Go Brick Me: One of the best sets I've ever bought

Written by (AFOL) in South Africa,

When I saw this set for the first time, and discovered that the price was a mere $29,99 -or, in South Africa, where I live, R650- I was shocked. I was shocked in a good way, because for 708 pieces that's an incredible price. I wasn't a massive fan of the BrickHeadz theme then, but I now am, and this set was a must-have. The set allows you to build 2 full BrickHeadz. The pieces provided for hair options are yellow, black, reddish brown, and orange. My single complaint with this set is that I feel that grey and white pieces should've been included should you want to make your grandparents, parents, etc. In terms of the body, a variety of colours are provided, but if you want to make two BrickHeadz with the same body colour you'll find it difficult without dipping into other pieces from your collection. As far as accessories go I feel like a few more could've been added. The skin colour pieces are great as they give enough pieces to make 2 full characters of each skin tone.

The instruction manual is pretty large, and it gives clear guidance on a good range of designs. On top of some suggestions for how to make hair, pieces are provided if you want to make a hat, or cap. You can also make a red skirt, and the inclusion of 2 styles of glasses/spectacles is awesome, especially for me as I've worn glasses since I was 6.

Possibly the best part about this set is that it's a great set for the pieces alone. You can make two BrickHeadz, and then use the 400-500 extra pieces for whatever you want. The value of this is probably the best I've ever seen on a LEGO set released after 2015, and I'd say that it makes the list of my 10 favourite sets I own. At the end of day, you really can't go wrong by buying this. An excellent concept, and excellently executed. If I were to rate it, I'd give it 95/100

Resistance Y-Wing Microfighter. A good-looking build, with some faults

Written by (AFOL) in South Africa,

When I watched Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, I wasn't pleased with the film, but I quite liked the set selection for the film. Sets I particularly liked were the Microfighters that accompanied the film. Both offer prominent characters with nice builds, but for today I'm just looking at the Resistance Y-Wing that Zorii Bliss flies.

    The Build

This Y-wing is in my mind one of the better Microfighters released in the past couple of years, at least in terms of detail. The design manages to look quite realistic while using pretty common pieces. The wings look pretty good, and help bring some texture into the build. The cockpit is quite well-designed, with some clever part uses to create the cannon. The rest of the ship looks good, again featuring some nice texture and part uses to give this thing some life. Aside from that, there's not really much to say about the build. This Y-wing comes with flick missile projectiles, which are my personal least-favourite shooting function. While I understand that the nature of Microfighters is quite blocky, I feel that this design is just a touch too heavy, and it just doesn't complement the style of the vehicle. That being said, it would be very difficult to make it lighter due to the already-low number of pieces, and this complaint of mine is just to provide some balance. Overall, it's a good design, with some nice detail. I think that it's faults are minimal, and 8.5/10 is a fair score.

    The Minifigure

I'm not gonna lie, I don't like Zorii Bliss at all. But I'm here to discuss the Minifig, not the in-universe character, and I must say that this design is pretty top-notch. The torso and leg printing is good, and really captures the look of the character. There's no side printing but honestly I think she looks interesting enough without it. Her helmet looks good, and the quality of it is pretty high. Underneath, her face is just a black Minifig head, presumably because LEGO didn't want to reveal her identity before it was known to the public. Honestly I think it was unnecessary as her character was pretty minor, and she's clearly female, so what harm would it have done to give her a normal face? I do acknowledge that little is seen of her face in the film, so maybe it was also due to that. She wields twin pistols, which both look good. Perhaps a little large compared to those wielded in the film, but they look nice. Again, I aim to nit-pick a little just to show that there are some minor faults to bring some balance to my opinion. I dislike the character, but LEGO did a great job with this Minifigure. I feel that 8.5/10 is again a fair score.

    Value

So, this set is the same price as all single Microfighters. In South Africa I paid a little extra, coming to $11.8, but it's barely a difference, so I don't mind. The set has 86 pieces, which is quite a small number, however it does come with a pretty high quality Minifig, who is currently only available in the much more expensive full-sized Resistance Y-Wing. I believe that 9/10 meets the case here.

