Review: 75305 Scout Trooper Helmet

Imperial personnel feature various recognisable helmets, matching their different specialisations and locations. They include the popular Imperial Scout Troopers, whose splendid helmets feature distinctive macrobinocular visors with enhanced communication equipment.

75305 Scout Trooper Helmet faithfully recreates those important design features and exhibits an impressive standard of detail, closely resembling the helmet introduced during Return of the Jedi. Moreover, I appreciate the relatively low cost of this model, within the Helmet Collection.

The Completed Model

Scout trooper helmets are distinctive within the Imperial army, featuring fewer dramatic curves than Stormtroopers or other personnel. That design certainly appears suitable for LEGO which is inherently angular and this model looks brilliant. The prominent visor shroud seems accurate when compared with the movie and I think the scale of this helmet is perfect, measuring nearly 19cm in height on the display base.

Detaching several external panels reveals the structure inside. The combination of bricks with studs on the side corresponds with other Helmet Collection models but the integration of large angled panels is unusual. The section underneath the 2x2 medium blue brick, shown below, is particularly enjoyable as those bricks are actually attached to the underside of the parts above, rather than to the side of the structural core.

Each helmet is displayed on an attractive plinth, consisting of black parts that contrast against the white helmet. The stand is reasonably simple but looks good and I appreciate the absolute consistency throughout this series. The printed plaque mounted on the front definitely matches other sets and appears suitably understated, in my opinion.

The characteristic visor design is slightly more angular than its onscreen counterpart, which narrows gradually towards the base. Nevertheless, I think this design looks superb because replicating this subtle curvature would have been impossible without introducing new pieces. The black lens at the centre also looks marvellous and that shape is perfect!

Several stickers are applied across this model, beginning on the front with small vents above and below the visor. These correspond with the source material and demonstrate remarkable attention to detail. Additionally, I love the light bluish grey filtration and communication system across the front, including the black air supply nozzle and curvature around the 'nose'.

While this helmet is predominantly white, light bluish grey and black accents continue around every side. These include pronounced auditory sensors which appear accurate. However, the transition between sharp angles and the curvature across the crown could perhaps have been softened, although this brick-built style matches 75276 Stormtrooper Helmet.

The stark contrast between studded and smooth surfaces that becomes apparent across the reverse also appears consistent with 75276 Stormtrooper Helmet. In addition, the dark bluish grey filters closely resemble those on the Stormtrooper. The neighbouring rows of dark bluish grey and white vents appear unique though, matching the onscreen helmet design.

These vents are formed using twelve separate stickers and another sticker is situated on the side, displaying an accurate marking. Biker Scout helmets include interesting seams on each side too, revealing the opening faceplate which appears prominently during Star Wars Rebels. Unfortunately, the faceplate cannot open here, although the designer did include an authentic seam.

Overall

Recreating the complex curvature and shaping associated with helmets is inherently difficult, particularly when using angular LEGO pieces. Fortunately, the famous Scout Trooper helmet includes relatively few rounded shapes, hence 75305 Scout Trooper Helmet compares rather favourably with the source material. The filtration system and lens seem particularly attractive.

The price of £44.99 or $49.99 also represents reasonable value, reflecting the comparatively modest size of this model beside others from the collection. However, their scale seems fairly consistent and the whole Helmet Collection appears accordingly excellent together, especially given the thematic connection between these five characters. Nevertheless, I anticipate much broader variety as the collection continues to grow!

It can be pre-ordered from LEGO.com now and will ship at the end of April.

By in Puerto Rico,

This needs a Kashyyyk MOD.

A clone trooper helmet should be the next. Named ones would be even better like Rex or Cody

By in Australia,

You are lucky on the price being lower, in Australia both this and Darth Vadar are the same price at $90 and the Probe Droid is $120 :(

By in United Kingdom,

Wasn’t too bothered about the TIE Pilot or the Stormtrooper, but this will look good with Vader and Fett to make a villainy display. Too many sets I want in Star Wars at the moment though, what with both these helmets, the Mando set and the X-wing, not to mention the rumoured summer sets

By in United States,

Glad they went with an Imperial one and not Ezra Bridger's, because then they would have had to build it with the visor permanently flipped up!

Very strange. In Canada this one is $70, the probe droid is $80 and Vader is $100.

Vader plus taxes will cost $115, which is $92 USD. That’s way too expensive.

I really need to see one of these in person to see if I like them or not. To me, this seems to be the best helmet of the bunch and I think I'd like to grab it. Thanks for the review!

Just when I’d finished talking myself out of wanting the helmet collection I get sucked back into wanting them all. Oh well guess I know what I’ll be getting in May.

ooh! I really wish to see someone mod this into Ezra's helmet one day!

If you don't look too closely, the studs on the helmets make them look fluffy.

By in Brazil,

The whole collection looks awesome together.

The helmet looks one of the best, mainly due to being more angular than the others as it was said. The series has a lot of potential given the amount of helmets in the whole saga.

I really like the scout trooper, Vader is ok.
I was really hoping for a helmet with more color tho.

After Boba Fett, my next two top picks would be this and Jango Fett (in a pinch, I could possibly just build a recolor of Boba’s). Seeing it, though...I find myself really wanting a matching Scout Trooper gun. And I wouldn’t complain about the rest of the Scout Trooper and a Speederbike to go with them...

Now wait a moment, you haven't reviewed 75304 : Darth Vader Helmet yet, have you?

By in Belgium,

Nice helmet, I think it'll look nice next to the others. It's just a shame there are so many stickers, but we kind of got used to that, even in 18+ sets…

Unfortunately I won't be buying it on day one, even if there's an enticing GWP, because it's needlessly 10 euros more expensive in Belgium (60) than in Germany (€50), while the Probe Droid and Vader each cost €70 in Belgium and Germany.

To all those who have issues with the illogical pricing strategies in their countries, I suggest to write to Customer Service to enquire about such inconsistencies. Although they'll reply that they can't do much about that since marketing people decide on such things, your compaints will be transferred to them, and the more complaints they get, the more likely things will change!

@MrClassic:
That doesn't mean they haven't built and photographed it for the review, though.

By in Netherlands,

Seeing all helmets together, it looks like Lego drew inspiration from minifig helmets and enlarging those, rather than trying to replicate their onscreen counterparts.

Viewing the helmets in this light gives it a whole new level of charm.

@Smullie_1138:
I was thinking that might be the case for the Batcowl, but when I pulled it up to confirm my suspicion, it was clearly shaped more like a human head.
