Review: 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama

Posted by ,

Advent Calendars have provided an opportunity to acquire seasonal Star Wars minifigures since 2011. The festive Star Wars range expands this year to include the unusual 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama, taking inspiration from the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special.

While the minifigures are obviously inviting, the seasonal Millennium Falcon diorama appears interesting as well. This model captures details usually missing from LEGO renditions of the iconic YT-1300 freighter and I think the colourful Christmas decorations look lovely.

Summary

40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama, 282 pieces.
£25.99 / $29.99 / €29.99 | 9.2p/10.6c/10.6c per piece.

While decidedly quirky, the Millennium Falcon diorama and its minifigures are superb

  • Great selection of characters
  • Highly detailed diorama
  • Attractive decorations
  • Rey's lightsaber should be yellow
  • Festive jumpers are arguably too similar to those in Advent Calendars

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Minifigures

The last few Star Wars Advent Calendars have contained minifigures wearing festive jumpers and another pair are available here. Rey features an exclusive Millennium Falcon design, with the same knitted style as earlier minifigures. I like this element and Rey's dark brown hair looks splendid too, accurately styled and coupled with her standard double-sided head.

Finn includes a blue jumper, decorated with the Resistance symbol alongside a few snowflakes on the front and back. Again, this design looks superb, but C-3PO is similarly dressed in 75340 Star Wars Advent Calendar and the repeated colour is unfortunate, as these minifigures would otherwise suit being displayed together, given their shared festive theme.

The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special explores Rey's early training of Finn, so both minifigures include lightsabers. The trans-neon green colour of Rey's lightsaber has attracted criticism and rightly so because it should be yellow. The necessary 4L bar has appeared in this colour before, albeit not very recently, so the use of a trans-neon green blade is very disappointing.

However, the darker hilt on her lightsaber is appropriate and Rey's second accessory is much more appealing. This book is inspired by the ancient texts recovered from Ahch-To during The Last Jedi, so displays the classic Jedi emblem in metallic gold on the cover. Sadly, the tan 1x2 tile inside is blank, but the printed cover alone is welcome.

BB-8 is included as well, comprising his usual spherical body and dome-shaped head. These components are accurately decorated with metallic silver and orange panels and the circular details around the body are especially impressive, as each section is unique. Moreover, the black photoreceptor looks perfect, featuring a red streak to denote a reflection.

The infamous Star Wars Holiday Special focuses on Chewbacca and his family, so his major role in the animated LEGO Star Wars special was assured. This minifigure has now remained the same for nearly a decade, introduced in 75042 Droid Gunship and featuring an appropriate combination of dark brown and medium nougat hair.

I like this colour scheme and the metallic silver highlights across Chewie's bandoleer look nice. Additionally, the eyes, nose and teeth are accurately printed, while the head and torso include excellent texture too. This minifigure lacks his bowcaster, which is perhaps unsurprising given the peaceful nature of the diorama, but I would still have liked the accessory.

A pesky Porg completes the character selection. These birds, native to Ahch-To, last appeared in 75279 Star Wars Advent Calendar three years ago and I am happy to see another available here. Completely brick-built designs are not ideal for all animals, but this porg's chubby shape and the printed feathers on its head work beautifully.

The Completed Model

Other than the cockpit, the Millennium Falcon's main hold is undoubtedly its most recognisable interior feature and one portrayed in LEGO many times. However, this version includes details excluded from others because the diorama format is more spacious, hence the addition of the wall bunk behind the seating area, for example.

This model is further distinguished from others by the Life Day decorations, including a whole turkey and a carrot on the table in the centre. The red and white tablecloth looks splendid and originates directly from the Holiday Special, displaying exactly the same pattern. Moreover, the textured floor looks good and the table is easily removable, as are all the seasonal additions.

Christmas trees have been produced in countless sets and involve equally varied construction methods. This flat design is unusual and would look bizarre in a more realistic setting, but I like the space-saving solution aboard the Millennium Falcon. Perhaps this is an unknown species of tree within the Star Wars galaxy. Also, the ornaments are attractive, notably including the trans-light blue snowflake on top.

Crew bunks are found throughout the Millennium Falcon, recessed into the walls. One is thus located behind the curved seats and features accurate tan upholstery. The band of dark bluish grey elements around the bunk looks great, while the curvature of the seat corresponds with the source material. However, I would have preferred a printed dejarik table over this tiled version.

Another trans-light blue snowflake is placed on the back wall, beside the entrance to the main hold. The circular passageways aboard the Millennium Falcon are instantly recognisable and this recreation closely resembles those in 75192 Millennium Falcon, fixing the upper section upside down in exactly the same way. The holes on the back of the headlight bricks are a little awkward though and could have been hidden.

The model is obviously not designed to be displayed from behind, although there are no odd colours visible. The sand blue accents are effective, complementing the usual shades of grey, while the back also provides easy access to place a minifigure in the bunk. Furthermore, there are clips for the supplied lightsabers underneath, efficiently using all available space.

