Where We're Going, We Don't Need Roads

Written by (TFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in United States,

LEGO set #71201 Back to the Future Level Pack is one of the best sets in the LEGO Dimensions theme. At a $30 retail in the year 2015 with only 94 pieces, it may seem extremely overpriced. However, both physically and in the Dimensions game, it is well worth the price. I recently purchased this set off of a Bricklink seller. Not only was it my first Bricklink order, it was also the first retired set I purchased. I have to say it is the best set LEGO Dimensions had to offer.
The set only includes one minifigure, Marty McFly. He is a re - iteration of the character also available in the Ideas DeLorean Time Machine. He has a perfect face, with content and frightened expressions, with a rather standard but well - fitting hair piece. His iconic life vest is printed on his torso, and he has un - printed blue pants. He also includes a guitar element, and can be placed on the included Dimensions toy tag element.
Other builds in this set include the DeLorean Time Machine and Hoverboard. The micro - scale DeLorean is well - built, using smaller but versatile pieces as most Dimensions builds need to in order for it to be converted into three separate models. The main build even allows for the doors to be opened, which I think is a nice touch. It can be converted into Electric and Flying versions of the model using in - game instructions. The Electric car is built well enough with the pieces provided, and the flying build is an excellent inclusion. The Hoverboard build contains an exclusive Hoverboard element, one of the main reasons many fans bought this set. It is built on a rather wacky model, so it can be converted into two other builds. The Hoverboard element is well - built, and allows for a minifigure to stand on it or carry it.
In the game, the character and build unlock numerous bits of content, including a level, adventure world, and different abilities. Since it is called a Level Pack, it was necessary for it to include a level associated with its theme. Since it is a Back to the Future set, the level re - creates main points of the first BTTF film. It begins in Doc Brown's warehouse, where you play as Marty to test the guitar amplifier. After this short scene, it proceeds through the film, travelling back to 1955 using the Time - Travelling ability included with the DeLorean. Although it strays from the plot, making Marty time - travel by choice to warn Doc Brown of the attack, and the level is relatively short, it still captures the film well. The set also unlocks an adventure world, where you can travel through time in Hill Valley to complete restorations, quests, races, and other different challenges. It also includes ways to influence the future by doing things like planting flowers or digging in certain areas that appear in the future.
The Marty McFly character in the game can do various things, such as destroy sonar panels with his guitar. He also says various recorded phrases that correspond with events around him. The Hoverboard build can jump, fly, destroy silver objects, and can even be customized to look different or play sounds. It even stops while hovering over water! The DeLorean build can use time - travel, acceleration switches, electricity, docking ports, and other in - game powers.
Overall, this set was a great addition to my rather small LEGO Dimensions collection. Including three electronically interactive builds, along with the exclusive printed Hoverboard piece, this set is great for any Back to the Future fan or LEGO Dimensions collector.

Doesn't Need to be a Battle Pack

Written by (TFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in United States,

LEGO set number 75280, 501st Legion Clone Troopers, is a $30 army - building set with 285 pieces, six figures, and two main builds. When this set was released, I welcomed it with open arms. Unlike battle packs, this set is $30, but is well worth it, considering its potential as a playset and, as it is more likely to be used, when bought in multiples, an army - builder.

501st Legion Clone Troopers contains six figures, four of which are 501st Legion trooper minifigures. The standard 501st trooper included in this set is outstanding. It has printings on both feet, along with a white belt or "thigh" piece, which has normally been found in black on clone troopers. The updated printing on the torso and legs looks great on these troopers. The helmet has a printing on the cheeks creating a shadow effect, along with blue marking, which continue on the torso. The heads used in all of the clones are the newer clone face, matching the live - action clones more than the ones seen in The Clone Wars. The 501st Jet Trooper has the same legs and head as the other troopers, but has a different torso printing, which revolves to the back, although the back of the torso element is not visible under the blue jetpack element. The helmet on this minifigure is similar to the others, except the cheek shadows are blue, and there are red markings as well. The blue on his helmet is different from that of the other three. Two standard clones, along with the jet trooper, have standard blasters. A fourth weapon included is a blaster rifle extended by a black candle element. The final figures included are B-1 Battle Droids, which have a slightly changed foot element, although the only difference I see is very small. They also carry blaster elements.

The first of the two vehicles in this set is a BARC speeder, which is longer than a LEGO BARC speeder normally appears. It is very sleek, and cleverly uses a snowshoe element, which has been seen in previous renditions of the vehicle. It has few stickers compared to the AT-RT also included in the set. The side - mounted stud shooters on the front are understandable as a play feature. There is perfect space for a clone trooper to drive the speeder, and the handlebars are very maneuverable. There are blasters mounted on the sides as cannons, and there is ventilation underneath. Overall, the BARC speeder is phenomenal.

The AT-RT model is the second and final vehicle in the set. It is built on a sturdy base, which the legs branch off of. The leg hinge elements contain stickers that were tedious to apply, but they end up looking wonderful. The feet at the bottom of the model are built well, but have a small range of motion. The cockpit of the walker has space for a minifigure, and use a clever stacking and locking technique that allows the minifigure to be detached without interfering with the handlebars. The antennae at the rear of the build look great, and there are clips at the back to attach accessories. The stud shooter at the front could have been mounted to a longer barrel, as seen in the 20th Anniversary Clone Scout Walker, but with that aside, the AT-RT model also appears amazing.

