Review: 40586 Moving Truck
Posted by Huw,The current gift with purchase at LEGO.com is 40586 Moving Truck, which is free with purchases in excess of €180/£160/$180.
The 301-piece set has been designed to complement this year's modular building 10312 Jazz Club which, presumably, is under new management.
Summary
40586 Moving Truck, 301 pieces.
Buy at LEGO.com »
An attractive period vehicle that looks great in the modular street
- Free when you buy the Jazz Club at the moment
- High spend threshold to acquire
The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.
It's always nice to get a feel for how much 'stuff' you're getting for free, so here's a picture showing the unopened bags.
A 6-sticker sheet provides decorations for the vehicle.
Two minifigures are provided, both of whom appear to be removal company workers going by the picture on the box, despite the male being dressed in a jumper.
Both have alternate expressions which are perhaps appropriate for when they are struggling to move heavy objects.
The van is huge compared to the size of the figures, but then most are nowadays. The cab is 4-wide and the back 6, and is somewhat reminiscent of such vehicles from the 1940s and 50s.
When viewed from the front the cab looks a bit squashed and slightly comical.
The set comes with a piece of modern art, an organ, a jukebox, table, moving box and a sack barrow.
Will it all go into the back of the van?
Surprisingly, yes, it all fits! The instructions show how to squeeze it all in, even with the table drawer open and lamp on top.
A ramp is provided to ease loading and unloading, which neatly stows away underneath the floor of the van.
It's an interesting set that not only provides a period vehicle to populate the modular street but also additional furniture that can be used to flesh out the interior of the club, or any other building for that matter.
The spend threshold is high, but if you've still to buy 10312 Jazz Club it will make a very welcome gift with purchase. Get it now while you can.

I do like that it all fits!
but that's much too high of a spend threshold for that.
I'd value the set at £20, so the spend threshold makes it seem pretty good value to me.
Looks like a nice little set, but I don't think I'm going to stretch my budget to get it.
If they used the new Speed Champion's wheelarch piece, it might help move the the front headlights a bit wider apart. As it is it looks a bit cross-eyed....
I want to like it, but there's something off about it for me - think it's mostly that the cab is 4 wide and looks a bit strange and could easily have been 6 wide and been able to take both mini figs.
Bit of a moot point though as I'm not planning on buying £180 of Lego to get it anyway
If I'm going to be spending that much money on a modular at some point anyway, I might as well take advantage of an awesome GWP. This was an easy choice.
@Huw
> Two minifigures are provided, both of whom appear to be removal company workers going by the picture on the box, despite the male being dressed in a jumper.
I assumed the minifig in the jumper was the person who is being moved (and helps with loading/unloading the truck).
Well, at least it's a City set not as desired by many instead of retro set better made a individual set.
Thanks for that front picture of the squooshed vehicle. Now I can save my big money for something bigger and more "autumn" feeling without feeling like I'm really missing out at this point.
I don't like stickers, and I'm not a fan of GWP-walling. That said, I love everything else about this, including the wonky proportions of the vehicle, those lovely side-builds and those great faces.
But she's definitely leaving him. You're can't convince me that that isn't the case. They're moving stuff together, but at the same time, she's moving on.
I don't know. I like the general design a lot, but it looks squished. Maybe 8-wide would have don the trick, or a 1-brick lower cabin/hood segment?
Without looking at the instructions, this will double-up nicely as a 3D puzzle, trying to fit all of the furniture into the back at the same time, especially knowing that it's possible.
I like the grill.
Nice! But I would mod the cab from 4-wide to 6-wide for a less comical look.
I think the ‘modern art’ is supposed to be a saxophone
Yes a beauty but a bit small.
Sadly no VIP pack or interesting sets on sale
I like this moving van set, the retro looking truck looks great. The addition of a packing puzzle (I'm NOT using the instructions to pack the van) is a plus for me.
I've had a redemption voucher for the World of Wonders since the beginning of the month and waiting for something to order to use it. I passed on the Ambulance Rescue as I didn't feel that was anything special. I'm conscious I have to place an order within 60 days so, with no current information on March GWPs, I felt it best to order now as I do rather like the Moving Truck.
I'm surprised we don't know about any GWPs for next month, aside from the VIP Add-On pack, or have I missed something?
got this tonight, with the purchase of the DeLorean...
I might look on ebay for this, as my budget is waiting for christmas now.
Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I think this should have been included in the Jazz Club set from the beginning.
Would also have made it easier to swallow that set's ridiculous RRP.

