A Set Most would get for the Excellent, Mediocre, and Disappointing figures (BUY THIS SET FOR THE NEW TINKER BELL!)

Written by (TFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in United States,

This is a review of set 43212 Disney Celebration Train. I will be looking at this set from the perspective of a Lego Collector while also keeping in mind that this set was created for very young Lego fans.

    Build Experience

Let’s start off here. I used the digital building instructions for this. 4+ sets are a really odd build. One step in regular instruction is equal to two pages in 4+ sets. It was quite tedious due to that. I’m not sure how a 4-year old would feel about that as I am not that age.

There were two things I found a bit challenging in this set and also one thing that might confuse younger fans. The turntable on Wood’s train car required a precise placement of a piece. Nothing too frustrating or extremely challenging for a seasoned builder like me, but it was a little hard. Putting the skirt on Minnie Mouse was a bit hard for me. It would not want to stay down. A cloth skirt is definitely better than the hard plastic skirt as you can sit down the figure. One final thing I thought might be challenging was putting the sail on Peter Pan’s train car. For me, it was simple but some younger fans may not understand how to put it on. However, it’s good to have a few challenging things like this in a 4+ set as this can help younger builders become more seasoned builders. Scores a 3/5 for me

    Parts

No super interesting parts in this set. Having the pirate sail is cool but there’s not much you can do with just one sail. The sheriff sign for Woody is also cool. The downside is that these parts are a little too cartoony. The sheriff sign is especially a bit too cartoony. It was definitely work for a more fantastical Wild West setup. There were no stickers in this set which was really nice. Really, there weren’t any totally useful pieces. The train car piece is too juniorized and I have no idea how to use that for anything else. Giving it a 3/5 as there’s nothing horrible or anything great.

    Minifigures

The figures are a big draw for most people and are for me. We get Tinker Bell in a cheaper set and a minifigure version of Moana. We also get Peter Pan and Woody for those who missed out previously. There’s also of course the inclusion of Mickey and Minnie Mouse which is very nice.

Some figures are a bit underwhelming, especially Peter Pan. His CMF version was much better and had much more detail, especially on the legs. This version should have at least included dual molded legs to make the legs look less plain. I also don’t like the way his belt looks. It’s completely straight instead of a bit curved. It looks like it was just slapped on there. I must say that on the back, I like how his collar is printed on there. That definitely completes the look. Also a bit interesting that he doesn’t have his knife. Is it because it’s a strange piece for 4-year olds or is it because Lego does not want violence in these sets? Eh, probably the first one. The Lego knife piece is a bit strange and has this extra piece that 4-year olds might not know what to do with it and stick it in their mouth.

I think Mickey Mouse is also a bit underwhelming. He looks a bit plain without leg printing. Minnie Mouse is also a bit flawed in the fact her skirt is sort of weird. It’s a little hard to get her skirt right. In the other hand, Woody is just the way he was in the Toy Story sets from 2019. Looks perfectly fine and is perfectly collectable.

Tinker Bell does not have a “waist-cape” similar to the Star Wars figures. However, I think the printed part looks perfectly fine. It goes all around and to the back. The wings are also an improvement. Lego has gone the extra mile to create special wings I think. Definitely looks better. Maybe the best version of Tinker Bell we have yet?

Moana is definitely the highlight figure here. She is new and Lego went all out on her. She gets dual molded legs and good leg printing. I feel like her hair is just a copy of the one from Disney Princesses but I don’t think that matter at all. If Moana’s great leg printing is the reason why Peter Pan looks so lame, I think that’s perfectly fine. It’s better to have a new high quality figure and bad quality figure that’s been released over a high quality figure that’s already been released and low quality figure of a new figure.

    Playability

I’ll go over this category quickly. It’s just a fun little trains for younger kids. Not the best, not the worst. There are probably more fun sets for youngsters but this’ll still do. 3/5

    Value for Money

Kind of hard to justify spending $40 for this set. Though, it’s definitely one of the easier 4+ sets to digest, especially with these new figures. If you have none of these figures, it’s a good set to go out and maybe(?) buy. I had three figures in mind for this set so a slightly lower price, like $32, was easier to digest. However, 5 have already been available. So, those people would be going out to buy a $40 set for that one figure. Also, you would have those strange leftover pieces which would be hard to use. I’ll give it a 2/5.

    Final Statement

I enjoy the figures. The build, not so-much. For probably the worst set of the Lego Disney 100 theme, this is pretty good. You get good figures which is not something you can say about every Lego set. I’m happy that I own this set, which is something I can't say about every 4+ set, and you will likely be too due to the minifigures. A set not for every collector but a set a collector can enjoy.
