Review: 75358 Tenoo Jedi Temple

Posted by ,

Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures was launched last month and follows the escapades of three Jedi younglings, during the High Republic era. 75358 Tenoo Jedi Temple takes inspiration from the animated series and has attracted particular interest because of its new minifigures.

These include a pair of the titular younglings, as well as an exclusive Yoda minifigure, all sporting colourful Jedi robes from the High Republic Era. Of course, the accompanying model prioritises play over display value because of the 4+ age recommendation, but our first LEGO recreation of a Jedi Temple could prove interesting.

Summary

75358 Tenoo Jedi Temple, 124 pieces.
£37.99 / $39.99 / €42.99 | 30.6p/32.3c/34.7c per piece.

75358 Tenoo Jedi Temple is frustratingly overpriced, despite the exceptional minifigures

  • Excellent minifigures
  • Surprisingly detailed temple
  • Very expensive
  • No Nubs!

Minifigures

Relative to his importance, Master Yoda is probably among the minifigures to have received the fewest updates since LEGO Star Wars began, so when changes are implemented, they tend to be dramatic. This minifigure undoubtedly occupies that category, including a new rubbery head in lime green, which appears much brighter than the existing sand green or olive green shades.

The large eyes correspond with Yoda's animated appearance in Young Jedi Adventures and I like the texture of his hair. The moulded wrinkles and ears also look superb. Like many Jedi of the High Republic period, Yoda wears an ornate white robe. This minifigure is accurately attired, other than the yellow trim, which should be metallic gold.

Yoda is interesting, but I have been especially looking forward to the youngling minifigures. Kai Brightstar sports robes similar to Yoda's, albeit with a belt and holder for his lightsaber around his waist. Kai's lime green gloves and orange cape reflect his animated design, while a unique hair piece has been developed for the character as well, featuring intricate texture.

Lys Solay also includes a new hair element, which appears even more elaborate than Kai's. This purple colour looks excellent and Lys' medium blue skin tone also stands out, befitting a Pantoran. The species has never appeared in minifigure form before, which only increases the appeal of this minifigure.

The lavender accents on the torso complement Lys' Pantoran features and I appreciate the substantial difference between the younglings' robes. Both minifigures include double-sided heads, which convey their personalities expertly, as Kai switches from confidence to concern, while Lys is perpetually happy. All three minifigures wield appropriate lightsabers, including Lys' purple-bladed weapon.

Kai, Lys and the conspicuously absent Nubs challenge themselves against a Training Droid in the first Young Jedi Adventures short, before matters inevitably go awry. This model of the droid is greatly simplified, but its printed head looks good and the multiple arms are reasonably faithful to the source material too. Ideally though, three lightsaber-like blades would be provided, rather than one.

The Completed Model

The young Jedi are frequently joined in their exploits by Nash Durango, an equally young pilot and owner of this red speeder bike. Like the training droid, this speeder bike is basic, but does include the essential features of its animated inspiration. The shape is accurate, especially with an elongated seating area towards the back.

Both of the provided younglings can sit comfortably here and there would be enough space for another, if two of the minifigures were standing. Moreover, a lightsaber can be attached on the back, but the absence of handlebars is disappointing, even taking the limitations of 4+ building into account. The outriggers feel fragile as well, although I like how these are correctly arranged with one stanchion above the other.

While the Jedi Temple on Coruscant is obviously the most famous, many satellite temples can be found throughout the galaxy. One example is located on the Outer Rim planet of Tenoo and this structure appears older than its Coruscanti equivalent. As expected, the model is very basic, although captures the general design of the onscreen setting, at a smaller scale.

For example, the Jedi emblem above the entrance is taken directly from the animated temple and this tiered structure is recognisable from the show as well. The foliage across the exterior looks lovely, complemented by printed panels, decorated with brickwork. I think these could be surprisingly versatile for other creations in the future, although they suit the Tenoo temple.

