A Great Set With Only Very Minor Flaws

Written by (AFOL , silver-rated reviewer) in United States,

The Havoc Marauder is the Bad Batch's ship that they use for personal transportation. To date, this is the only Lego Bad Batch set. In that regard, it's an excellent set. It is amazing that they ditched the "Knights of Ren" style of making these named armor-clad characters. In this set, you'll get all 4 members of the Bad Batch, plus Crosshair. You won't need to buy 2-3 other $80-$100 sets just to get the whole group. Though the speeders are trivial, the Marauder itself looks decent enough that their inclusions don't detract from the rest of the set.

    Box/Instructions

The box features the Bad Batch in the upper right hand corner, carrying with the theme of basing that design off of specific shows/movies, rather than a singular design for the whole year. The instructions are of the new binding that appeared a few years ago, which is much better than the old way, which would fray and disintegrate very easily and very quickly.

    Parts

Lego has made the choice to depict the Marauder in sand blue rather than gray, and I personally think it looks great. It's accurate to the show, and blue non-Separatist ships are few and far between in Lego Star Wars. I also really like the stickers used inside the ship; they add nice detail. And the printed cockpit piece is great too.

    Minifigures

The minifigs in this set are excellent, though there are a few minor issues.

Hunter is the leader of the Batch, and his minifig is amazing. His helmet looks great, especially since it fits with all the other new style of clone helmets. The helmet itself isn't too big or too small, and the same can be said about the printing. His face printing is accurate, and his included hairpiece looks accurate as well. The only problem with Hunter is that his backpack is not included, which is a common theme in this set. Fortunately, it isn't too hard to make one yourself, or you can simply leave him as is, since it isn't that big of a deal.

Wrecker is the guy the Batch goes to when they want to blow something up, or need brute strength. As a result, he's physically bigger than the rest of the Batch in the show, something that the minifigure accurately portrays. His armor looks great, and the use of an Iron Man helmet looks surprisingly good.

Tech is the brains of the Bad Batch, and his minifig also looks outstanding. His new helmet mould looks accurate, though it is ever so slightly oversized. Unlike the rest of the Batch, he strangely enough DOES have a backpack. His armor is medium stone gray rather than pearl dark gray, and I think this does a good enough job of conveying that Tech's armor is lighter than the rest of the group.

Echo has been one of my personal favorite clone troopers since he first appeared in The Clone Wars in 2008, and it feels so wonderful to finally have a minifigure of him. That said, I think he is the weakest minifig in the set, for two reasons. First... no cloth kama for Echo? Aargh!

They made one for the Phase 2 Captain Rex, and for an ARC trooper in 2012! Why couldn't they do one here? And the second reason is that his right hand is supposed to be a cybernetic apparatus for connecting into droid ports. Instead, they simply gave him a different colored hand. Even so, he's still a decent minifig, especially with his superb arm printing, but he has the most flaws out of the bunch.

Crosshair is given his black proto-Death Trooper armor rather than his pre-Order 66 gray armor. I think he looks great; the green in his visor looks amazing when contrasted with the black helmet. No backpack again unfortunately.

    The build

This set consists of three main builds; the Marauder itself, and then two speeders. The black BARC speeder is almost identical to the one in the 501st Battle Pack, just with a different colour scheme. Personally I'd rather they'd have left this speeder out, and instead chose to beef up the shuttle. Crosshair doesn't use a BARC speeder in the show, and so the only reason why Lego probably included this was just for play value. That's a fair compromise I suppose, especially since leaving out the speeder probably would have also meant leaving out Crosshair for a future set.

The lime green speeder is some type of civilian model, and of the two speeders, this one is the one that makes the most sense to include the set. I would still rather have a beefed up Marauder, but it's not like the speeder is bad or anything. It's a pretty neat design actually, especially in the lime green.

The star attraction of this set would be of course the Havoc Marauder. I think it looks outstanding; very striking, especially in the sand blue. The front of the ship is nice and sleek, and it has enough room to actually hold all four of the Batch, unlike the Knights of Ren transport.

    Playability

Because of the inclusion of the two speeders, this set has a lot of play value. The only problem is the way the Marauder opens up; the set (visually at least) practically begs to be picked up by the big center wing. If you do that, you'll open up the rest of the ship, and the lower portion will hang to the ground. To actually "fly" the ship, or even hold it up in any capacity, you have to hold by either the two wings, or by the fuselage. Once you realize that, it shouldn't be problematic, but it can lead to a bad experience if you aren't careful.

    Price

For $100, this set is a pretty good value. The ship is decently sized, and can hold all four members, plus you get Crosshair. It's not a steal or anything, but it's really fairly priced. This is definitely a set that you can get at full price and still not feel ripped off.