    Overall thoughts

In conclusion, it's a good design, with a good Minifig, which I suppose might be desirable for some people. The set isn't perfect, but for a Microfighter it's pretty darn good. There are few things to complain about, and at $10 it won't be a waste to buy. My score comes to a total of 86/100, which I think is fair.

T-16 Skyhopper vs Bantha Microfighters: Good Minifigs, better builds.

Written by (AFOL) in South Africa,

When I saw this set for the first time, I decided I had to get it to go with my sister's Dewback vs Droid transport Microfighter combo. And so far I must say that this is my favourite of the combo Microfighter series. We've never got a LEGO Bantha before, so it's interesting to see how the first attempt came out. Anyway, let's get into the review.

    The Build

I think we can all agree that the main feature of Microfighters is the build, although some sets do come with great Minifigures. I'll start with the T-16 Skyhopper build, as I like it the least. The build is decent. The problem is that the centre of the build is quite bulky, and makes the wings look shorter than they should. It's by no means the most elegant or good-looking Microfighter, but I do appreciate that LEGO gave us a more obscure vehicle. Overall it's one of my less-favourite builds in the line, but not bad. I'd say 7/10 is fair.

The Bantha, on the other hand, is an interesting build, and goes really well with the Dewback released the year before. It makes for a cute creature, and the texturing of its fur is very well done. A saddle is provided for the Tusken Raider, with a clip to attach his Gaffi stick. My only complaint about the Bantha is that the horns stick out too far. I know that they have curled horns, but extending them fails to capture that in my opinion. It would've been better to simply attach the pieces to 1-2 studs with holes. In the end, it's definitely in my top 5 Microfighters of all time and I believe that 9/10 is an accurate score. The two combine for a score of 8/10.

    The Minifigures

The Minifigs in this set are pretty good, but not great. Both are well executed, but the T-16 Skyhopper Pilot is simply not very interesting. He has a detailed torso print, and a dual-sided head. Accompanying that is his grey pilot's helmet, with printed details. His legs have no printing, which is a little disappointing as I think it would've been nice to see something new.

The Tusken Raider is the same as seen before. A good level of detail on the torso and legs, and of course the same head design we've seen before. This figure can't really get better, but the part that brings my Minifig score down to 8.5/10 is the T-16 Pilot, as I feel he's just lacking somewhat.

    Value

The value of this set is quite good, at $20. In South Africa I bought it for $22, so the difference is small and I can't really complain. If the price were just a couple dollars cheaper, I'd say the price is perfect, but really no major complaints here. I feel that 8.5/10 is fair.

    Overall

At the end of the day, I like this set. It's one of those small, fun builds, and the Bantha really is a highlight. It's a perfect small gift for Christmas, or even just as a stocking filler. Again, my only complaints are that the Skyhopper seems a bit awkward, the Pilot could use some extra detail, and the horns of the Bantha are a bit wide. My overall score comes to just over 83/100. A good buy, that would be perfect if a few small changes were made, and if the price were slightly less.

The Justice League Anniversary Party: Great Minifigures, Decent build

Written by (AFOL) in South Africa,

This set is very much different from what we've seen from other sets in The LEGO Batman Movie line. This set is very much Minifig focused, and is a very scene-specific set, with no villains. The 4 Minifigs are: Superman, Green Arrow, Hakwgirl, and lastly, a hero I'd never heard of prior to buying this set, El Dorado. I like how they chose some Minifigs that are deliberately rather obscure characters. It lends well to the idea of The Justice League Anniversary Party being this huge get-together that Batman was obviously not invited to. He's not a minifigure, but the colourful Wonder Dog is also included. He appears to be a blue German Shepherd, with a green cape. He makes for a rather cute character, and for me he just rounds off the whole minifigure selection well. Superman, El Dorado, and Hawkgirl all feature dual-sided heads, with some happy expressions, and some more embarrassed faces, for when Batman founds out he wasn't invited to the party. I'd give the Minifigs a nice 9.5/10

As for the build, there's not a great deal to talk about. The centre build is fun to build, and accommodates both human and canine DJs nicely, which is a clever detail. The main play feature is a rotating function for what is meant to be the centre dance-floor. The feature works well, and can hold several minifigures if positioned well. Aside from that, there's not really much to the build, aside from the party lights and speakers, along with the banner. My one complaint about the build is that it feels like it's a bit wide, and if it were able to fold in I would be completely happy. I think 7/10 meets the case here.