Overall

40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama is an unexpected addition to the LEGO Star Wars range this year, but is a lot of fun. The minifigures are appealing and I think it is important that the essential Sequel Trilogy characters remain available, even if the films are not as popular as others in the Star Wars saga. Rey's lightsaber being the wrong colour is perplexing though.

The diorama is remarkably detailed too, taking a unique approach to a location depicted a few times already. I like the Christmas decorations, but these can also be removed to leave a great Millennium Falcon diorama, where you could display other minifigures. Furthermore, the price of £25.99, $29.99 or €29.99 feels reasonable to me, with five characters included.

It certainly is a set that you can buy.

It's not amazing, but I might pick it up cheaper for the figs.

I'll aim to pick this up. It's fun and therefore a bit different to the usual tat that we put up over Christmas.

If this set marks the glorious return of Trans-Neon Green (and it probably doesn't), then all of us have cause for celebration.

Yeah, I know you want your yellow bars. I don't begrudge you that, but at least your favourite colour didn't go extinct (unless it did, and I'm sorry for your loss).

My favorite translucent color already died, but at least if neon green is retiring we get the newer milky lightsaber blade in that color before it goes.

Does it fit in one of the removable sections of 75192...if it does, that may make it a bit more tempting

Not a fan of the base or the bare walls. I wish they thought those through more.

Is it just me, or is the printing on the porg face kind of… awful? It would also have been nice to see this set without the seasonal decorations, for the sake of comparison.

By in United States,

Weird set that feels like it's a few years past its intended release date. Here I was thinking we'd barely be receiving any ST merchandise until 15-20 years in the future when suddenly there's the wave of nostalgia for THAT trilogy, along with hordes of people defending them as not even "not that bad" but actually GOOD.

Seems farfetched to some, but when the PT came out I didn't think there'd be ANYONE defending those films in the future. Now I regularly see some people say they prefer the PT to the OT, which just boggles my mind.

So yeah. Buy this unwanted set now, hold onto it for 20 years, flip it for thousands of dollars in profit. There are no flaws or downsides to this plan at all.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

the fact that you "can buy a correct lightsaber blade anyway for $1" is no excuse lol, why should anyone have to get additional stuff on the secondary market to get a completely accurate set? How is it possible to have zero standards and defend this megacorp which has been steadily increasing prices and decreasing the product quality (just look at the Porg print or any white print on another color of brick).

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't believe any LEGO Star Wars collector who says they're not buying this

At thirty bucks, with a limited release window, holiday theme, I sense the FOMO is strong with this one

Especially since this is likely to sell for many times more within a couple of years on the secondary market

Every Lego lightsaber blade ever made is the wrong color. Because they're transparent.

Watch the movies or TV shows: lightsaber blades are always opaque. You can't see through them.

You're welcome. :-D

All I can think of when I see this Millennium Falcon set is: Where is Han Solo?
Oh yes, his son ran a blade through him...
And then Chewbacca wasn't hugged and now he has to spend holidays with second-rate characters, abandoned from his close friends, who are all dead now anyways.
Happy Holidays! ;-)

Not gonna lie, it's kinda nice to see the Sequels get a bit more representation in LEGO. I know the Fandom Menace pretty much hates the ST (I do too, with the exception of The Force Awakens), but there are still some things we have yet to see - especially from The Rise of Skywalker (where's my TIE Whisper and Death Star ruins duel?!)

I am still mad that Rey Skywalker's* lightsaber is the wrong color though. But you can still get a yellow lightsaber blade for around a dollar on Bricklink, so it isn't unsolvable.

*Yes, I call her that. Fight me."

Why would I "fight" you on that? Wasn't that pretty much the last spoken line ("Rey Skywalker") in Ep IX?

On the other hand, if you’re one of the world’s most popular toy companies making merchandise for one of the world’s most popular franchises, maybe you can get minor details like the main character’s iconic weapon right in what’s always been marketed as a premium product. Especially when the specific element has already appeared in a set.

Gravatar

Honestly, I kind of like this little set? For $30 it's reasonably priced, and I like that you can take down all of the holiday decorations if you want and just display it as the Falcon's main hold.

Plus, I don't seem to remember the interior really changing for the sequel trilogy--so if you want to display it with your OT figures it will still look perfectly natural.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I find it kinda sad that the Sequels have been relegated to just tie-in merchendise specials around Christmas. While the specials are cute, I'd still prefer if this set had the OT gang at the end of the day. The sequels are something that just remind me of how disappointed I was with them whenever they appear.

I wonder what a Mandalorian holiday set would look like. Imagine Beskar bars in gift wrap, or a foundling getting their first helmet/blaster. The Armorer as Santa with Grogu as an elf would also be pretty funny.