    Overall

I think this is a great set. You get all 4 members of the Batch, plus Crosshair, a really sleek looking ship, and two speeders, though the speeders are give or take for me personally. The minifigs are all of top-notch quality, even in spite of their flaws. If you're a young fan of the Bad Batch show, or you've been watching the Clone Wars since it came out on CN way back in '08, this would make for a fine addition to your collection.

The Infamous Phase 2 Captain Rex

Written by (AFOL , silver-rated reviewer) in United States,

It should be fairly obvious what the allure of this set is. Captain Rex is one of The Clone Wars' most popular characters. He has two main outfits: his Phase 1 armor, which came in many sets from 2008-2011, and his Phase 2 armor, which ONLY ever came in this set, and this set alone. Clad in his Phase 2 armor, he recently made an appearance in Season 7 of the Clone Wars last year, and is going to make even more appearances in the near future. If you want this extremely popular character in Lego form, this is the only set that you can get him in.

    Box/Instructions

The box and instructions, if I remember correctly, were pretty much standard for their day.

    Parts

I think most of the parts included are really only good for this set, as the large pieces on the speeder wouldn't really have a good use elsewhere. But considering the insane value of this set second-hand now, I see no reason to take it apart in the first place.

    Minifigures

What else is to say about the minifigs that hasn't already been said? The Captain Rex is absolutely phenomenal, even today. Which is a good thing, considering Lego has not yet made another version since this set. The commando droid and Obi-Wan are much less exciting, though still nice additions. They have been in many other sets besides this one, and so they can be obtained in those sets instead.

    The build

Both of the speeders in this set look excellent, even today. The stickers add some very nice detail, especially the small Separatist insignia and the blue stripes on the back of the droid speeder. The BARC looks accurate to what we see in the show, and is very sturdy.

    Playability

The playability of this set is legendary. Not so the set itself, but Captain Rex is a fan favorite, and has appeared many times since this set was released. Kids want a Captain Rex to go along with their Ashoka Tano, or their Bad Batch figures.

However, the set itself was very good when it first came out as well. The sidecar can rotate to its side and can even detach from the larger BARC, and the Separatist speeder is a nice touch for Rex and Obi-Wan to chase.

    Price

Now, when this set was new, I would have thought that it was a little overpriced. I specifically remember thinking that I wanted another clone trooper or at least a regular battle droid. Looking back however, the Captain Rex was THE highlight of the set, and considering the prices he's going for now, the set was an absolute steal.

    Overall

This Captain Rex figure is quickly becoming one of the most sought after Star Wars minfigures ever, because they have not released a new set with him in it to this day. And on top of that, this wasn't even a full release set; it was a Walmart exclusive. So not only did they only release one Phase 2 Captain Rex, but the set that he DID come in wasn't even widely available. There is no doubt that Lego misjudged (and continues to misjudge) the popularity of this character.

Prices on eBay are reaching $150 or more, just for this one minifigure alone, and to rub salt into the wound, he's going to make another appearance in The Bad Batch show on Disney+ in the coming weeks. I have no doubt that prices will spike on top of already extremely inflated levels, especially considering they made a Bad Batch shuttle with all the members of the Bad Batch, but no Rex. If you're a kid and want to re-enact the show, or an adult trying to assemble a full collection, this set is an absolute must-have. Assuming you can afford the astronomically inflated prices, that is.

Another Really Good Imperial Battle Pack

Written by (AFOL , silver-rated reviewer) in United States,

A lot of people didn't like this battle pack, and I can kind of see why. They included two officers, which some people were pretty vocal about. I really like the new officers/crew members though, since almost always they are included in really expensive sets, such as the UCS Super Star Destroyer, the play-scale Star Destroyers, some of the bigger shuttles and ships, and more. This battle pack is a great way to get a bunch of them for use in an Imperial lineup like when Emperor Palpatine arrived at the Death Star in Episode 6. They just look really good in that classic Imperial Officer outfit. The Death Star Trooper is pretty cool too, and it's awesome to get that new mould for the helmet in a cheap set.

    Box/Instructions

The box and instructions were pretty small, though not any smaller or bigger than the standard box for a battle pack.

    Parts

This set has some really neat parts, most notably the printed round 1x1 tiles with the Imperial insignia. It does have stud shooters — arrrrgh! — but they can easily be swapped out for the standard blasters if you don't like them.

    Minifigures

This set includes 2 Patrol Troopers, 1 Imperial Officer, and 1 Imperial Navy Trooper.

The Patrol Troopers are the highlight of this set in my eyes, though the other two minifigs are quite good as well. They just look fantastic, especially with that crisp printing and the contrast of white and black on the helmets. They almost look dual-moulded (even though they're not).

The Imperial Officer is another great fig. Not as good as the Patrol Troopers, of course, but still really nice to get in such a cheap set. Yes, it is an officer in a battle pack, but he actually looks pretty good! Not the most detailed printing out there, but the face is nice and so is the new-ish mould for the hat. There were a TON of officers in the Imperial Army and Navy, so it's always nice to get more for cheap.

