For those with Tony Stark's wallet?

Written by (AFOL , silver-rated reviewer) in United States,

To address the iron elephant in the room, $90 is a lot to ask for this set. I cannot recommend it at full price, but it seems that enough people share this opinion because I did eventually pick up this set from walmart at about 30% discount. $60 is still a bit of a jaw-clencher, but much more endurable. With that out of the way, the set does have its merits:

    Building Experience 3/5

A variety of small yet detailed builds keep things interesting and explore some of the more versatile of recent detail elements, and even the repetitive armour display cases utilise parts that speed the process along. The included 6-wide vehicle really rounds out the build experience and gives you something to zoom around if toolboxes aren't your thing. The finished set is quite detached, being made up of several satellite minibuilds and requiring an imaginary basement or warehouse to bound the area. Perhaps a $90 value would have been found in a model with a more substantial floorplan?

    Parts 4/5

Transparent light blue provides a nice "tech" undercurrent and gives you a decent start on an office building if you decide to blow up all your suits of armour, and the car gives you a few rare transparent yellow rounded tiles. The toolboxes are populated with a pack of modern power wrenches and other ambiguous equipment that will delight the dedicated "greeblers" amoung us.

    Playability 5/5

There is no denying that it is a very playable set, even as the loose minibuilds detract from the coherence of the set they lend commendable heft when it comes to introducing a new workshop configuration or support interaction between the included minifigures. Playability is further boosted by ignoring strict continuity in the reference material for the sake of filling gaps in the availability of Iron Man characters in minifigure form; we are treated with a full cast of highly recognisable roles from multiple Iron Man storylines.

    Value for Money 3/5

See above, but remember that 8 minifigures is nothing to scoff at in a set this size. That count certainly doesn't justify the RRP, but I would be comfortable with a relaxation of my usual 10-cent-per-piece guideline in this case. For anyone focused on Marvel minifigures and Iron Man in particular, this set is worth looking for now when discounts are possible. I have a feeling that Whiplash and some of the other suits here will keep secondary market prices high, possibly as high as the current price tag we all ridicule.
