Review: 75344 Boba Fett's Starship Microfighter

Posted by ,

Microfighters were officially introduced in 2014, although the range originated two years earlier with products developed for conventions. These notably include the Mini Slave I available from Star Wars Celebration in 2012. Remarkably, this vessel was never revisited, until now!

75344 Boba Fett's Starship Microfighter greatly improves upon the previous design, taking full advantage of the broader selection of curved slopes and wedge slopes available today. The accompanying minifigure is very desirable too.

Summary

75344 Boba Fett's Starship Microfighter, 85 pieces.
£8.99 / $9.99 / €9.99 | 10.6p/11.8c/11.8c per piece.

75344 Boba Fett's Starship Microfighter is among the best Microfighters to date!

  • Perfect cartoonish proportions
  • Clever cockpit design
  • Neat functions
  • Excellent minifigure
  • Boba Fett looks strange without his rangefinder

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Minifigure

Boba Fett returned to screens with a vengeance in The Mandalorian, requisitioning his battered armour. This minifigure originally appeared in 75312 Boba Fett's Starship and features stunning detail, although the sand green helmet has monopolised discussion. Dark green would arguably be more accurate, but has presumably been avoided because the colour would appear too dark and LEGO would be unable to highlight darker sections of the cheeks.

Personally, I am satisfied with the current helmet colour, although I do think Fett's helmet looks odd without a rangefinder attached. However, that is also an understandable compromise, since the Microfighter's cockpit is fairly cramped. The minifigure is otherwise perfect though, featuring an accurate torso design and continued detail on the legs.

Fett's arms are also nicely decorated, including his classic Mythosaur symbol and wrist-mounted rocket launcher. The scarred head beneath his helmet looks fantastic too, while the minifigure is armed with an EE-3 carbine rifle. This distinctive weapon has been identically constructed since 75222 Betrayal at Cloud City was released.

The Completed Model

Microfighters possess a consistent aesthetic, exaggerating a vehicle's most distinctive features and enlarging its cockpit to accommodate a minifigure. However, the cockpit configuration of the Slave I is among its most recognisable features, requiring a unique interpretation of the existing Microfighters style. Thankfully, I think the resulting model looks superb, balancing accuracy with cartoonish proportions.

Unique among Microfighters, this vehicle includes a functioning cockpit which closes above the minifigure. Moreover, the cockpit is just large enough for Boba Fett to sit in two positions, either as shown below for landing, or upright during flight. I am impressed that the designer managed to provide enough space for this, especially with Fett's jetpack still attached.

The wings are each attached using a Technic pin, so can be rotated separately into position for flight. The model is easily displayed in this configuration, resting on the dark red engine cowling and the boom extending below the cockpit. Furthermore, the flick-fire missiles double as laser cannons, returning to LEGO Star Wars after not appearing in 2021 or 2022.

I was pleasantly surprised by the engine detailing as well, which is simple, but could easily have been omitted altogether. Trans-orange 1x2 plates represent the actual engines, while a 2x2 dish forms the circular docking ring. This engine arrangement is inaccurate, but the dark bluish grey 2x8 plate that interrupts the engines was necessary to strengthen the model.

Overall

Certain vehicles are particularly suitable for Microfighters, transitioning easily and retaining their most recognisable features. I imagine the Slave I has proven rather difficult, given how long this iconic vessel has taken to join the series. Fortunately, 75344 Boba Fett's Starship Microfighter was undoubtedly worth waiting for!

The model is perfect for play, while also faithfully recreating features of the source material and integrating some basic functions. The option to seat Boba Fett for landing or flight is particularly welcome, even though the minifigure is missing his rangefinder. Additionally, I think the price of £8.99, $9.99 or €9.99 represents good value, so would highly recommend this Microfighter.

The only micro fighter with an actual mostly enclosed space.

Wrong film/show, but I'm pained at the lack of a classic 1x2x5 Han Solo brick.

Also, this is an easy recolor for a new Jango. (The smart thing would have been to release two of these in alternate colors. SIGH.)

Who knew that one of the most feared ships in-universe could be so adorable! Lego has really figured out the Slave I at any scale.

By in United States,

This is a fabulous addition to the MF series! I'll be getting one for me and one for each of my sons. Good details, updated/current Boba figure and an intelligently constructed Slave 1 make this a winner.

His ship was named Slave I...and it had nothing to do with enslaving other beings. I don't care that woke Disney changed the name. It will ALWAYS be Slave I to me.