I've heard the term before, but it's been a good number of years. I honestly don't know why 'fairy lights' is triggering me. I'm not even sure if I like it or hate it.

Time to put StyleCounselor on the couch of self-examination-refection (usually a nice cocktail helps), and see what's going on.

Regardless, the actual object- lights- should definitely be used year-round.

What's wrong with calling them fairy lights? I would hazard to assume that most strings of multicoloured lights sold around the world are NOT used to decorate a midwinter celebration. In the context of this film & set, maybe "holiday lights" would be most accurate.

Is the lack of ST sets due to popularity or due to Disney? Disney don't really like to do merchandise for films that have been and gone (there are exceptions of course).

Those live action Disney remakes get initial merchandise and no more. Each SW film and TV series tends to get initial sets and never seen again. We've never seen more Rogue One, Solo, Obi-Wan merchandise after the original wave, whereas PT and OT continue to generate merchandise.

It seems to be why there is a never ending stream of content from Disney because they like new things to do merchandise to.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would kind of like the tunnel to be able to hook into the SDCC Millennium Falcon cockpit, even though the latter is from Solo and it's got a white exterior. A customized version in gray might make a nice companion, though. (Noting, most imaginings of the Falcon's interior have a tunnel between the cockpit and the lounge. Oh well.)

Never thought about this but your probably right. It’s rather infuriating that they would have this policy for Star Wars as well as we’ll probably never see another Zeb minifigure ever again. You would think that with all these stories being connected and with kids always becoming old enough to be exposed to more of the older content that they would realize that there is a constant demand for all of their content and not just the content that was released last week.

It's a generational thing. I'm old enough to have been extremely disappointed in the prequels when they came out to the point where they kind of killed my interest in Star Wars. But people in their 20s and early 30s grew up with them so there's a nostalgic appreciation, plus the Clone Wars redeemed or at least cemented a lot of that lore in a lot of people's eyes.

So yes in the future there will absolutely be people who grew up with the sequels and that will be what Star Wars is to them. It's unavoidable and kind of an interesting phenomenon to observe. Personally my interest in Star Wars as a whole is so casual at this point that I never got around to seeing the ninth movie and never got past the third episode of The Mandalorian.

On the other hand, I'm increasingly sensing that large media franchises have a saturation point. You can add as much as you want to a story canon, but people's brains and wallets can only tolerate so much before they have a true "core" of what's important. For Star Wars, that's really the first three films with a secondary graft of the sequels. Star Wars will *always* be about Luke in his prime. Later content is always going to take a back seat because of that. It just will.

You're correct. I think Lego's modern green lightsabers are the closest to anything that's shown onscreen. I've always thought that blue sabers should be made in Lego's regular blue instead of light blue because that's a more accurate, darker colour.

It's a lack of popularity. If the new content got one-and-done releases we never would have gotten a UCS Razor Crest. Mandalorian is popular, ergo more sets. The other shows were not popular. It's no coincidence that we got a UCS from the streaming series before we got UCS sequel anything. LEGO follows the market, and the market has been sending the message loud and clear for years: Star Wars is Episodes 1-6 and Clone Wars. Sequel lovers can stick their fingers in their eyes and cry "bigotry" all they want but that doesn't change the fact that the rest of us don't care enough to support a line of merchandise. Yes, Disney has a never ending string of content to drive new merch sales but they're not stopping any company from going back and producing something that sells, it's why X-Wings and TIE Fighters are always on shelves.

This christmas set will sell about as well as the rest of the sequel trash.

I’ve said it before, but I wish Finn’s saber was another color. Blue got more than enough prominence in the films between Obi-Wan, Luke; Anakin, Rey, Leia, Ben, and even Finn himself. And before anyone says it, that’s NOT Anakin’s lightsaber he’s got, or at least it shouldn’t be.

Okay, but in fairness, aren't the sabres themselves kind of overdone? Sure, they're cool - but, you know. The franchise is littered with the damned things. I'd make a bad joke about triple-wielding them, but then I remembered that General Grievous already one-upped me there.

At this point I'm not so sure if the Jedi and Sith are really the cool space samurai-wizards locked in prolonged combat that we perceive them as, or if they're just hosting the longest and most massive rave-party in the history of the universe.

By in United States,

Overall, this set is charming and I'm looking forward to it. Gives me some holiday inspiration.

I'm planning to extend the table by a few studs so I can add tons more Lego food parts (apples, bread, sausages, cookies, cakes, pie...) to their holiday feast. Also will be adding Poe in a Santa hat to this scene (perfect!) using the random Santa hat that came with the Summer VIP Add-On Pack. I think I will keep that hat with this set because I can't think of a better use!

It would also be a lot of fun just to swap out the Christmas decorations for a Halloween-themed Falcon interior, like spiderwebs instead of snowflakes, and to give the figs some Halloween torsos from my parts (thank you build-a-figs).

EDIT: And of course the table needs to have a carton of blue milk on it, too ;)