Overall, 501st Legion Clone Troopers is an amazing set, and one which I will be purchasing several copies of. I definitely recommend this set to Star Wars fans of all ages, for having playability, displayability, and, its most likely use, army - building ability.

Clone Turbo Tank Microfighter: Perfect For Playability

Written by (TFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in United States,

LEGO set number 75028, the Clone Turbo Tank Microfighter, is a 96-piece set that originally cost US $9.99. At its small size, its playability is perfect for fans and collectors alike.

Since this set is small, this review is not going to be too in-depth. The set includes only one minifigure, a Phase 2 Clone Trooper. He has sleek, white armour with coordinating printings on the torso and legs. He also has a blaster element as an accessory.

The microfighter is a very simple build. Released in 2014, it does not have side-mounted stud shooters. Instead, it has two flick missiles with transparent blue cones. The model is one of the few Star Wars vehicles with visible wheels; it includes ten wheels connected to it by tan limited-friction axle/pegs. Above the wheels, there is a small 2x2 cockpit with room for the Clone Trooper minifigure. The cockpit has two brown transparent cheese wedge elements to simulate a window. Finally, there is a light stone gray antenna element at the back of the model, representing a turret.

In the wave this set was released in, the counterpart to this model was the AAT Microfighter, although, unlike modern Microfighters, it did not display a transparent version of it on the back of the box. Overall, this is a great set from the first Microfighters wave.

    Battle Droid Army For One!

Written by (TFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in United States,

LEGO set 75086, Battle Droid Troop Carrier, is a very interactive set with many functions and minifigures (if 14 Battle Droids count as minifigures). At $40, this set is extremely underpriced, compared to its piece count of 565 elements.

This set includes 15 minifigures, including a Gungan Warrior, 12 Battle Droids, and 2 Battle Droid pilots. The Gungan Warrior has two accessories, a staff and a shield. This minifigure also includes a head piece that is specially printed for this set, although the mould has been included in other sets, such as the AAT and the Flash Speeder. The Battle Droid minifigures are as we always see them. They use the typical Battle Droid pieces, with one arm facing forward and the other sideways. Each Battle Droid has a blaster element as an accessory. Finally, there are two Battle Droid pilots, each with blue torso printings and sideways-facing arms.

This set also includes a transporter vehicle, with standing points for all 14 Battle Droid figures. In the front section, there are two points for the Battle Droid pilots to stand on. This section can be detached from the model as a smaller vehicle. On the base of this section, there are circular transparent 2x2 plates with smooth, curved bases to create a sliding or hovering effect. The main vehicle continues the use of these, but also includes transparent Technic wheel elements to further emphasize the hovering ability of the vehicle. In this section, there are two small, detachable platforms with six points for Battle Droids to be attached to. When in motion, the Battle Droids can be connected to the vehicle. When in battle, they can be slid off and detached. In this section, there is also a stand for all 12 blasters to be placed on. At the top, there is a lever. When switched, it will launch the blasters off to be given to the droids.

Overall, this is an amazing set, and is amazing for army building, as it includes 14 Battle Droids. This set has amazing playability, a great value, and loads of functions that children and adults alike will love.

    It Feels Like Only Yesterday

Written by (TFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in United States,

The LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack was released with the theme in 2015 at the price of $99.99. I purchased it two years later, when Dimensions was becoming less popular, and every product was being sold for about half price, along with two additional sets, one team pack and one level pack. This set was revolutionary for its time, as it was the first LEGO game with a purchasable character grid. All you had to do was place your desired character onto the toy pad, and he or she (or it) would appear on screen.

The minifigure selection is great for this set. With Gandalf, Batman, and Wyldstyle, you have every character necessary to complete the story mode of the game. Each minifigure was the newest rendition, with the newer face on Wyldstyle, and the grey Batman costume. Each minifigure came on a blue circular stand with two studs on the top. Each stand has a special printing for the character on top and special code on the bottom that the toy pad recognized as the character. Along with the minifigures, there is a micro-scale Batmobile that the minifigures can drive in-game.

The gateway itself is stunning to look at. It has a beautiful colour scheme, with the transparent blue and navy blue contrasting nicely. It connects at two points to the toy pad itself, with a hole in the centre to fit a minifigure, vehicle, or gadget. On the portal portion of the gateway, there are five points to connect the keystones when you “discover” them in-game. When not in use, they can be stored at the back. I love the addition of the baseplate especially designed for the theme, seen in story packs for completely different levels, such as the Fantastic Beasts and Ghostbusters 2016 stories.

On the toy pad, there are seven spaces to place a minifigure, vehicle, or gadget. The minifigures included in the set, along with the Batmobile, can fit on the toy pad at the same time. When the game is in action, the spaces glow and make sound effects when you are activating the keystones or using special powers with the characters. I happened to buy the Harry Potter Team Pack and Ghostbusters Level Pack to go along with the set and activate levels and other parts of the story. In the game, if you do not have a certain minifigure or gadget, you can use the “hire a hero” function, where you use studs to activate another character from the game. This is only if you want to activate things outside the story.

I was very sad when the game closed and sets stopped being produced. It felt like the game was incomplete. Soon after, the price of the sets was just over half of the original price. The stores were being restocked, replacing LEGO Dimensions with newer games and consoles. Not much later, the game itself began glitching. I could not play the game for fifteen minutes before it paused and deactivated. Still, the experience I had when I had it was wonderful, and I would not replace it with anything else.
