    Above and Below Expectations

Written by (AFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in Sweden,

As a Gift With Purchase, this is a nice addition to the Botanical Collection, but of course it doesn't quite stand up to the main sets there. I think mainly because it doesn't depict anything specific, just a flowery collection of greenery in a funky pot. It's also not as refined of a build. But again, it's not a fully fledged member of the series, just a nice little extra. And as such, it's more than I thought it'd be.

Building it, I was surprised by its relative bulk. The pot is similar in volume to the one for the Orchid, if not bigger. The plants are colourful, and together they form a very lush little arrangement. To me, the whole thing looks better in person than any of the official images manage to convey.

The pot is a bit plain, unsurprisingly, as it's basically just four very specialised pieces. When you pick it up, it also feels very light and hollow. And flimsy. Each of the individual plant stalks is just attached by a single stud inside the core of the pot. I'm amazed it holds together as well as it does, but it needs to be handled with care to say the least.

In terms of building experience, it was one of the worst I've had lately. Even though the final result looks intricate and varied, the plants are repetitive builds with similar constructions. That would have been acceptable on its own, but the flimsiness of it all is not really acceptable for an official set. It requires a steady hand with a delicate grip.

I didn't have a steady hand with a delicate grip the day I assembled this. But I'm definitely going to defend myself by shamelessly blaming the design. The core of the pot simply disintegrated as I folded up those balloon pieces and tried to press them into place. As a result, I had a split second of slow-motion experience watching the entire assembly gracefully glide through the air, knowing the inevitable was about to happen. As it hit the floor, my perception of time instantly went back to normal and a few hundred pieces of plastic went trickling across the floor in all directions. Like a piece of tempered glass simply exploding by the impact. It was beautiful. Disheartening, but beautiful.

On the positive side, this gave me twice as much entertainment as I thought it would, as I got to assemble it again. And it was all just a bonus from acquiring another set I was going to get anyway. In fact, this GWP probably did exactly what it was supposed to, as it gave me a push to spend big at the right time.

I'm happy I got it. But I wouldn't spend much on it separately.