It's a great cheap way to get that figure. The arms are great for a yellow daredevil purist custom.

It took them long enough to actually get that part right.

I've seen They Live, and to be honest I'd rather be woke than asleep. ;-)

...Anyway, It's a neat model. However, I lament the return of flick-fire missiles:
"Somehow, flick-fire missiles have returned." (sorry, but it had to be done.)

Slave I? Starship? Let us find a healthy compromise, my friend.

"Slaveship"?

Middle ground: Boba Fett swtiches from bounty hunting to becoming a corporate performance reviewer. If he doesn't give you a good performance evaluation, he comes after you in his Firespray. Hence, it's now called "I evals."

Great little model. But Boba Fett should smile a little bit.

Love the ship. Best microfighter in the entire series. I hate the color difference between the helmet/body though. Gonna have to try and get a paint job done for that one...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Let’s avoid the naming drama, it’s stupid and I could care less.

Now on topic with the model. I really do think it’s nice. Lots of MOCs seem to struggle pulling off the design. Proportions honestly aren’t that bad either! The lack of rangefinder is disappointing, but many of us probably have spares, especially from the Mando Battle Pack.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Great looking model, I think the best mirofighter. This is the ship & Boba Fett minifigure I want.

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

I highly recommend this, the minifigure is one of the best in recent years. I believe many own spare rangefinders, so it's not a problem at all. The build looks nice and can be put against Millenium Falcon MF.

If only they recoloured this and gave us Jango with printed arms...

We’ve toured a few historical sites over the last year, and in different states they consistently use the term “enslaved person” instead of slave.

I guess there was some kind of memo that went out. But equally surprising is that Disney didn’t get the note. It should be “Enslaved Person(s) One.”

Roman numerals being, of course, a damning signifier of the cisheteronormativecolonialist mindset.

And obviously LEGO isn’t doing their due diligence, or they would’ve called Disney out by now on The Electronic Town Square Website Place.

Together we can make a differential equation.

Nobody changed the name. This set just has a literal description of being Boba's starship. Nobody is saying you can't call it the Slave I. Have fun tilting at windmills, though, if that's what gets you through this crazy world.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is one of the best microfighters they have released! I really wish they would recolor the helmet and jetpack, but maintaining the gradient would be harder if they did recolor it. Perhaps they could have recolored the helmet and jetpack to green(The vanilla green color that I can never remember the official name for) so that they could keep the darker colored cheekbones? It would still be inaccurate, but it would look better. I think one of my biggest issues is that the helmet/jetpack aren't noticeably different from his og look. Either way, it's still a solid $10 set.

There are interviews by Lego designers where they state that Disney told them not to use the term "Slave 1" any more. I thought this was common knowledge.

It's a silly Disneysm, but nowhere near as bad at how they changed Boba Fett into the friendliest, morally upstanding crime lord he became in that TV series.

Regardless, fans will always call it Slave 1, and this mini Slave 1 is the cheapest way to get the fat Fett minifigure.

My point is the name wasn't changed. It's just not on the box. Is it not Boba Fett's starship?

And it's not about being virtuous. It's about putting facts over "they changed the name" statements.

Of course fans will continue to call it Slave 1 because that's what it is. It's all internet BS for people to type strawman comments about "the ruling elites."

By in United Kingdom,

Forgot to mention thoughts in my last comment, but - I really like this one! Wasn't aware til this review you could sit Boba in both positions, but that addition alone's prolly enough to make me grab it day one.

Gotta say though, real shame this is the only microfighter in this wave - and if 2022's anything to go by, possibly the only microfighter of the year. More please cheers!

I don't want this thread hijacked into another slave thread, but it's common knowledge that Disney have told all toy companies not to use the term "Slave 1" in any material.

In the show he calls it Firespray gunship which is the model, like saying Olympic-class ocean liner as opposed to The Titantic.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

If I remember correctly, in one of the Star Wars books Boba Fett says it was a mistake to call Slave I Slave I as it implied he had another starship lying around somewhere - Slave II (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Slave_II). He’d probably be on board with the name change, the enigmatic dog.

The Lego Movie taught me that everything is awesome, up to and including renaming wonkily-named spaceships from a less-enlightened era, far away and long ago (specifically the Americas, in the 1970's).

I don't care what fans might call it. It will ALWAYS be "Dave I" to me. Or maybe "Steve I", I haven't decided yet.