The Imperial Navy Trooper is really nice to get too. The new helmet only comes in the Death Star if I remember correctly, which is a $500 set.

    The build

The build was pretty simple and short, but nothing beats the classic satisfaction of putting together 4 brand new figs straight from a new battle pack!

    Playability

Playability is very good for what it costs. It has 6 stud-shooters in total. The only issue I can potentially see is that the speeder can only seat 1 minifig at a time, but that's an extremely minor complaint given how good the speeder actually is.

    Price

The price is very good, as is the case with most battle packs. $15 for 4 wonderful figures and a surprisingly decent speeder is a great value.

    The completed model

The speeder is such a sleek looking design, even though it may not be 100% accurate to the film. It's still accurate enough that it would look good as part of a display, which can not be said for the vast majority of battle pack builds. If you don't like the stud shooters on it, they can be very easily removed. The minifigures look awesome on display. The Empire had a great deal of variation when it came to their soldiers; not all were Stormtroopers, after all. It's just a great battle pack that got far too much hate in my opinion than what it deserved.

Wonderful Way to Celebrate 10 Years of Modulars

Written by (TFOL , silver-rated reviewer) in United States,

10255 Assembly Square is simply a fantastic set. While it does have a few downsides, it is one of the best modulars so far.

    Box/Instructions

The box is MASSIVE. It could barely fit in the Lego Store's largest bag! On the front it has the set picture with a shining sun in the background. It is a Creator Expert set, as evidenced by the Creator and Expert logos on the box.

Inside, it has bags 4, 5, and 6 inside the box, while 1, 2, and 3 are inside a smaller box inside the box.

The instructions are not ringed like the Death Star's, but are fairly normal, just very, very thick. I would much rather have a ring-bound book but it is not too big of a problem.

    Parts

This set comes with a HUGE collection of rare parts and colors. Two of the most obvious ones are the sand green and sand blue pieces. But there are also many other rare colors and pieces; for instance, a piece that is a real mirror!

    Minifigures

The eight minifigures are simple but very nice. They all have the plain smiley face head, which cannot be found in any other set now besides modulars and perhaps a few Creator sets. Included are a ballet dancer, a musician, a dentist, a baker, a barista, a mom, a photographer and a florist. A minifig baby is also included.

    The build

The build of this set was one of the longest builds I've ever preformed. It took me eight hours divided across three parts. There were a few mistakes I made while building that tested my resolve, however those were few and far between.

    The completed model

Words cannot describe how detailed this set is. You really do have to see it to believe it. The bakery is one of my favorite parts of the set. All of the cakes and pastries inside look delicious!

    Overall

However, one of the main downsides of this set is the price. It should be around $230-$250, not $280. But the high price is nulled by the sheer beauty of this set! $280 may be a bitter pill to swallow at first, but that feeling soon goes away when you start building it. I would recommend it for any Lego fan, but this set really shines in a Modular setup. This might just be my new favorite set!

One of the Best Police Stations so Far

Written by (TFOL , silver-rated reviewer) in United States,

I bought two of these in order to make a modular modern police station. This set is one of the best sets for making one, as there are plenty of blue and white wall pieces, and plenty of windows. Today I'll be reviewing one set, and seeing how it stands up in comparison to other police stations.

    Box/Instructions

The box is pretty big, and there are ten bags inside. There are six instruction manuals; I would have preferred one or two big ones, but six is okay too, as it makes it easier for younger kids. Not all Lego fans are AFOL's anyway!

    Parts

The parts included are perfect for building a modular police station, unlike the Prison Island set, which has mostly rock pieces. Also included are the ball-and-chain parts and a fire engine ladder in LBG, both of which are pretty cool.

    Minifigures

The minifigs are great. I would have liked a few more police officers, however. While the other two officers are in their vehicles, those two officers are supposed to watch the inmates, work in the office, take care of the dog, take care of the cars, and prevent other criminals from breaking out their buddies! No wonder why the crooks are always escaping!

    The build

The build was pretty long; it took me two hours and thirty minutes. Most of the time was spent building and not looking for parts, thanks to the separate bags and instructions.

    The completed model

When finished, it looks great! It doesn't look that good from the back, but it is a City police station after all, and most people won't be viewing it from the back.

    Overall Opinion

This police station is really, really, good. It's much better than the Prison Island set, in my opinion. It is a perfect set for building police station modulars, especially corner ones. It has a fair assortment of minifigs, but they should have included more for the price point. For some reason, the price seems off. I don't really know why, but the set seems a little bit pricey. Maybe it's the small amount of minifigs for $100, maybe it's the lack of a proper baseplate, I don't know. It just seems off. Luckily I got mine for $70 each, and I feel that's a fair price. If you find this set for under $90 or so, I would definitely recommend it.
