When Cosmic Cardboard Adventures was announced as the winner of the Lego Ideas Out of this World Competition, I was incredibly pleased as I loved the original submission. Having built the set, my expectations were met to the letter.

I adore little sets like these which are entirely self-contained. You get a delightful build of a child's room, with enough detail through the curtain, stars on the wall and toy spaceship to give an impression of depth and a lived-in quality. The little touches with the haphazard scissors, toy soldiers, and paintbrush strewn about in a manner no former kid can ever not empathise with are brilliant, not to mention the beautiful rug which rarely gets seen anyway once the cardboard spaceship is placed on it, yet it's there!

As for the cardboard spaceship itself, it epitomises the beauty of creativity and imagination at a young age. There's of course the 'slapped together' quality to it, with the brown pieces combined with more colourful elements to make something that wouldn't be amiss in our bedrooms once upon a time. The print on the child's torso is awesome, and the little teddy bear mech which accompanies him along with his cat just make for a charming little ensemble.

Whenever I look at this, I'm struck with a simultaneous sense of cosiness balanced with a yearning to go out and explore the universe. No Lego set captures an ideal childhood quite like this one does, and it gets top marks from me.