Quite. I wouldn't even call it clever, it's basic business. Those with a "day 1" mentality will buy it anyway so no incentive necessary. After six weeks a small incentive may coax those who want it but are waiting for the right moment to buy. Anyone who buys a new set immediately with no GWP or double points has no right to complain when a GWP they want comes along and they have nothing they want to buy. Patience is required when buying LEGO. We know the games they play so we have to use their rules. Few sets retired before two years so there are plenty of opportunities.

Why do you assume that this woman is not strong enough to carry the piano?
I think your offensive comment might be deleted.
Pluses and minuses in my opinion:
+ Items which come with truck are nice and can be placed in buildings.
+ Nice idea of set theme.
- It's weird that cabin is so slim with only one chair. There could be a couch which can usually be found in older trucks, even if two minifigs couldn't fit there it would look much better.
- Vintage taxi is much better addition to modulars and you don't cover your buildings with big white box with stickers.

I'm sure it's actually a popular opinion but it will never happen as it doesn't make business sense. We all know a relevant GWP will be released soon after so everyone should just wait. Perhaps if no-one bough the modulars on release date, waiting for the inevitable GWP, LEGO would change their strategy, but so many people just can't help themselves.
As for the ridiculous RRP, that is exactly why I wait for John Lewis (or equivalent shop in your country) to have it at 20% off. That's what I did with the Boutique Hotel last year.
I really like the retro vibe of this little truck. Too high a threshold, but nice little design nonetheless.
That’s me sorted - jazz club and this! Happy days (plus £20 off through VIP rewards!) ??
I may wait until March 1st when the new round of sets are released in the U.S. Hopefully it lasts until then.
After last year's Modular / GWP debacle, I decided to wait and see what happened this time round. Result! Picked up the Jazz Club and the Moving Truck this morning. And some other bits, but that's neither here not there...

Agreed. I enjoyed it when the Modulars usually (always?) came with a vehicle side-build.
That being said, I went ahead and purchased the Jazz Club in January ... so that I could get a second copy of an even better GWP, i.e., 40580. Come to think of it, I'm a bit puzzled at all the comments lamenting the fact that a Day 1 purchase of the Jazz Club meant "missing out" on a GWP. Was the Blacktron ship no longer available in Europe or something?
Looks to me like a new couple moving to The City have rented a moving van. I love it.

I'm sure those who purchase modulars on day 1 are fully aware of the dozen Lego Leaks sites and knew about it well in advance, planning ahead.
Nice set, just a shame that it's a GWP.
Today I learned the term "sack barrow." My name for this tool is "hand truck," although I also know people who call them "two-wheelers" or "dollies."

They were perhaps lamenting a "related GWP" rather than "any GWP".

Not sure how you managed to get offended by this comment? I have a piano at home and guarantee you that the average man (or woman) would not be able to carry it by themselves - the thing weighs almost 100KG. Sensitive much?"
Such a nice little set! I really dig the design, in part exactly because it looks a bit cartoonish. I mean, it looks like it came straight from Duckburg!
Such a shame it's a GWP. Otherwise I would have certainly bought it.

Fair enough!
Have ordered Jazz Club to get this GWP. Will probably modify the cab to six wide.

Everything fits in the truck? Nice! I built, installed, and moved office furniture for many years- I've played many a game of "Truck Tetris."

Would love to do that. Unfortunately, the modulars are LEGO exclusives nowadays over here. So no discounts anymore. And since the only "exclusive partner" that was allowed to sell the modulars went bankrupt, there hasn't been any alternative either. Would help if Smyths carried the line. But even though they offer some of the exclusives, the modulars aren't part of that lineup.

My understanding is that dolly is a more general term that also includes larger devices of a similar nature.

