Review: 75008 TIE Bomber and Asteroid Field

Posted by ,

75008 Tie Bomber and Asteroid FieldThis is the last of my quick reviews of the Series 3 Star Wars Planet sets.

75008 TIE Bomber and Asteroid Field is a little different from all the other Planet sets in that an asteroid field isn't really a planet, is it?

Nevertheless it is one of the better looking 'planets' to be featured in these sets.

Box and packaging

Nothing remarkable about the box or packaging, they are the same as for every other Planet.

The minifig

The minifig is a TIE bomber pilot and is, according to BrickLink, new and has been assigned the designation sw457. The helmet design is not new (having been used for the TIE defender pilot a few years ago) but it does have a new print, which is superb. The torso print is new, too.

The ship

The TIE bomber is very well executed, although the wings are perhaps a little thicker than would be ideal.

The front cockpit features a very nice printed 2 x 2 clear dish, while at the back, two of the new conical droid heads have been used, so it's great to have them available in a useful, non-printed colour.

The completed model

As usual, a stand is provided for displaying the minifig and ship, and features a unique printed 4 x 4 tile.

Conclusion

This is another fine addition to the Planets series. The minifig is superb, the ship interesting and made with some great parts, and the bauble has an attractive print, even if it's not strictly speaking a planet. Another one to add to your collection then...

By in United Kingdom,

Wave one of 2013 so far looks pretty good planet wise with three great sets. I hope wave 2 will be just as good (seeing how disappointing the B-wing seems).

Review of the review:
Excellent summary of the noteworthy features of the set and its component pieces, complemented by beautifully composed photos. 10/10 :)

Thanks Huw!

Definitely the best one from Series 3. Great-looking ship, fun build, very nice minifigure. Not much of a planet, but I don't mind it.

The "planet" looks better than I thought it would, and the model is good as well.

I'm not keen on this series but this one's a winner.

Huw, in future Planet Series reviews, would it be possible to show a closer, more in-focus picture showing just the 'planet' itself? It's alright for this one, but on the Coruscant one, we didn't really get a good look of the print. And you don't make any substantial observations on them either, which is another thing I'd like to see in these reviews - the planet is part of the set (even if only two pieces) too, so could you comment on it too? :)

I am sure there are a few people out there (myself included) who are interested in the planet themselves, rather than just the ship and figure. I hang the planets on my ceiling you see, in between most of my small to medium-scale Star Wars ships, so I literally have the "buildable galaxy" that LEGO advertises for these planet sets.

Just a suggestion, thanks! ;)

In terms of this set, the planet turned out looking better than it was thought it was going to look. I always loved the build of the ship, and these close-ups confirm that. The minifig, which is *almost* a repeat, is a bit disappointing, but I do not think LEGO had much of a choice given the location and ship they chose. At least they were nice enough to give us a slightly different pilot, so that sort of makes up for it!

Thanks for the review :D

^ Good point, will do. I consider the planet a 'throwaway' and not really useful or interesting, to be honest!
