Review: 30625 Luke Skywalker with Blue Milk

Posted by ,

LEGO video games commonly introduce unique minifigure polybags, including characters which seem unlikely to appear in standard sets. 30625 Luke Skywalker with Blue Milk certainly satisfies that requirement, given the remarkable subject!

While peculiar, this minifigure looks superb and carries an interesting accessory, which provides references to LEGO and Star Wars.

Summary

30625 Luke Skywalker with Blue Milk, 6 pieces.
Buy at LEGO.com »

Despite an unusual subject, Luke and his blue milk carton are well-designed.

  • Expressive double-sided head
  • Fun referential accessory
  • Odd subject choice

Minifigure

Luke Skywalker wearing his Tatooine garb has appeared frequently, surpassing almost any other Star Wars minifigures recently. The character's white tunic and reddish brown belt are therefore well-established, alongside legs that include fabric bands wrapped around Luke's boots. These designs are unaltered from previous appearances.

However, the double-sided head is unique and presents blue milk on both sides. These faces offer very limited uses, but I like the differing expressions because both convey great personality. Luke's concerned face is especially fun, as though he has been caught sneaking milk! The tan hair element remains the same as always and looks splendid.

Perhaps the most appealing aspect of this minifigure is its accessory. The decorated blue milk carton definitely resembles the standard LEGO milk carton, with the same medium blue colour and a flower. However, the existing cow design has been replaced with a Bantha, reflecting the origin of blue milk. This simple change is fun and matches the appearances of blue milk during LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

Overall

While probably not the most desirable exclusive minifigure, 30625 Luke Skywalker with Blue Milk embraces the irreverent humour of LEGO video games. The design is cleverly executed and both faces are wonderfully expressive, while the blue milk carton is a pleasing addition to the polybag.

Nevertheless, it is impossible to avoid considering alternative possibilities. H1-NT, the Protocol droid which aids the player throughout the video game, would have been great. That minifigure would be more versatile and need fewer new graphics, vacating a production slot for something else within the LEGO Star Wars theme. Luke is fun though, as expected.

I don't get why people are paying $60+ for this figure. Basically for a faceprint and a print on a 1x1 block.

I don’t know the full history of any episode IV Luke Skywalker minifigures, but has LEGO always had Luke’s pants and shoes be all-white like his tunic? I would rather see some of the more subtle colors that are on the outfit.

Also, why do they lighten his hair for New Hope but darken it for Empire minifigures? Makes no sense! :)

Here’s a link to a picture of one of the original photo shoots of Mark Hamill, don’t know if this will work or not I don’t know the exact HTML to use here.

EDIT:
I did just go avail myself of the database…why in the world did they STOP doing some color changes down there??

It's called "Collector" and completeness; some people collect Sets from a theme, some Minfigures from a theme and other even 1 of each Lego Piece/Part. I myself collect Lego Animal Kingdom parts/builds (non-Duplo/Friends).

I wasn’t sure what I would get from a review of a minifigure with a milk carton, but I think the Capn could have summarised with “waste of a production slot” which seems the take home message.

By in United States,

Is LEGO going to be making any more of the deluxe version of the video game that include this minifigure? OR is what's been sold all the copies we're going to get?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

They should have used a sticker for the bantha on the milk, then everyone would be unhappy

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It'll go great in Beru's kitchen!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wish they would’ve sent out those minifigs to those of us who purchased the deluxe version for the PC. I’m not a collector of LEGO Star Wars, but that Luke would look great on my desk.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yeah, it's just a one-off polybag minifig referencing a movie event included with a game. People love unique stuff (myself included)!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Now I know there are different milk cartons, suddenly I want to collect them! (I have this one 71032-2)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I added this to my wanted list when I saw it pop up on Brickset a long time ago, thinking it would be a fun polybag to buy. It’s too bad the only way to get it was to preorder the game. I don’t play video games so I’m not going to get it now.

Luke's hair in A New Hope is probably sun-bleached, from being out and about on Tatooine. In addition to his hair getting darker, his vitamin D levels may have dropped after becoming a Jedi.

Amusing as a minifig but very difficult to separate from the narrative abuse that Disney has heaped on the Star Wars universe, as exemplified by this particular scene.