That's a shame. John Lewis currently has the Police Station and Boutique Hotel at 20% off.
I intentionally sat out buying the Jazz Club knowing that there would be some GWP coming along with a high threshold. I regularly hold off on most expensive sets now so these high GWP thresholds mean nothing to me since there's always something waiting. People who buy the expensive sets on Day 1 should learn patience and then these GWP thresholds are no longer an issue.

Irony:
1. the humorous or mildly sarcastic use of words to imply the opposite of what they normally mean
Is that logo supposed to be a reference to something? Like an older set or a real world company? Just because a spacey version of it appears on 5983 so I wondered if this was a running thing

Don't quit your day-job, friend.
Hi Austin. Does that mean Galeria have finally gone bust then? The one here in Bonn is still hanging on and has sometimes had decent discounts on modulars.

Versions of that logo date back at least to 1990's 6375 Trans Air Carrier.

Nice. Figured it would be something like that
A fantastic and unique little set!
That price point though is utterly absurd.

6624 Delivery Van (1983)
Unlike many, my minifigs are tired of the big city life and decided to make the move into their inherited A-frame upstate. So they can work on their art and piano compositions, apparently. Shame noone wanted their bulky jukebox.
"But I want it!"
- John F. Kennedy, during a zombie outbreak in the Pentagon, 1963
If I hadn't just spent $100 to get 40581 and then another $40 to get 40585, I'd almost certainly get this. I bought 10312 in January, but I'm sure I could find something else to buy if I looked hard enough...
Darn you @WizardOfOss for mentioning Duckburg. Now that theme song is running through my head...
@rick77: Similar, but not the same logo. The arrow on 6624 doesn't curve around the package.
Now that we all know that a vehicle is coming if you can wait to buy the modular then its all good with me. I don't have to have the new modular day one, but this is a perfect compliment!
For fans who bought the Jazz Club on release, this sure is unfortunate. Imagine if LEGO made extra stock, so people who bought the Jazz Club on day one could take their receipts back to the LEGO store to redeem their GWP.
I'm lucky I decided not to ask for the Jazz Club for the new year, because now I can get a GWP if I ask for it now.
I like the set, it looks nice. The fact that you can neatly stow away all the nicely-built furniture is really cool, and I especially love the piano with the golden teeth as pedals. A moving truck seems like a nice companion to any modular! It looks great outside the Jazz Club as well.
Also, the bags seem quite packed and the whole set feels decently substantial for a GWP. I hope LEGO continues to make these small GWP's with relevant builds to to the Modular sets they accompany. (though I can't help but feel that the Moving Truck would better accompany a Furniture Store modular)
By the way, @Huw would you happen to know when CapnRex101 will post his review of 75337 ?

Neat idea! I usually hold off buying sets above $40, until they are discounted beyond 20% off somewhere.
I do make exceptions though, for sets from popular themes like Star wars which I expect to be sold out everywhere. Most of the time I save Star Wars purchases for May 4th so I can get the promos though.

Interesting, perhaps so! I imagine there is a lot of regional variation. To me, a dolly is a simple platform on wheels, not including a lever or handle of any kind.

Well of course she is! She doesn't have a place to ride in the truck!
Even though some states don't require them, I think the lack of a front number plate looks a bit odd.
I purposely waited to buy my A-Frame Cabin so I could get this GWP. I'm a happy camper.
I don't own any modular buildings but this truck looks like a good fit for a modular city.

Spring Fun. 40606
@Huw , Thanks for the bag pic. It's useful in many ways, especially for larger sets. Yes, it also helps to show the amount of included 'stuff.'
This is a good companion GWP at twice the piece count and figs of last year's modular GWP. It's also a bit lower on the threshold. Still expensive though, and the color-matching on the stickers is inexcusable!
It's a cute set and a nice addition to the Jazz Club or any other modular building. LEGO should offer us more regular retail sets like this in the city line, like small add-ons to bigger sets, which also work as standalone sets.
Curious how the furniture etc will look inside the Jazz Club. I enjoyed that build but thought the furnishings, while very nice, were a bit sparse. Hopeful these pieces will fill it in.
It would be perfect if is 2 studs wider!
Thanks for the review. Hope to get mine soon.
The truck reminds me of a Bedford from the 50's
Love how it all fits, even the sack truck. Is the ramp stowed under the van in the photos? Very neat if it is.
Always hold off buying the modular until there’s a good GWP so didn’t have to buy anything I wasn’t planning to anyway