The model is lacking in depth, but that is an understandable feature of 4+ designs. There are still some nice furnishings, between a kitchen area, bunk beds for the younglings and clips for their lightsabers, beside a kyber crystal. A tiny tree completes the temple and originates directly from the animated series, albeit dramatically scaled down, once again.

A large courtyard is located outside the Jedi temple, where the younglings often train. I expect this archway is intended to represent those surrounding the courtyard, although perhaps these parts could be better used for the temple itself. The stacked blocks are connected via a Technic pin, so topple over easily, but I think the elements could have contributed to a better function.

Overall

4+ sets often include desirable minifigures, although few rival 75358 Tenoo Jedi Temple in that regard! Kai Brightstar and Lys Solay are fantastic minifigures and Master Yoda has exceeded my expectations too, as his head is brilliantly detailed. Even for those not interested in Young Jedi Adventures, the High Republic robes are potentially appealing.

The speeder bike and Jedi temple are clearly of lesser interest to older LEGO Star Wars fans. However, I am impressed by the attention given to recreating features of the onscreen temple, rather than developing a more generic Jedi building. Unfortunately, the price of £37.99, $39.99 or €42.99 feels extremely expensive. Even so, I would welcome another Young Jedi Adventures set in the future, hopefully containing Nubs, Nash and RJ-83.

I just want these tan printed panels to be available on P @B. Such usefull piece!

I want this, but rather at a price of € 20,-. Unfortunately, it seems to be exclusive in germany so far, so I'll have to wait until the last month of its shelf-life to get any discount.

I love everything about this except the price. Everything is really bright, which is so atypical of Star Wars and would actually interest my kids. Same with the minifigs. Even Yoda is happy-ish.

These builds are about right for young padawans too; just enough to do with only a little help, easy to fix upon breaking, small enough that each one is a good little project for 5-10 minutes then to be enjoyed. The beds, tiny kitchen, buddy speeder; all perfect for some fun play.

Oof, barely worth it at 40% discount Minifig collector bait.

128 pieces for £38 is a joke. And why of why is Yoda fluorescent green??

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Not the Jedi Temple we need or deserve...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The wall should be 2 or even 4 pieces with a space in the middle as already have an arch outside. I would move it all 2 studs forward as well to give more space inside and use the ladder to climb onto the wall.

Yoda was 200 years younger at that time.

LEGO needs to find a way to make these 4+ sets cheaper...

By in France,

That new hair piece for the boy has to be one of the most awful designs I've ever seen. They could simply have given him the hair of Baracus from the A Team from a few years ago instead of that... thing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Would it be too much to get an Avar Kriss minifigure somewhere in the future? I could see a lot of the Nihil requiring obnoxious new molds, but some of the High Republic Jedi should be straightforward prints.

Gravatar

Maybe I'm in the minority, and SW isn't my number 1 thing, but all those minifigs actually look terrible to me.

At first glance I thought this was a Friends set, but quickly realized it wasn't because the build would have been better.

We are never, ever getting the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Do you really think they'd make a setting, even if it's not directly included, where the murders of hundreds, if not thousands of innocents (including children!) happened? We are just as likely to get the tank from Last Crusade as the main Jedi Temple, because zero chance plus zero chance is still zero chances.

It just isn't happening...

They're not pricing it on piece count I believe. They're jacking the price for the large element printed wall pieces, printed Jedi emblem, and the new torsos, new wigs, newer Yoda head and new printed R2 dome. They know minifig collectors will go for all the new stuff.

We have two separate battle packs of the unit that carried out Operation Knightfall. I think the Temple is important enough and used in enough different material that it’s a non-issue, even for LEGO. At the end of the day, it’s Star Wars, and as long as the set wasnt specifically Anakin butchering the kids in the Council chamber, I genuinely don’t think they’d be averse to making it a set. The real reason we haven’t gotten one is for the same reason as why we’ve never gotten the Invisible Hand, or a Lucrehulk battleship: LEGO, until recently, wasn’t really interested in UCS models based off of the Prequels.

