Time Travel with your Favorite Wild-Eyed Scientist.

Set #71230 Back to the Future Fun Pack: Great Scott, we’ve created a paradox, Marty! We must go Back to the Future!! Doc Brown joins the ranks of LEGO Dimensions characters voiced by Christopher Lloyd himself and this is a brilliantly fun little addition to the Series 1 collection.

    Packaging

Doc is using his remote to control the time train as it is about to travel through time on the front of the package artwork display. Otherwise expect the packaging to be the same as every other Fun Pack in design and functionality.

    Parts

I believe this set features a fairly limited number of parts, there are some pearl gold telescopes and binoculars but nothing rare or unique as far as colours and things is concerned.

    Minifigures

Doc Brown: Again all of the parts were first seen in the Cuusoo set for the DeLorean minus the brand new hair piece being sculpted and introduced for this more accurate character design. His accessory is a walkie talkie piece with a control stick attached to represent a remote.

    The build

Traveling Time Train & Alternate Builds: Much like the DeLorean in the Level Pack this vehicle build is very impressive and uses a very nice number of parts to make the train, unfortunately it does not include the coal car that the actual movie included as part of Doc’s new time machine at the end of Part Three.

That being said all three models are still solidly build and incorporate the parts quite nicely, the locomotive is very solid looking and matches what you’d expect of a locomotive from the 1850s, the flight model build shifts everything around similar to the DeLorean to make a hover train and the third model is built modifying the flying model into an armed missile launching train. Overall some very solid builds.

    The completed model

Traveling Time Train: This model looks like a locomotive and rolls on four ‘wheels’ when removed from the toy tag. Solid build that does its best to include the detailing that the modified futuristic train prop possessed.

Flying Time Train: Several parts are shifted around in the build to construct a hovering train model that can sit right at home next to the hovering DeLorean from the Level Pack. It’s a fairly solid little model and quite fun.

Missile Blast Time Train: The smokestacks from the flying model are rebuilt into missiles on the side of the main engine as a weapon emplacement. A slightly weaker model, but still relatively decent looking and a fun toy when removed from the tag.

    The Digital Content

The Adventure World: Everything I said in the Level Pack review still stands, this is one of my favorite Adventure Worlds and is more akin to three worlds in one due to the nature of the time traveling adventures in Hill Valley.

Characte & Vehicle Abilities: Doc can use Hacking, Technology, Fix-It, Intelligence and Drone Mazes for his abilities, this is a solid offering and everything is great aside from the Drone Maze ability, I’m just not a fan of this puzzle element in the game because quite frankly there are always really stupid glitches whenever you try to control a drone and send it into the mazes.

The Traveling Time Train can use Accelerator Switches and Time Travel ports, the second model becomes a Flying vehicle able to access Flight Docks and Flight Cargo Hooks as well as the Tow Bar ability while still being able to travel through time. The Missile Blast model has all of the same abilities as the flying train while swapping Tow Bar for Destroy Silver LEGO Objects, overall a useful number of parts.

    Overall opinion

Doc Brown is a must have character if you want to use the Drone Mazes, while there are a small number of characters capable of using this power Doc just has tighter control of his drone compared to Ethan Hunt and the Cyberman and his voice work being done by Christopher Lloyd himself make for some great lines from the one and only Doc Brown himself. Admittedly he doesn’t unlock much in-game content that is needed, aside from Doc’s ability, but just hearing Fox and Lloyd sharing lines in the game proper is a blast from the past and a true delight. Strongly recommended.