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Since I saw I thought it was a terrible choice instead of a more serious approach for a game exclusive. Not even dual molded legs.

Not as cute as Zero Two is.

While I get why they chose this Minifigure, he only appears in one cutscene and the milk part in The Last Jedi, both in the film and the game, was more memorable. H1-NT probably would’ve been the best character choice for one of these but given the lukewarm reception of ”original idea based on existing IP” sets that’s probably why they didn’t.

Assuming UV-driven biosynthesis of vitamin D is possible, or even required, in 'humans' from a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away is a slippery slope... ;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

A lot of weird complaints about this figure, per usual. I think it's fun, a main character of the franchise, and directly relates to the game it was included with. Conversely, I couldn't care less about a H1-NT droid so I'm glad they went this route.

Gravatar
By in United States,

He's a decent figure, but not worth the demand some people are giving toward him. I'll put him on the shelf with other promo figures, but he doesn't match the likes of Darth Revan or the Shadow ARF in design.

Would rather they'd have gone with Rebel Friend, with a minikit or Gonk droid. More referential to the games themselves, while still being applicable to normal SW.

The hair always bothered me, I guess part of the reason is that old action figure toys had Luke with straight up yellow hair and the first Lego figures also had him tan in all appearances so it might just be grandfather clause, the same way that Obi-Wan isn't allowed to get a hair change and Han Solo had to make due with the standard male hair for so long.

The missing colors are probably because Lego simply dislikes making lower body halves with different hip colors from the legs. They did that all the time before 2014 but since then most figures had monochrome legs which led to several strange choices like Shoretrooper, Hovertank Driver, Scout Trooper and most egrigously Ben Kenobi with the brown torso representing his cloak but merely two small brown stripes on the front of the otherwise tan legs, a figure design originating from the same set as this Luke body.
I like the all white Luke body as a variation since it is reminiscent of some old toys and the classic original movie poster but the figure is so ubiquitous now, they really should have introduced a new alternative by now. I for one still prefer the 2008 ANH Luke over the 2014 one and upgraded most of my Lukes with those 2008s white hips with tan legs and prefer the standard male hair piece in dark tan over any of the official ANH Lukes hair pieces.
This figure is a good idea for an exclusive, an obscure variation you can live without, more joke collectible than toy.

That makes no sense when you can clearly see in the movie and promo stills that the color never changed between 4, 5 and 6.
Even the shape barely changed which makes me wonder why the piece here which originates from 2011 sets was made so thick, which makes the progression to ROTJ Lukes standard male hairpiece really jarring.

Lego would be better if they would base all details on movie stills instead of random photographs of the props. Wedges helmet appears to have grey markings in the movies but are made dark green in recent sets because the prop is dark green. Hans Hoth coat is blue in the movie because all the scenes were tinted blue but Lego now settled on it being brown like the original prop. Veers is only sand blue in one specific badly lit photograph of the field gear costume, in the movie it is obviously a grey to army green color, practically identical to the officers tunic, so why does Lego insist on that strange color scheme in all appearances?

By in United States,

If I pay that price for a game, I'd expect this figure (but I haven't found either available, so I won't buy it I guess).

The figure looks decent enough for a gimimck/one off. But do I really need to seek him out, not necessarily.

I do like they used a double sided head though.

And as Capn points out, the milk carton is not very different from the standard one which is readily available. It’s in 71032-2 for example.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Anonym:
Kenner’s Tatooine Luke and Bespin Luke had yellow hair and lightsabers. Jedi Luke had dark tan hair and either a blue or green lightsaber (my brother and I got both versions of the latter between us). And of course you couldn’t see his hair on X-Wing or Hoth Luke.

As for hairstyle, I remember he has a shaggy center part in Ep4, and a side part like the standard male minifig hair in Ep6. I can’t picture what it looks like in Ep5.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't think anyone has yet pointed out that "blue milk Luke" first appeared in the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special on Disney+... closer to when the original release of the game was scheduled!