We'll, the official Star Wars website calls it that. https://www.starwars.com/databank/boba-fetts-starship

(Cue the endless debates over whether "if it's not in a movie, it's not official" is a thing. Given that everything *except* the movies called it that, I'd say we're fine.)

Glad to know that you want the ship’s pronouns respected.

By the by, ever heard of slave-catchers? Because of course there is absolutely no similarity at all between them and bounty hunters. None whatsoever. So get your mind out of the uncisheteronormativecolonialist gutter.

Surprisingly well-executed Microfighter. From the reveals, I was ready to leave this set off my to-buy list for the start of 2023, but now I think it will be nice to get another one. It will go nicely with the Slave I from 2021 that I got that Christmas.

I hope that they'll recolor the design for a Jango Fett's Slave I next year. They've done something like that for Y-wing and X-wing Microfighters.

It's a tad annoying that Boba Fett's helmet and jetpack still doesn't match the rest of his armour, although the rest of the figure looks superb as ever.

A lot of the people here in the comments are acting as if LEGO doesn't regularly give Star Wars sets generic names, such as "Anakin's Jedi Interceptor" instead of Eta-2 Actis-class Interceptor, or "General Grievous' Starfighter" instead of Soulless One. I don't like the name change either, but only because of the context behind the change.

Speaking of hotness, study after study shows that women are most attracted to dad bods. This is undoubtedly because it connotes financial and emotional stability. I look in the mirror and fight the good fight everyday.

I don't want anyone to feel ashamed. That's accepting defeat. Fight the good fight! Live a long healthy life. A lil disgust at fat and sloth is a good thing. But, also love yourself everyday and don't hate on a lil jiggle or a nice, full tummy.

That was a great set that provided all the required functionality and a new desirable character at a comfortable $20 price point. Well-executed for its time, it was more than satisfying for 6 years until another Boba Fett Slave I was released. I'm sure original Mike would agree with me :)

By in Germany,

Boba needs olive green armor and helmet, the print scheme could stay identical to the current parts. Sand green helmet is accurate for TESB Bobas, ROTJ had the base color altered slightly which Lucasfilm stayed close to. The shade Boba used to repaint his armor with is darker than the shade he had before the Sarlacc pit but both of them are closer to olive green than any other shade of green.

I am immensely irritated that nobody talks about wanting olive green Boba parts. The color got introduced in 2012, just months after the first sand green Boba. This decision will apparently affect all releases of non-TESB Bobas until the heat death of the universe. The 2018-Current Harry Potter line already made "nobody cares"-tier alterations to figures like Snape and McGonnagal after just 5 years of the theme, you would think they could do the same to Bobas helmet and jetpack not for accuracy but just to make things feel fresh again. In the same vein Vader needs another TESB/ROTJ torso print again. Last time he had the blue button was the OG 1999 torso. He has been in ANH or ROTS outfits forever which is jarring as most sets he was in during this time are based on TESB or ROTJ. When the printed arms were announced I really though they would use the chance to keep 2 Vader torsos in circulation, instead it's the same one, just with or without arm printing. They print torso pieces in one go, so they really didn't need to print identical torso designs on both parts.

Regardless of the name "controversy," the redundancy of this name irks me:

Boba Fett's Starship Microfighter

could just be

Boba Fett's Microfighter

Let them rename the Slave I. As long as the true fans remember what real Star Wars is, Disney will never win.

Boba Fett’s GUNSHIP is Slave I
Rae Sloane was never in the movies
Star Wars will always belong to the fans

@Padmewan: What about 75223, Naboo Starfighter Microfighter? Or 75264, Kylo Ren's Shuttle Microfighter, which was less redundant and more self-contradictory? There're a whole bunch more, this isn't a new thing.

Well, LEGO has done it. It’s too cute to miss this one. I’ll be buying multiple of this set. Throw a Grogu minifig in there sitting on Boba Fet’s lap.. HeHeHe. Awesome. Nice job on this one. {:)]

I love the microfighters, and this one looks to be a fantastic addition to the lineup!

I really want to see TLG produce some of the microfighters from the recent LEGO Star Wars video game as sets. We need a micro Death Star!

I'm not sure the ability to seat Boba Fett in landing mode is intentional, as he then faces the wrong direction. Also, depending on the movie/series/etc the cockpit doesn't always rotate - in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett it doesn't iirc. Lastly, no official pictures of the set show him seated like that.
