego designers employ to capture the exact features of Harrison Ford (sans nose) on a tiny piece of plastic, but with the new hat/hair piece that was really the only thing missing from the previous iteration of the character, it's probably one of Lego's most successful likenesses, challenged only by Henry Jones Sr. I'm convinced this figure looks more like Sean Connery than Sean Connery did in the film, and is another superb execution, marred only by the silly-looking hat. I wouldn't expect them to make a new mould—but surely a better one exists somewhere already? The pilot, while more straightforward, is also great.

Vehicles are my bugbear when it comes to MOCs and so I have a natural respect for anyone who designs Lego cars so effortlessly, while still employing different techniques so they're not all the same. I still feel like opening doors (consistently) is the next step for vehicles at this scale, but with this example it isn't an issue as there's no roof. The shaping is excellent and I very much like the windscreen frame. The plane is probably even better, and is certainly more interesting due to the comparatively infrequent nature of its subject matter in Lego form. The glaring issue (the only one with the set as far as I'm concerned) is having to apply the transparent sticker to the cockpit window. Transparent stickers are more difficult than normal, because they only allow for one go, and if like me, you start at one end rather than in the middle, it's almost certainly going to end up off-centre and there's nothing you can do about it. It's my fault, but it's irritating that it needed doing when it should have been a printed element.

That is more or less the only negative I can think of. The play features are brilliant too, allowing for the wings to come off the plane (and are very easy to reattach). It would have been nice for Henry Sr.'s book to be an actual Lego book rather than a 1×1 tile. The scale would look off, but to me that's still preferable as long as it looks recognisably like a book, rather than a pack of cigarettes. At £30 I'm not sure there's a better value set of similar size on the market at the moment, and the brilliant designs mean you don't have to be an Indiana Jones fan to enjoy it. Helps though!
