Review: 75350 Clone Commander Cody Helmet

Posted by ,

The growing Helmet Collection includes some excellent models, although many originate from the Original Trilogy. Fortunately, the latest range starts to explore the Clone Wars, containing two celebrated Clone officers and representing both armour phases.

75350 Clone Commander Cody Helmet appears remarkably accurate in official images, faithfully portraying the angular features of Phase I helmets. Furthermore, the orange highlights look superb and this design represents a surprising and appealing departure from other helmets.

Summary

75350 Clone Commander Cody Helmet, 766 pieces.
£59.99 / $69.99 / €69.99 | 7.8p/9.1c/9.1c per piece.

Commander Cody was definitely worth waiting for, achieving great accuracy

  • Impressive, angular shape
  • Striking orange features
  • Minor inaccuracies around the visor

The Completed Model

LEGO has developed welcome consistency across the Helmet Collection, as each model stands on an identical black plinth. The combination of slopes is attractive and I love the sharp contrast between the helmet and the display base, which integrates a decorated plaque. Additionally, the height of 19cm, excluding the antenna, matches previous helmets.

The structure shares some similarities with those other models, although fewer than I envisaged because the curvature around the base of the helmet is unusual. The central section stands out in particular, attached using jumper plates and clips. Otherwise, the extensive use of bricks with studs on the side is familiar, while the angled panels resemble 75328 The Mandalorian Helmet.

Such similarities are appropriate, as Phase I Clone Trooper armour is substantially influenced by Mandalorian designs. The T-shaped visor is particularly recognisable between them and reflects the onscreen helmet, although the angles of the vertical section should be slightly steeper. Even so, I think the shape looks marvellous.

Ideally, the mouth would extend further towards the edge too, but no wedge plates are available to create such acute angles. Also, there should be a vent underneath the orange decoration on Cody's chin. Fortunately though, his characteristic orange visor looks perfect and even includes an accurate trans-red tactical light on top.

Nine stickers are included, eight of which represent the vents along each side. Printed elements would obviously be preferable, but the vents cover different slopes, so I can understand the use of stickers. The antenna is correctly positioned and looks good, even though the light bluish grey ball joint appears inevitably awkward.

The elegant fin on top corresponds with the source material though, integrated perfectly with the studded surface of the helmet. Moreover, I like the light bluish grey panels on the reverse, even though this colour is arguably too dark. Nonetheless, the shape is splendid and different colours only serve to highlight the details.

Overall

Angular helmets are well-suited to LEGO recreations, so I anticipated the Phase I helmet would be quite impressive, before the new sets were revealed. 75350 Clone Commander Cody Helmet certainly fulfils that potential, including fantastic detail and closely resembling the officer's famed visage from Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

There are some compromises around the visor, especially in relation to the mouth, which should be longer. However, considering the limitations of the format, I am delighted with this rendition of Commander Cody's helmet. The price of £59.99, $69.99 or €69.99 represents the new standard among Helmet Collection models and seems expensive, but discounts are bound to come.

This or Rex will probably be my first set of 2023.

By in Canada,

I am so glad Lego is finally trying clones again. This is awesome!

This is going to be a really excellent set to modify and customize when it gets a discount. As is it's nice but extremely expensive.

Very nice, but not my jam. I wish the helmets were just a bit bigger, personally.

By in Denmark,

Love this one so much, i like the commander cody helmet better than the captain rex, might be because phase 1 helmets are just easier to make look better as a lego helmet.

Young me would have lost his little mind at the thought of there ever being ORANGE lego pieces.

I couldn't believe how small they were when I first saw some in a display case. It seemed like a joke or something.

Minor gripe, but I wish the mouth had a grille like the film design of Phase I clone helmets instead of none like the TCW design.

By in Netherlands,

Not only is the 'mouth' inaccurate (I always thought it was a 'moustache' and the indent on the chin is a small mouth. I still do and will die on that hill), but the indent on the chin is almost absent. There's the markings around it, but no black bit? The 'cheeks' are also notably lacking depth, which I think could have been achieved with light bluish grey.
Finally, the antenna is too stubby compared to the source material.

That said, I'm glad that these exist amongst the endless stream of OT designs. I look forward to see people trying to make a reg version of either helmet.