Let's look at the pictures in this review.
Picture 1: Look at his happy face; his oblivious face, the face of a man who thinks he has his life in order (and neatly packaged, in numbered bags, including an actual 'how-to' instruction-manual). Contrast her bemused, melancholic grimace, the face of a woman who is already done mourning the death of a failed relationship.
"He hasn't even noticed that we're only moving HIS stuff. HIS Hammond organ, HIS garish neon saxophone art, HIS ridiculously overpriced jukebox. We've spent all morning clearing out his precious man-cave, and he still thinks we're in this together. I have given this man five children and the best years of my life. Once we've moved his stuff, I'm taking my truck and the kids, and we're off to the airport.", her eyes seem to say.
Picture 2: Look at his concentrated face, the face of a man fumbling around in his pocket for the engagement-ring he intends to present to her. Now look at the expression of horror on her face as she realizes that, yes indeed, this man who she's left, by degrees, over the course of the past few months, actually chose THIS moment, after all of that back-breaking labour, to propose to her, to tie her to him, forever. It's her worst nightmare come true. All of her dreams - her freedom, her desire to take the kids, change her name, and create a new life in Barbados with a fiery lover named Rámon, are now in danger of being shattered.
How will this end? I dunno, it's up to you if and when you receive this lovely GWP. Let us know in the comments!
A City car with opening doors! Nice original little set I'll definitely will try to remake and change a bit myself like I've done with other GWPs like the taxi (mine is a dark red & black Citroën Traxion Avans). This would also look great in Sand Green, Sand or Dark Blue (and less comical perhaps?). Maybe I'll remove the top 2x2 dish and make a different bonnet. Those front mudguards and doors will be a challenge in a different color, but the don't have to the same I think. Looks really doable and moddable looking at the instructions!

Rejected proposals hurt, but it hurts worse when he proposes and she says "Hold that thought, I remembered I forgot the kid's donuts at the shop" and then you never see her or the kids again after they drive off to the "coffee shop around the corner". That would really sting!
..Then again, he might spend the next twenty years thinking she just got lost getting back, and she'll be home any minute. If that's the case, he's gonna die of old age / hunger waiting for her on the sidewalk.
It is simply a great set. I wish the city line would be as good looking as the gwp sets.

Other than the stickers, there doesn't appear to be anything exclusive to this set so if you really wanted to you could probably acquire the parts for less money than trying to obtain the set.
I think it should even be part of the Jazz club set, not as a GWP at all lol.
That would make the $230 price tag more reasonable haha

Hopefully the cat didn't eat them!
I like the man's head with its interesting expressions. I've also never seen a minifig with a chin like that. Correct me if I'm wrong, but minifig chins in general are quite rare, aren't they?
Did LEGO retire the hand truck mold? It seems odd that they would create an accessory like the hand truck out of pieces when they already have a part that is exactly what they need. (part 2495)
I absototallutely want this 40586 Moving Truck to be a regular Lego set!
Because that is one hell of a comical truck, plus a nice assortment of furniture.
Too bad, but I already bought the Jazz Club when there was another GWP 40580 Blacktron spaceship in January. But then again, because I did, I do have the Blacktron spaceship.
ps.
Personally, I wouldn't mind the entire truck being even bigger with a cab similar to most current Speed Champion sets that can have two minifigs sit next to each other. Image a 1930/40s style truck with a flatbed carrying a speed champions car! Am I getting carried away now?!?
pps.
TLG really ought to consider re-releasing this set at a later date again as a regular set for purchase, or something very similar (but in that case even better) than this.
ppps.
It's a bummer, I am probably going to miss out on this wonderful set if it is only going to be available as a GWP for a very limited time. Yeah, yeah, I know the after market, probably with an insane price tag plus shipping charges.
