    Better than bigger

Written by (AFOL , gold-rated reviewer) in Germany,

This is the third small polybag set recently release in the Technic line. (The others being Helicopter and Wheel Loader.)

    The Set

The bag size is similar to other polybags. You'll get a handful of pieces and a small bit folded bit of paper that unfolds to a rather big doubled sided instruction sheet.

Each building step adds 1..4 pieces. There are also small sub-assemblies.

Construction of the set heavily relies on the use of 2M lever. Besides the fork lift there is a pallet similar to 42079 or 8416).

Surprisingly, there is a single non-friction grey 2L pin as spare: only one other is used in the model. I would have expected a spare trans-orange cone or an additional 2M lever...

    The Model

Despite the red parts I find the finished model rather dark in appereance.

There is a single "technic" function: The elevation of the fork is set by turning the warning light cone. The use of a worm gear allows to stop at any height.
The model appears to be well balanced as the folded instruction sheet can be handled quite well as goods on the pallet.

    Summary

Although there is only one function available, this model offers a good playability. It's an nice entry set which I would rate better than last years loader.

Unfortunately these polybag sets are difficult to find as there is no official release date. They need to be hunted down - perhaps to add to the fun?

    (Further) Thoughts

I believe the design to operate the fork relies on several clever exploits:

    • Lower elevation limit is stopped by 2M levers that rest on the chassis. Without these the linkage to the fork could go into a locked state.
    • Upper elevation limit is stopped by the cross block piece of the cabin roof.
    • There is (just enough) slack in the mounting bracket to allow the fork to pick up the pallet.
    • Axle stops on the fork are prevent the pallet from sliding off.

I assembled a draft of the set from my parts towards a colour scheme that I would like better.

    New Builder Very Impressed

    Written by (AFOL) in Canada,

Just started getting into Lego, never really played with it as a kid, so wanted to get some to start a collection.

Had a bad day at work, saw this in a poly bag at my local dollar store, and decided the $5 was more than worth it for a first set.

The build itself was complicated and involved, seeing as I am very inexperienced and this is a technic set (something Ive never used before, even when I did use Lego as a kid), but the instructions were clear and easy to follow even for someone like me. I think it would have been better to get a larger technic set with a larger instruction manual, as this one did not include the pieces needed for every step, and sometimes I got a little lost while assembling it.

I like the functioning forklift aspect, which makes me glad I got a technic set, as, even as an adult, playability is one of the things that excites me most about building Lego.

Overall really impressed with the whole set. It took me an hour to build, and looks really good when completely assembled.