Lego often has the issue of being smaller in person, but these really do seem tiny once you have one. Which makes the price even more absurd. $40 at most is what I would consider fair value for what you get.

I think the antenna is fine. It is certainly the correct height and anything thinner would be considered too fragile, I suspect.

I am surprised by the omission of the recessed vent on the chin, although I suppose only a sticker could be used there.

I like them and actually might consider buying them once they’re on sale. Commander Cody’s helmet is my favorite.

By in United States,

This set look fantastic! I would have to wait for a serious discount though because $70 is way too much. It looks like it would be a lot of fun to modify into other clones as well.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

For $100 aud... not for me. Hopefully I can get this one cheaper somewhere.

Either way, Rex would be my priority

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I won't rest until I see pictures of someone replacing the antenna with an orange brick separator for a laugh.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Too bad they couldn't have foreseen to make the antenna's ball joint pieces in orange.

@CapnRex101:
Seems kinda early to be posting a review of a set that's not due out for over a month. Did they send it early because these sets are available to preorder?

@fulcrumbop:
Given that these socket joints are some of the most color-locked elements in the history of the company, no. That would not be good. Then all we'd ever have were gaudy orange socket joints. People complain enough about them being in a neutral grey. Imagine trying to make trees with orange parts. Or an animal with a dark coat of fur.

On the fence about buying either Rex or Cody's helmet now. Will definitely try to pick up one on May 4th, but now I'm unsure about Cody because there are a bunch of inaccuracies I hadn't spotted before this review.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think that the chin graphic for Cody here should've been bigger slightly and put in a black spot right in the center part of the star burst. Then the element below have in black.

Yeah, I don't like the inaccuracies either, and the omnipresent inability to match stickers to lego colors ("white is soooo hard! (sigh!)" Lego Graphic Design).

Nevertheless, I'm definitely grabbing the Clone Commanders for my helmet collection once they drop to 20% or less. These definitely aren't done well enough for a rush order. To be fair, I can no longer justify any full price Lego buy. :(

Any chance we can get some sort of scale in future reviews? Perhaps when size if a factor in the value/price?

Look at the set listing under ‘more images’ to see more photos and scale in someone’s hand and height (inches and cm’s).

Can't wait for the @CapnRex101 review of 75349 Captain Rex Helmet.

Wonder if its gunna get Meta?! :D

It would have been cool if they had some extra pieces hidden inside to make a regular clone if you wanted it

Here's a bit of a hot take, I like this more than Rex's helmet.

@TheBrickshipyard:
I’ve actually been saving helmets to qualify for the following year’s May 4th promo, so I buy them 14 months behind street date. I’m paying full price, of course, but it gets me the GWP with sets I definitely want.

I don't know if that's actually a hot take. There seems to be a lot of people(including myself) who prefer this helmet over Rex. I'm biased because I prefer P1, but I find Cody's inaccuracies less egregious than Rex's.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The chin looks a bit odd, and the grey on the antenna is a bit annoying. Nevertheless, I cannot wait to get this one.

I won't have enough budget for both (also Rex is a Captain) but I will try to get one for my collection to stand next to my 75277 Boba Fett Helmet. Either one will look good and I'm genuinely unsure if there will be any stock left on Mat 4th when I try to get this year's promos.

I can still justify a few full priced LEGO sets, like polybags and genuinely well-designed sets like the R-34 Skyline, or sets that aren't so common (like the 501st troopers or 501st battle pack) whenever I can find them. I bought the 501st battle pack at full price a few weeks ago because it was at the first place I found it, and I wasn't going to take any chances.

Yeah, I do the same with the small sets- like the new 501st. But, with the prevalence of good GWPs (things that evoke serious FOMO), I haven't really bought anything at full RRP in a long, long time.

I imagine that's part of Lego's™ current marketing strategy. Jack up the RRP, run nearly constant sales, 2x points, or big GWPs to boost sales despite the prices, and rake in the money.

BTW, Oregon is trying to ban kangaroo products. How does Clancy feel about that?

LEGO's marketing strategies are becoming such blatant ripoffs, I swear.

Unfortunately, Clancy jumped too high and his ground harness fractured. He fell off the face of the earth. He will be missed :( On the other hand, I got a new pet (ride to school) and his name is Steve. He thinks that banning kangaroo products is good because it saves his brothers and sisters.