Now that they do, I wish they would only do Prequel UCS sets for a few years, as opposed to Luke’s Landspeeder or like the fourth oversized X-Wing.

Of course if they did a UCS Coruscant temple they would have to include it in the Imperial Palace version. (AFAIK It was originally a Sith temple in the first place anyway long before those upstart Jedi took over...)

Also, the 501st is a real world organization, with many, many thousands of members worldwide. It existed before EPIII was even thought of, and anyway, it appears in both Clone Wars shows all over the place. So those sets are probably not based on Order 66 directly.

This is not correct. Admittedly, if LEGO decided to produce a Jedi Temple, I doubt they would focus on the Order 66 scenes, although that relates more to opportunities to include certain desirable minifigure than to the content of those scenes.

It’d be nice to get an actual Riyo Chuchi, though preferably-for my taste-in her original or Bad Batch design. I didn’t care for her second look in The Clone Wars. But Senators/Senate-affiliated characters don’t often get figures, unless they happen to be secret Sith, gun-toting ex-queens, or rebel leaders.

And they are perfectly fine releasing a Death Star set twice because blowing up a planet with billions of inhabitants isn’t genocide (and neither was Jeddha or Scarif)? Or is it cool because the Rebels blew up the Death Star (twice) killing millions of imperials.

May I remind you that the second word in “Star Wars” is “Wars” and not “sunshine and lollipops”.

It's nice to see others want Chuchi as well! I think her second clone wars design is the best followed by her first outfit. The Bad Batch outfit falls in last, but I haven't watched S2 and that might have something to do with it. I would love to see a Talz speeder remake, senate heist, or a Trade Federation set based on Ahsoka and Chuchi's shenanigans. Although her popularity might not be big enough to get a set right now.
Also, I would add treacherous Rodians to the list of senators already made(Onaconda Farr).

I have it on good authority that the sun is classified as a medium-sized star, so hey, could be.

@PhantomBricks to each their own. I thought her updated look in later The Clone Wars seasons was kind of ugly, especially compared to how-dare I say it-cute she was in her initial appearance. Of course, The Clone Wars art style did that with some characters. I remember thinking that Anakin Skywalker got uglier every time he got a new animated design. Yeah, Chuchi might be out of luck unless Lego revisits some older concepts in future sets or she happens to play a more active role in some future project.

Didn’t know about “Uncle Ono”, when I wrote the last post. Of course, I was also temporarily baffled by the recent hidden tags update here on Brickset. Went and looked at our one and only Bail Organs figure, didn’t see a visible Senator tag on his page, and assumed that no one had bothered to create said tag for any characters.

And it looks like the violence in Star Wars debate from the Temple of Doom set announcement comments has returned. Personally, I figure that the biggest issue with a Coruscant Jedi Temple model is one of scale. Of course, there is definitely some argument to the fact that most of the action scenes that take place there are among the darkest in the series. The least depressing one I can think of is Kelleran Beq rescuing Grogu, and even that involves several dead Jedi and clones.

This is not the Jedi Temple we want but the Jedi Temple LEGO thinks we deserve. Even that Yavin 4 rebel base is a joke of a facade. If these wouldn't have exclusive minifigures no one would buy them.

Indeed, we appear to have different tastes. I prefer longer hair(that isn't in a weird shape), so her 2nd look easily wins. The only character that I thought looked worse later on was Anakin with his season 7 look. Most characters either improved or were fairly stagnate that I recall.

In regards to the temple, I could see Lego doing it in the same style of Yavin 4. Yavin 4 doesn't require enemies to fight as long there are enough story telling options. They would likely include a library area, the council room, hallway, and youngling training ground. Most scenes with opposition are too dark for Lego, but if they needed to, they could include Cad Bane and Todo. If they did make the temple, hopefully they would update Padawan Ahsoka.

Honestly, I think the set looks quite good. The minifigures are excellent and the exterior of the build appears very faithful to the onscreen location, with the artistic liberties inside also quite pleasing.
But this set costs $65 AUD at RRP, which is simply insane.