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

I knew the carton was blue, hadn’t realised that the milk itself was actually blue also. Wow.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Maybe it's worth pointing out that this 6 piece minifigure polybag actually contains an instruction page because, I don't know, TLG thinks the average SW fan is really dumb?! Or it was done by the same smart guy who wanted this exclusive minifigure to be included in a limited edition, console only, deluxe version of the game and sold out within a day, instead of just making it a May the 4th promo.

@Wellspring said:

I don't think it's LEGO's game. As far as I know, they're just one of the licensors, along with Disney/Lucasfilm. I believe the actual publisher is Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've said this before - LEGO should just sell this or make it a VIP gift or anything to interfere with the aftermarket. It's one thing to have a high price on sets which have gone out of production or convention-only specials or employee gifts, but this is just artificial scarcity of a brand new product.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The other day, I saw a picture online where someone had put that Luke figure with the smirky face next to Aayla Secura's figure (SW0833). Obviously, I can't find that picture anymore...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@bgruner said:
"...but this is just artificial scarcity of a brand new product."

It's actual scarcity, based on an agreement with the video game developer to include an exclusive figure. The game was available for pre-order for over a year so while it may be hard to find now there was ample time to lock in a presale. Don't want the game? Ok that's fair....but how is it any different than the minifigs included in the various DK published books?

It’s quite likely there’s an exclusive deal with the game publisher which precludes LEGO from selling the figure separately.

My copy of TSS came with Poe's X-Wing. Not the 2019 one though, the 2016 polybag. Guess they had a ton of leftover stock. Kinda wish I had this fig.

Also the correct way to play through the game is the same way you would watch the movies, 4,5,6 - 1,2,3 - 7,8,9 ;)

Where do you think the name came from? In Ep4, Beru is shown pouring a chalky blue liquid out of a milky-white Tupperware container (which was a cultural thing, at the time, at least in the US) as they get ready to sit down for the evening meal after buying the droids from the Jawas. There’s no visible milk carton in the movie. Being farmers, that might not even be store-bought milk.

@BulbaNerd4000:
So, 1,2,3,4,5,6 and stop?

For me it's: 3,Rouge One,4,5,6,7,9 (Skip the 2008 Clone Wars film, Solo, number 8 and I'm also skipping 1 and 2 because Jar-Jar is in both and the bad dialogue in 2, (I.E. I hate sand, it's irritating and gets everywhere)

30625 is going for as low as US $30 (obo) and free shipping on eBay right now. If you really want it, bite the bullet and pay because it’s ranging all the way up to $500 and you know once the lower-priced deals are gone, they’re gone.

Just look at most of the SDCC Super Hero minifigs - they’re completely out of the reach of all but the craziest or most well-heeled (or both) collectors, which really stinks because there are quite a few I’d love to add to a display one day. Black Suit Spider-Man on the Daily Bugle? Yep!

I got 2x 2011 Batman and 1x Green Lantern for $50 each. I think they had been sold as low as $30 at the time. It wasn’t until the 2012 SDCC lineup was announced, with the clarification that they wouldn’t appear in retail sets, that those two shot up to $300 overnight. Keep in mind that, after their SDCC debut, they made a second appearance at NYCC, where they were joined by Superman, who ended up being released in
6862, so until that announcement was made, we had every reason to expect sets based on the Dark Knight and Green Lantern movies would eventually show up.

Imagine a galaxy far, far away where this was the polybag we looking for and 2x points on ALL SW Lego. Wow. Is that so hard? C'mon Lego, be better!

I'm holding out that Lego will subsequently release more of these or they will crash in value like Finn in dirty stormtrooper suit.

However, that may never happen for obvious reasons. If that's the case, I'm ok with not getting everything SW Lego anymore. Lego has burnt me out. I'm tired of jumping through their hoops.

Although I find this strangely appealing, mainly due to the carton itself I think, I just can't envisage splashing out £40+ on it. I recognise that the small boy in me would go ahead and buy it if I really wanted to so I can only summise, that on some level or other, I am really not that bothered. It may well be the jokiness that puts me off but the collector in me (I have 19 different Lukes already) just does not feel compelled. Going to suck it up and give it a miss. For now.

True enough. The only reason Boba from 10123 is worth almost $2000 is merely two arms an legs. For Luke (almost $500), in the same set, it's merely the printed hips!