Lastly, the value is not the best. Well, it's a slightly complicated problem for me. In South Africa where I live, I paid R620 ZAR, which is almost exactly $40, which is $10 more than the US price. So, I'd say that the value in the US is perfect, but it was a little steep for me. Keep in mind that the bulk of value in this set comes from the exclusive minifigures, and not really the build. For value, 7/10 is my score, but if I had bought the set in the US, I'd award 8/10.

Overall, it's a really fun set, which makes my shelf look alive and enjoyable. The Minifigs are super, the build is decent, and the price is OK. My overall calculation is that this set earns 82/100, which I think is a good evaluation of this sets merits, and its faults.

Ocean Exploration Submarine-A good, but not perfect return to the underwater sub-theme

Written by (AFOL) in South Africa,

When I started collecting LEGO with my sisters 13 years ago, we exclusively collected City sets. We then branched off, and since 2012 I haven't collected a single City set larger than a Polybag. So, this review is a way of judging how good the set is in itself, and also, for me, to see how far the theme has come in 8 years. Anyway, enough backstory, time to get into the set.

Firstly, the Minifigs. The set comes with 2 Deep Sea Divers, one "Explorer" and 1 named character, Jessica Sharpe, who I believe is featured in the LEGO City Adventures show. The quality of prints is quite high, with 4 different facial expressions, and the torsos all have detailed printing. There isn't any side printing but I don't think it's necessary for this set. 3 of the 4 Minifigs have leg printing, and it's fascinating to me to see how detailed City Minifigures now are. The two Divers have dual facial expressions, showing both happy, and rather scared expressions, . As far as I'm aware, only one of the 4 heads is new, but there's enough variation across the Minifigs to make them feel unique.

Now, onto the builds. The rock face is of a nice size, and looks pleasant with some nice colours, and those rather new plant pieces. Probably the main draw to this build is the play feature, which is very simple. The angler fish simply sits in the crevice in the rock, and can be pushed out using a large, clear Technic beam. It's a fun feature, but to me it makes it a bit hard to display on a shelf without pushing the fish outwards, which looks a bit weird. The Submarine is a simple build, but works well. The level of detail is good, and my main complaint is that it's open at the back. I know it'd be difficult to correct that for the size, but it's something that slightly bothers me. The feature of the 2 claws works well, and there's no worry of the rubber bands snapping. The top needs to be removed to place the driver in the cockpit. The only other problem for me is that the other driver just sits in the back, and moves around a bit during play, with no studs to hold him in place. A small vehicle is included, which can easily clip onto the main submarine, and this is what prevents the rear-driver from falling over.

Lastly, two red crabs are included, and the Anglerfish is glow-in-the-dark. It's power is surprisingly powerful, and lasts much longer than anticipated. I remember going to bed last night, and seeing it glowing brightly somewhere on the shelf, despite not being exposed to much light.

Overall, this is a good set. An easy, but fun build, with great Minifigures. The builds are not without fault, but do well for what they're meant to be. The colour scheme is also nice and fresh, with some bright classic colours, and some more subtle, interesting colours. Although the set in itself would score 8/10 for me, the value is a problem. In my country, South Africa, the set's price is equivalent to $33.85, which is a little more expensive than I think it should be. If the set were $30, I'd say the price is perfect, however, seeing that the US price is $39.99 is disappointing. It's a great set, but if I were in the US, I wouldn't fork over nearly $40 dollars to get it. I thought I'd mention that I received this set for free from LEGO South Africa, but I wanted to give a fair and honest view on the price, which I think is far too expensive in the US, but seems to be good in most other parts of the world. I'd say that the "American Score" would be 6/10, whereas my verdict based on the more reasonable prices found elsewhere would be 7-8/10.
